description=The CV-340 made its debut with United Air Lines in November 1952. It had little in common with the CV-240, having a much larger wing and a longer fuselage to lift more weight. Improved transonic characteristics allowed it to cruise higher despite its greater useful load, surface area and drag. The larger CV-340 was more profitable then the CV-240, but when also powered by R-2800-CB16 engines it needed longer runways due to its greater weight. Of the 311 built, 102 were military transports for the USAF and USN under the designations C-131B/D and R4Y-1.
