Download and install HD Mesh Scenery v4 in X-Plane 12, set scenery_packs.ini priority, verify coverage and fix common mesh conflicts.
To install HD Mesh Scenery v4 in X-Plane 12, download the required regional archives, extract every part, and place the resulting package folder in Custom Scenery. Start and close X-Plane once, then keep its entry below airports and overlays in scenery_packs.ini, with any preferred orthophoto base mesh above it.
Is HD Mesh Scenery v4 compatible with X-Plane 12?
HD Mesh Scenery v4 can be loaded by X-Plane 12 as custom base-mesh scenery, but it was developed for X-Plane 11 rather than rebuilt specifically for X-Plane 12.
Compatibility means the simulator can use the package; it does not make the underlying terrain data or definitions native to X-Plane 12. Coastlines, water boundaries, vegetation, land-class and seasonal appearance may differ from X-Plane 12 Global Scenery. HD Mesh can still be preferable in particular regions, but it is not an automatic improvement everywhere.
Install it only in Custom Scenery. Do not overwrite the simulator’s Global Scenery, Resources or default scenery folders.
Which HD Mesh v4 files should I download?
Download only the regional archives covering the areas in which you fly. Our regional HD Mesh v4 archives and X-Plane 12 compatibility notes identify the available coverage and package-specific requirements.
- Download every part when a region is split into a multi-part archive.
- Keep all parts in the same temporary folder and do not rename the numbered files.
- Allow storage for both the compressed downloads and the substantially larger extracted package.
- Keep the archives until X-Plane has loaded the installed scenery without errors.
Where is the HD Mesh v4 mod link?
The regional archive listing above is the HD Mesh v4 mod link. Searches such as daj link or daj link do moda simply mean “give me the mod link”; they do not refer to another edition or installation method. There is no separate native X-Plane 12 build of HD Mesh v4.
What if a download screen says “ready for step 2”?
“Ready for step 2” is not an X-Plane message and does not mean the scenery has been installed. For HD Mesh, the next step after downloading is to extract the complete archive. The package is installed as scenery data and does not require an executable installer.
How do I install HD Mesh Scenery in X-Plane 12?
Extract the complete regional package and copy its actual scenery root into the simulator’s Custom Scenery folder.
- Close X-Plane 12. Editing scenery folders or
scenery_packs.iniwhile the simulator is running can result in changes being overwritten when it closes. - Collect every archive part. Put all parts for the region in one temporary folder before starting extraction.
- Extract from the first part. With a split archive, open the first or main part only; the extraction utility should read the remaining parts automatically. Do not extract each numbered part separately.
- Find the real package root. The folder to install should contain
Earth nav datadirectly inside it. If that folder is buried inside another wrapper folder, move the inner package rather than the wrapper. - Copy the package into Custom Scenery. With the usual name, the result resembles
X-Plane 12/Custom Scenery/zzz_hd_global_scenery4/Earth nav data. Do not place the compressed archive itself there. - Merge additional regions carefully. Regional archives may extract into the same
zzz_hd_global_scenery4package. Merge their contents without replacing the entire destination folder, which could erase regions installed earlier. - Start and close X-Plane once. The simulator should detect the package and add it to
Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini. - Check the priority. Open
scenery_packs.iniwith X-Plane closed and move the HD Mesh entry below airports, overlays and any orthophoto mesh that should take precedence.
A nested package folder is the most common installation mistake we see. The simulator needs to find Earth nav data immediately inside the installed scenery package, not two or three folders down.
Can I install HD Mesh on another drive?
Yes. The package can reside on another drive if a filesystem link or junction inside Custom Scenery points to it; an ordinary desktop shortcut is not equivalent. Our instructions for keeping X-Plane 12 HD Mesh on another drive cover the folder arrangement and link methods.
Where should HD Mesh go in scenery_packs.ini?
HD Mesh should normally sit near the bottom of scenery_packs.ini, below airports and overlays and below any orthophoto base mesh whose photographic ground textures you want to see.
X-Plane reads the file from top to bottom. For a given terrain tile, the first suitable base mesh wins; X-Plane does not combine the elevation mesh from HD Mesh with imagery from a different orthophoto mesh.
A practical top-to-bottom order is:
- Custom airports and global airport scenery
- Object, road, forest and other overlay packages
- Orthophoto base-mesh tiles that should be displayed
- HD Mesh Scenery v4
- Any lower-priority custom base meshes
The HD Mesh line usually resembles SCENERY_PACK Custom Scenery/zzz_hd_global_scenery4/. Make sure it has not been changed to SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED.
Do not rely on the zzz folder prefix. Once scenery_packs.ini exists, the order of its entries controls priority, not alphabetical folder names. For more complex installations, use our ordering guidance for X-Plane 12 overlays and mesh packages.
How can I tell whether HD Mesh is working?
Check Log.txt after loading a flight inside an installed region, because visual differences alone do not reliably prove which base mesh X-Plane selected.
The log is in the main X-Plane folder and is replaced during each simulator session. Search it for the HD Mesh folder name and for scenery-loading lines associated with the tile you visited. Seeing the package during the initial scenery scan proves it was recognised; a later tile-loading reference is stronger evidence that it won the priority check for that location.
| Symptom | Likely cause and fix |
|---|---|
HD Mesh is absent from scenery_packs.ini and Log.txt | The package is probably nested too deeply or was not extracted. Confirm that Earth nav data is directly inside the installed folder. |
| X-Plane reports a loading error | One or more archive parts may be missing, incomplete or extracted separately. Download every part again if necessary and extract from the first part. |
| The package is recognised but the terrain appears unchanged | You may be outside its coverage, or another base mesh may be above it. Check the loaded location and the order in scenery_packs.ini. |
| Orthophoto imagery disappears | HD Mesh is above the orthophoto package and is winning the tile. Move the preferred orthophoto base mesh above HD Mesh. |
| Buildings, forests or roads disappear over orthophotos | The orthophoto mesh may be active without a suitable overlay. Keep the required overlay above both base-mesh packages rather than moving HD Mesh above the orthophoto tile. |
| Only some installed regions work | A regional archive may have been omitted or erased while merging another region. Inspect the package’s regional folders and extract the missing archive again. |
Does HD Mesh replace X-Plane 12 Global Scenery or Ortho4XP?
HD Mesh does not permanently replace X-Plane 12 Global Scenery, but it can override it tile by tile wherever the custom package has coverage and sufficient priority.
| Scenery type | What it supplies | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| X-Plane 12 Global Scenery | The simulator’s native worldwide terrain and fallback coverage | You want the simplest installation, X-Plane 12-native data and dependable coverage outside add-on regions |
| HD Mesh Scenery v4 | An alternative regional base mesh with its own terrain and land-class data | You prefer its results in a covered region and accept the storage and loading overhead of an older dataset |
| Ortho4XP or other orthophoto scenery | Photographic ground imagery packaged with its own base mesh | Aerial imagery should take priority over land-class ground textures |
Keep Global Scenery installed as the fallback. Removing or disabling HD Mesh will then return affected tiles to the next eligible mesh without requiring default scenery to be restored.
Ortho4XP and HD Mesh can remain installed together, but they cannot contribute separate parts of the same base-mesh tile. Placing an orthophoto tile above HD Mesh displays the orthophoto package’s imagery and mesh; HD Mesh does not improve the elevation underneath it. See our explanation of how Ortho4XP and HD Mesh interact before changing priorities or deleting either package.
