How much storage space does X-Plane 12 need on PC?
X-Plane 12 needs roughly 25 GB for a basic PC installation, but that figure does not include every scenery region or future add-ons. For a useful installation with substantial default scenery, reserve 80–100 GB on an SSD; orthophotos, custom airports and aircraft can push the total into hundreds of gigabytes.
How much X-Plane 12 disk space should I reserve?
For most PC users, allocating 100–150 GB is a sensible starting point. That gives X-Plane 12 room for a broad selection of default scenery, updates and several add-on aircraft or airports without immediately filling the drive.

These are planning allowances rather than fixed installation sizes. The X-Plane installer calculates the requirement from the scenery regions selected, so its displayed figure is the best guide for that particular installation. Why does X-Plane 12's storage size vary so much?
Scenery selection is the main reason two X-Plane 12 installations can differ by hundreds of gigabytes. The base simulator is relatively compact, while worldwide terrain and third-party scenery consume far more space.
- Default scenery: Each selected geographical region adds terrain, roads, buildings and airport data. Installing only the areas in which you fly saves considerable space.
- Custom scenery: Airports, regional overlays, object libraries and mesh packages normally live under
Custom Scenery. Our explanation of where X-Plane add-ons are installed helps identify which content is using the drive. - Orthophotos: Photographic tiles can consume tens or hundreds of gigabytes per region, depending on coverage and image resolution. Source downloads and generated tiles may also coexist temporarily during scenery creation.
- Streaming scenery caches: Tools that fetch scenery on demand still need local cache space. If using it, account for the cache location described in our AutoOrtho setup and usage guidance.
- Aircraft and leftovers: Detailed aircraft can be several gigabytes each. Extracted ZIP files, old versions and manual backups often consume as much space as the active add-on.
- Updates: Installers may need temporary working space while downloading, unpacking or replacing files. A drive with exactly the quoted installation capacity can therefore still run out of room.
Download size and installed size are not necessarily identical because packages may be compressed in transit. Disk capacity is also separate from system RAM and graphics-card VRAM.
Should X-Plane 12 be installed on an SSD?
Yes—an SSD is strongly preferable for X-Plane 12. It shortens loading times and helps the simulator retrieve scenery and aircraft assets more quickly. A hard drive can work, but it is a poor choice for a large scenery library.

The standalone edition can be placed in a simple, writable folder on another internal or external SSD. Avoid protected Windows system folders. For a Steam-managed copy, use Steam's library tools rather than dragging the installation folder manually. An external drive should remain connected with the same drive letter whenever X-Plane is used.
How do I check and reduce X-Plane 12's storage use?
Check the size of the complete X-Plane 12 folder, then inspect its largest subfolders. On Windows, File Explorer's folder properties will calculate the total.
- Measure the main folder. Right-click the
X-Plane 12folder, open its properties and allow Windows to finish calculating the size. - Inspect scenery and aircraft. Check
Global Scenery,Custom SceneryandAircraftfirst; these are usually the largest locations. - Include external caches. Orthophoto tools and streaming utilities may store data outside the simulator folder, so check their configured cache locations as well.
- Remove deliberate targets only. Delete obsolete add-on versions, installers, ZIP archives and scenery you recognise. Do not remove unfamiliar libraries or default files at random.
- Keep update headroom. Leave at least several tens of gigabytes beyond the expected installation size, especially when X-Plane shares the Windows system drive.
Default scenery regions can be added or removed later through the installer. For a typical installation, a 500 GB SSD leaves comfortable room for X-Plane 12 and a moderate add-on collection; choose 1 TB or more if photographic scenery is a major part of the plan.
