Fix a slow X-Plane 12 demo download or installation on Mac by checking the installer stage, network, storage, permissions and drive speed.
The X-Plane 12 demo can seem stuck on a Mac because the first download only supplies the installer; the installer then fetches, verifies and writes the simulator’s files. Slow Wi-Fi, sleeping, limited free space, a slow external drive, security filtering or a non-writable destination can stretch that process or stop it.
Which part of the X-Plane 12 demo installation is slow?
First establish whether the browser download, the installer’s file transfer or the final disk-writing stage is causing the delay. These stages can look similar but require different fixes.

How do I fix a stalled X-Plane 12 demo download?
- Confirm that it is genuinely stalled. A changing file name, downloaded total or disk-activity reading means work is continuing, even if the main progress bar appears stationary. Use Activity Monitor to check whether the installer is transferring data or writing to disk.
- Keep the Mac awake and connected to power. Sleep can interrupt or pause a long transfer. Use Ethernet where practical, or move closer to the Wi-Fi access point and stop other large downloads on the same connection.
- Check free storage. Leave space beyond the installer’s displayed requirement because downloading, extracting and verifying files may need temporary working room. Emptying the Bin may also release space that macOS has not made available.
- Choose a local, writable folder. Install into a folder owned by your macOS account. Avoid network locations, cloud-synchronised folders and read-only destinations. A slow external hard drive can make the copying and verification stages much longer than an internal SSD.
- Test without network filtering. A VPN, proxy, third-party web shield or restrictive network can interrupt individual files. Temporarily pause the relevant third-party filter, retry the installer and restore the protection afterwards; do not bypass macOS security with Terminal commands.
- Restart the installer using the same destination. The installer can normally inspect files already present and continue or replace incomplete data. Do not delete, rename or move the partial X-Plane folder before trying this.
- Download a fresh installer if the archive will not open. Replace the small installer package only when macOS reports that it is damaged, extraction repeatedly fails or the installer itself closes before displaying its download progress.

How can I tell when the installer has actually frozen?
Treat the installation as stalled when its status remains unchanged and Activity Monitor shows no meaningful network or disk activity for roughly 10–15 minutes while the Mac is awake. If data is still moving, let it continue; verification and thousands of small file operations do not always advance the visible bar smoothly.
If repeated attempts stop on different files, suspect the connection or network filtering. If they always stop while writing to the same destination, test a writable folder on the internal drive and check available space. A transfer that works later without any local change may simply have encountered temporary server or internet congestion.
Will restarting the X-Plane installer lose the download?
Restarting normally does not require every completed file to be downloaded again, provided you select the same X-Plane destination folder. The installer checks what is already there, so preserving the partial installation is usually faster than starting with an empty folder.
Force-quitting during an active file write is still best avoided. Quit normally where possible, reopen the installer and allow its file check to complete before deciding that the restart has also stalled.
