X-Plane 12 has no native DLSS switch. Learn what RTX owners can use instead, how to set rendering resolution and which options recover FPS.
No. X-Plane 12 does not include native NVIDIA DLSS, so there is no DLSS switch to enable, even when the PC has a GeForce RTX graphics card. The closest built-in alternative is to lower Rendering Resolution and use X-Plane’s FSR upscaling, then tune anti-aliasing and other graphics settings around the result.
What should I use instead of DLSS in X-Plane 12?
The closest built-in substitute is the Rendering Resolution control in X-Plane 12’s graphics settings. Moving it below the native position renders the 3D scene at a lower internal resolution and uses FidelityFX Super Resolution to upscale it.
FSR is not restricted to AMD cards. An NVIDIA GPU can use X-Plane’s implementation, but it remains FSR rather than DLSS: it does not activate the RTX card’s DLSS features or produce identical image quality.

How do I configure X-Plane’s FSR upscaling?
- Keep the display output at its native resolution. Lower only the
Rendering Resolutioncontrol so that two separate scaling operations do not compound the blur. - Start at native rendering resolution. Note the frame rate and image quality in a demanding, repeatable situation such as a large airport with clouds and a glass-cockpit aircraft.
- Lower rendering resolution gradually. Check small cockpit lettering, runway markings, thin aircraft edges and distant scenery after each change.
- Compare performance in the same scene. A worthwhile FPS increase means the GPU was constrained by rendering resolution. Little or no change usually points to a CPU bottleneck or frame-rate cap.
- Balance anti-aliasing afterwards. Heavy anti-aliasing combined with aggressive upscaling can waste performance without restoring all lost detail.

Why is there no DLSS option on my RTX card?
An RTX card cannot expose DLSS in a simulator that has not integrated it. DLSS needs support inside the rendering engine; using Vulkan on Windows or Linux is not sufficient, and X-Plane’s Metal renderer on macOS has no DLSS path either.
This also means X-Plane 12 has no native DLSS Frame Generation setting. A common mistake is to assume that installing a newer NVIDIA driver will make a DLSS menu appear, but drivers cannot supply the missing simulator-side integration.
Can NVIDIA settings or a mod force DLSS?
No NVIDIA Control Panel setting can turn driver-level image scaling into DLSS. NVIDIA Image Scaling and similar external scaling methods work on the completed image and lack the simulator’s motion and scene data, so they are separate technologies.
Likewise, copying DLSS files from another game does not add support. Unofficial injectors may interfere with the Vulkan presentation path, menus, VR or simulator updates, and they should not be mistaken for native X-Plane 12 DLSS.
Why does lowering rendering resolution not improve FPS?
Lowering rendering resolution helps primarily when X-Plane is GPU-limited. Use the result itself as the diagnostic:
- FPS rises noticeably: keep a moderate FSR setting and choose the sharpest level that meets your performance target.
- FPS barely changes: restore some resolution because the CPU, aircraft systems, plugins, AI traffic or world-object processing is probably the limit.
- FPS stays fixed at an exact value: check vertical synchronisation, headset refresh behaviour or an external frame-rate cap.
- Stutters remain despite a higher average FPS: texture resolution, VRAM pressure, scenery loading or plugins may be the real problem.
