Should I buy X-Plane 12 on Steam or direct?
For most simmers, we recommend buying X-Plane 12 directly from Laminar Research because it avoids dependence on the Steam client and gives you simpler control over installation and updates. Choose Steam instead if you value its library, payment options, play-time tracking and refund process. The simulator and add-on compatibility are otherwise essentially the same.
X-Plane 12 Steam vs direct: what actually changes?
The aircraft, flight model, graphics and scenery format do not change; the purchase channel mainly affects licensing, installation, launching, repairs and updates. Both editions receive the same public simulator builds, although their delivery mechanisms and release timing can occasionally differ.

Neither edition produces better frame rates, visuals or flight dynamics. Those depend on the X-Plane build, graphics settings, hardware, scenery and plugins—not the shop that supplied the licence.

Which X-Plane 12 version should I choose?
Buy direct if you want maximum control over your installation; buy on Steam if its account, payment and library features are more useful to you.
- Choose direct if you do not want Steam running, prefer to decide exactly when updates are installed, or want the transaction handled by the simulator's developer.
- Choose Steam if you keep your games in one library, use Steam's regional checkout or payment facilities, want its play-time tracking, or place particular value on its refund process.
- Choose direct for plugin-sensitive setups if preserving a known-good simulator build is a priority. Steam's update controls are less convenient when you need to postpone an update until aircraft and plugins have been checked.
Public betas deserve caution on either channel. They may change systems used by aircraft, scenery or plugins, so do not opt into one on your main installation merely to obtain a newer build number.
Do X-Plane 12 add-ons work with both versions?
Yes. Aircraft, scenery, liveries and plugins normally work identically in the Steam and direct editions because both use the same X-Plane folder structure.
The difference is the location of the simulator's root folder. A direct copy sits wherever you installed it, while the Steam copy is normally under a Steam library in steamapps/common/X-Plane 12. Aircraft go under Aircraft, scenery under Custom Scenery, and plugins commonly under Resources/plugins.

Buying through Steam does not make an X-Plane 11-only add-on compatible with X-Plane 12. Compatibility is determined by the add-on and simulator version, not the licence store.
Can I switch between Steam and direct later?
Treat the Steam licence and Laminar Research product key as separate purchases because there is no general licence conversion between them. Adding a direct copy to Steam as a non-Steam game creates only a shortcut; it does not turn it into a Steam-owned copy.
If you later buy the other edition, you can move compatible aircraft, liveries and scenery after backing them up. Avoid copying the entire simulator over the new installation, and check paid add-on activation limits before moving plugins or aircraft that use their own licensing systems.
Can either edition run without an internet connection?
Both can be used for offline flying after installation and authorisation, but neither purchase route should be treated as a permanently offline licence. The direct digital edition needs network access for product-key authorisation, while Steam requires the installation and account to be authenticated before its offline mode can be used.
Live weather, downloads, online networks and other connected services still require internet access regardless of where X-Plane 12 was purchased.
What should I check before buying?
Test performance, confirm the installation method you prefer and read the applicable licence and refund terms before paying.
- Run the demo. The downloadable X-Plane 12 demo for Windows, macOS and Linux lets you assess controls, graphics and performance before choosing a store.
- Plan your storage. Both editions need broadly the same space for equivalent scenery coverage; Steam does not reduce the simulator's storage requirements.
- Choose your update policy. Direct is the safer default if you routinely delay simulator updates until critical add-ons are confirmed compatible.
- Check refund conditions. Terms can differ by seller, payment method and region, particularly after a key has been activated or substantial use has been recorded.
If you have no strong attachment to Steam, the direct Laminar Research edition is our preferred choice. It provides the same X-Plane 12 experience with fewer storefront dependencies and more straightforward update control.
