FSX Croda Rossa Photorealistic Scenery

Croda Rossa photoreal scenery brings Northern Italy’s Dolomite ridgelines into sharp focus with high-resolution aerial imagery and carefully matched terrain for realistic rock faces, colors, and slope definition in FSX. It runs standalone and also layers cleanly over ItalVFR Trentino for seamless two-meter regional coverage with extra local detail.

This photorealistic scenery enhancement captures the dramatic details of the Croda Rossa Mountain range and is designed by Frank and supported by Raimondo. It precisely replicates the topography using high-resolution images gathered by a local pilot, thereby granting virtual aviators an authentic depiction of this impressive Dolomite peak in Northern Italy. The package functions independently, but it also integrates seamlessly with ItalVFR’s freeware Trentino coverage for Microsoft Flight Simulator X, ensuring an even broader two-meter resolution photorealistic experience.

Elevated Coverage of the Alpine Region

Croda Rossa—often recognized for its remarkable geological formations—stands as one of the lesser-known but visually striking mountains in the Dolomite sector of Italy’s alpine chain. Frank’s depiction of these soaring ridges employs actual aerial photography, which brings forth vivid textures that mirror real-world conditions. Pilots exploring the region can anticipate crisp rock faces, accurate lighting effects, and richly rendered coloration that mirrors each slope’s natural character.

Augmenting the ItalVFR Two-Meter Base Packages

This add-on may be employed as a standalone package, but it was also tailored to complement the comprehensive ItalVFR series. ItalVFR aims to transform Italian regions into two-meter resolution terrain layers. Those who have already installed the Trentino portion of ItalVFR (or comparable areas, such as Liguria and Valle d’Aosta) can elevate the detail even further with Frank’s Alpine enhancements. By stacking this scenery above the ItalVFR base layers, you preserve the broad coverage while highlighting Croda Rossa’s sharper textures on top.

Placing the Files in Your Scenery Library

To initiate installation, create a dedicated folder (for instance, frank_addons) within your primary Microsoft Flight Simulator X directory. Once that folder is established, add a subfolder called scenery. Extract the included BGL content directly into:

  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\frank_addons\scenery

Next, launch Microsoft Flight Simulator X and insert frank_addons into your scenery library. Make sure the frank_addons entry is at a higher layer (numerically lower) than any ItalVFR base coverage. For instance, if the ItalVFR region is on layer 2, place frank_addons on layer 1. This positioning lets the simulator prioritize the more detailed mountain textures over the general coverage.

Real Imagery and Notable Development

Frank has contributed multiple high-resolution enhancements for the Italian Alps, including features such as Tofane. Each module integrates genuine photographic material acquired around these mountainous locations. By focusing on core terrain details, texture fidelity, and color representations, his sceneries replicate the grandeur of peaks like Croda Rossa with superior realism.

Produced by Frank. Special thanks to Raimondo for his continuous support and involvement.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D scenery
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place scenery in Addon Scenery

Create a folder under FSX\Addon Scenery\ containing scenery and texture sub-folders.
  3. Activate in Scenery Library

In FSX, go to Settings → Scenery Library → Add Area. Higher priority means it overrides lower entries for the same location.
  4. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
