I remember the first time I saw a train go by. My dad took me to the crossing one hot summer evening. I watched wide-eyed as the ground shook beneath my feet. We stood there as it rolled toward us, faster and faster, horn blasting. I could see the engineer in his cab. Gotta be the best seat in the world.
From that moment on, whenever I saw a train, I longed to be in that seat, my hands on the controls, driving a mechanical beast.
Years later, I take my son down to the same crossing. I see the joy on his face as those big, beautiful trains roll by. I know now that he wants to drive trains too. And you know what? Now we can, each and every day, as many times as we want, whenever we want.
