Does X-Plane 12 support historical weather?

X-Plane 12 does not include a built-in archive that automatically loads weather for a past date. Its Real Weather mode uses current data. To fly historical conditions, set the simulator date and time separately, then recreate archived observations manually or use an X-Plane 12-compatible weather engine with historical replay.

What historical weather does X-Plane 12 support?

X-Plane 12 supports manually configured weather, but its built-in Real Weather system does not retrieve conditions from a historical date. Real Weather downloads the latest available data regardless of the simulator's calendar setting.

If you want present-day conditions, use the normal process for configuring X-Plane 12 Real Weather. For a past flight, disable Real Weather so that a new download cannot replace your manually entered conditions.

How do I recreate historical weather manually?

The most dependable built-in method is to obtain archived observations and reproduce their values with X-Plane 12's manual weather controls.

  1. Choose the exact time in UTC. Historical METAR reports use Zulu time. Confirm the date as well as the hour, because the coded report itself may show only the day and time within its archived context.
  2. Collect suitable observations. Start with a METAR from the departure or destination airport closest to the chosen time. For an en-route recreation, collect reports from several stations plus upper-air information where available.
  3. Set X-Plane's date and time. This gives you the appropriate daylight and clock time, but it does not select the weather.
  4. Select manual or customised weather. In the weather controls, switch away from Real Weather before entering the historical conditions.
  5. Copy the reported values. Set wind direction, speed and gusts, visibility, cloud layers, temperature, pressure and precipitation using the nearest equivalents available in the weather panel.
  6. Add unreported details cautiously. A METAR does not fully describe turbulence, cloud tops, winds aloft or weather between stations. Use other historical records where available rather than guessing extreme conditions.

Can changing the X-Plane date load old weather?

No. Changing the date or clock does not make X-Plane's weather server request data from that period. This can produce a misleading combination of historical lighting and present-day weather; our explanation of how simulator time interacts with Real Weather covers that behaviour in more detail.

Do not assume that copying an old METAR text file into an X-Plane folder will create a complete historical environment. X-Plane 12 weather includes more than one surface observation, and internal file formats or locations can change. Use manual controls or a tool explicitly documented for your X-Plane version.

When is a third-party weather engine better?

An archive-capable weather engine is the better choice when conditions must change across a route or evolve through several hours.

Before choosing an add-on, confirm that it explicitly supports X-Plane 12, your operating system, the required date range and historical winds aloft. Avoid running an external injector alongside built-in Real Weather unless the add-on's instructions specifically require it. Two active weather sources can overwrite each other or cause abrupt changes.

Why will an old METAR not reproduce the entire flight?

A METAR is a surface observation for one station and one moment, not a three-dimensional record of the atmosphere. It may omit cloud tops, upper winds, localised showers, runway contamination and the strength of turbulence away from the airport.

The mistakes we see most often are mixing local time with UTC, reversing the wind direction, entering pressure in the wrong unit and treating an AGL cloud base as MSL.
