Install a DCS A6M Zero mod correctly: use the right Saved Games folder, verify entry.lua, and fix an aircraft that does not appear.
Yes. Unofficial community A6M Zero aircraft mods have been released for DCS World, although they are not supported like official DCS modules and compatibility depends on the mod release. Install the extracted package in the active Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft folder, with entry.lua directly inside the mod’s root folder.
Is the A6M Zero an official DCS module?
The downloadable A6M packages people usually mean are community aircraft mods rather than supported, full-fidelity DCS modules. A release may be flyable or AI-only, use simplified systems, or require another DCS aircraft module, so check its included documentation before installing it.
An A6M model appearing in the Mission Editor does not prove that it is flyable. If the aircraft cannot be assigned the Player or Client skill, it is either AI-only or its flyable component has failed to load. Our explanation of how community aircraft differ from official DCS modules covers the practical limitations in more detail.
How do I install an A6M Zero mod in DCS World?
DCS normally loads community aircraft from the Windows Saved Games profile rather than from the simulator’s core installation directory.
| Folder | When to use it |
|---|---|
Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft | Use this when DCS creates or updates the DCS profile. |
Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Mods\aircraft | Use this only if an older installation still writes its settings and logs to DCS.openbeta. |
Core DCS installation under Mods\aircraft | Avoid this for community aircraft unless the mod’s own instructions explicitly require it. |
- Check the release requirements. Read the supplied instructions for the supported DCS build, required modules and whether the aircraft is flyable. Use the original project archive rather than an unidentified repack.
- Close DCS and remove any older copy. Overwriting an old installation can leave obsolete scripts or textures behind.
- Extract the archive to a temporary folder. Do not place the compressed ZIP or RAR file directly in
Mods\aircraft. - Find the actual aircraft root. This is the folder containing
entry.lua, usually alongside other mod folders and files. - Copy that root folder into the active profile. The final structure should resemble
Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft\<A6M-mod-folder>\entry.lua. - Launch DCS and test it in the Mission Editor. Create a simple mission, turn off historical unit filtering if necessary, select a country supported by the package and look for its A6M variant. Assign Player or Client if the release is meant to be flyable.
The mistake we see constantly is an extra wrapper folder, producing Mods\aircraft\A6M\A6M\entry.lua. DCS needs the folder containing entry.lua at the first level beneath Mods\aircraft. See our full Saved Games mod-installation walkthrough for archive-nesting and profile details.
Why does the A6M Zero not appear in DCS?
A missing aircraft usually means DCS is reading a different profile, the archive is nested incorrectly or the mod is incompatible with the installed simulator build.
- Wrong Saved Games profile: Launch DCS, then check whether
DCS\Logs\dcs.logorDCS.openbeta\Logs\dcs.logreceived the newest timestamp. Install the mod under that same profile. - Extra directory level: Move the folder containing
entry.luadirectly beneathMods\aircraft. - Missing dependency: Install and authorise any DCS module named in the mod’s documentation. Do not assume every A6M package is standalone.
- Mission Editor filtering: Disable historical unit filtering and try a country or coalition supported by the mod.
- AI-only release: If the Zero appears but offers no Player or Client skill, confirm that the package was actually advertised as flyable.
- Conflicting copies: Remove older versions from both Saved Games and the core DCS directory before making a clean installation.
- Incomplete extraction: Re-extract the original archive if files are missing. If security software quarantined something, verify the package rather than blindly restoring the file.
A normal DCS repair does not repair community files under Saved Games. If DCS itself works after the A6M folder is removed, troubleshoot or replace the mod instead of repeatedly repairing the simulator.
Will the A6M Zero mod work online and after updates?
Multiplayer support depends on the server, mission and exact mod release. For a mission containing a flyable community A6M, expect the server and participating pilots to need matching versions; public servers may omit the aircraft or reject unsupported modifications through their integrity rules.
A DCS update can also break an aircraft mod even when its folder remains intact. Remove the A6M folder temporarily, confirm that unmodified DCS starts correctly, then install a release declared compatible with that build. Our compatibility checks to make after a DCS update explain how to isolate an outdated mod without disturbing the main installation.
