Find why your FSX monitor goes blank and fix full-screen resolution, refresh rate, fsx.cfg, graphics drivers and multi-monitor conflicts.
FSX usually makes a monitor go blank because exclusive full-screen mode requests a resolution or refresh rate the display or graphics driver cannot hold. Press Alt+Enter to return to windowed mode, then select the monitor’s native resolution. If that fails, reset FSX’s display configuration and test one monitor.
How do I restore the FSX picture immediately?
Pressing Alt+Enter while FSX has focus is the quickest way to escape a faulty full-screen display mode.
- Press
Alt+Enter. If FSX appears in a window, the simulator itself is running and its full-screen mode is the likely cause. - Open FSX’s display settings. Select the resolution native to the monitor and a refresh rate the display supports. The available choices come from the graphics driver.
- Test windowed mode first. Apply the new settings, restart FSX and only then try full screen again.
- Turn off Preview DirectX 10 temporarily. If that option is present, disable it and restart FSX. It can expose rendering or driver problems on some systems.

What does the type of blank screen tell me?
The point at which the screen goes blank usually identifies whether the fault is a display mode, renderer, add-on or crash.

If an outside view remains visible but only the virtual cockpit or instrument panel is black, the monitor is not losing its signal. That points instead to the selected view, aircraft textures, panel files or add-on gauges.
How do I reset FSX display settings?
Renaming fsx.cfg forces FSX and FSX: Steam Edition to build a clean configuration with newly detected display settings.
- Close FSX completely. Confirm that it is no longer running in Task Manager.
- Open the configuration location. Enter
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\in File Explorer’s address bar. - Find the active FSX folder. It may be named
FSXorFSX-SE. Steam Edition does not always use the latter; side-by-side installation history affects the folder chosen. Look for the recently modifiedfsx.cfg. - Rename the file. Change
fsx.cfgtofsx.cfg.oldrather than deleting it. - Start FSX. Let it detect the graphics hardware and create a fresh file, then test in windowed mode before changing other settings.
This resets simulator configuration and removes manual fsx.cfg tweaks, but it does not uninstall aircraft or scenery. If the blank screen remains, restore the old file so you do not lose useful settings unnecessarily.
Can multiple monitors make FSX go blank?
Yes. FSX can open on the wrong output or fail when monitors are connected through different graphics devices.
- Disconnect every secondary display and test FSX on the Windows primary monitor.
- Make sure the monitor used by FSX is connected to the dedicated graphics card, not a motherboard video socket while the simulator runs on another GPU.
- Once FSX works, reconnect displays one at a time and move undocked views only after the main flight view is stable.
- Keep full-screen testing on one display; windowed mode is generally easier to diagnose across mixed resolutions and refresh rates.

Driver, overlay and add-on checks
A clean FSX configuration that still produces a blank display points towards the graphics driver, background software or a rendering add-on.
- Restart Windows, then update or reinstall the appropriate graphics driver if other 3D programs also lose their picture.
- Temporarily disable the Steam overlay, recording tools, frame-rate displays and other programs that draw over FSX.
- Undo any shader injector, replacement DirectX library or visual modification you deliberately installed. Follow its removal instructions rather than deleting unknown files from the FSX directory.
- Test a default aircraft, airport, weather preset and daytime flight. Reintroduce aircraft, scenery and visual add-ons one group at a time.
If the FSX process stops or returns an application error when the monitor blanks, treat it as a crash and use our configuration and add-on crash checks. If the monitor also loses signal in other games or during ordinary Windows use, investigate the cable, monitor input, graphics card, power supply and temperatures; that is no longer an FSX-only problem.
