Install the flyable DCS C-130 Hercules mod in the correct Saved Games folder, avoid nested files, and fix common loading and multiplayer issues.
Yes. DCS World has a free, unofficial, flyable C-130J-30 Super Hercules community mod, often called the Hercules or Anubis C-130J mod. Install the module root under Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft (or the Saved Games branch DCS actually uses), then confirm that entry.lua is not buried inside an extra folder.
Which C-130 download is the flyable mod?
For a flyable Hercules, you need the complete C-130J-30 community aircraft package, not a C-130 livery or AI model. The well-known Anubis package includes its own cockpit and flight-model files and is not merely a Flaming Cliffs cockpit conversion.
A texture package labelled C-130 only changes the appearance of an existing aircraft. Likewise, an AI package may add a unit to the Mission Editor without providing a Player or Client cockpit.
The community mod is separate from any C-130 module distributed through DCS Module Manager. If a Hercules appears there as an account entitlement, install and update that version through DCS rather than copying it into Saved Games.
How do you install the C-130 Hercules mod?
Install the complete aircraft folder in the active DCS Saved Games branch, keeping the package's internal structure intact.
- Check the release. Obtain the complete archive from the developer's maintained release channel and confirm that it supports your DCS build. Do not combine files from different releases.
- Remove an older copy. Close DCS World and move the existing C-130 module folder outside Saved Games. Overwriting an old version can leave obsolete scripts and binaries behind.
- Extract the archive. Unpack it into a temporary folder first. If Windows offers an
Unblockoption in the archive's Properties window, apply it before extraction. - Find the module root. Locate the folder containing
entry.lua. An outer download folder or version-numbered wrapper is not necessarily the module root. - Copy it into Mods\aircraft. The resulting layout should resemble
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft\Hercules\entry.lua. Older or separate installations may instead useDCS.openbeta. Steam and standalone DCS both use the Saved Games location for user aircraft. - Verify the aircraft. Start DCS, open the Mission Editor and look for the Hercules under a supported country. Set its skill to
PlayerorClient, enter the mission, then configure the mod's own control category.
If both DCS and DCS.openbeta folders exist, launch and close the simulator, then check which folder has the newly updated Logs\dcs.log. That is the branch receiving the mod. Our folder-by-folder DCS mod installation checks cover other archive layouts and Saved Games problems.
Why does the C-130 not appear or load?
Most failed C-130 installations come from a nested module folder, the wrong Saved Games branch or an incompatible release.
| Symptom | Likely cause and fix |
|---|---|
| Hercules is absent from the Mission Editor | Check that entry.lua sits directly inside the module folder under Mods\aircraft. Also check the selected country and disable date-based historical filtering as a diagnostic. |
| Aircraft appears but cannot be selected as Player or Client | You may have installed a livery or AI-only package. Confirm that the archive is the complete flyable community aircraft, then create a fresh unit with the correct skill setting. |
| DCS stops loading after installation | Move the C-130 folder out of Saved Games and restart DCS. If that restores the simulator, install a clean, compatible mod release and search dcs.log for the module name and ERROR. |
| Textures, cockpit elements or scripts are missing | Delete the installed folder and extract a fresh copy. This commonly happens when an update is merged over an older version or the archive is only partly extracted. |
| The aircraft works offline but not on a server | The mission, server policy or installed mod versions do not match. Saved Games installation alone does not guarantee multiplayer or integrity-check acceptance. |
Some community aircraft use compiled plug-ins. If security software quarantines one, verify the archive's source and release rather than disabling protection for an unknown file.
If files were mistakenly copied into the core DCS installation, remove them and restore official DCS files with the repair tool. A repair does not remove a faulty mod from Saved Games, so isolate that folder separately.
Does the Hercules mod work after DCS updates and online?
The C-130 community mod may stop working when a DCS update changes aircraft, scripting or plug-in interfaces. Check the mod's supported build before troubleshooting controls or reinstalling DCS; we explain how to check community-mod compatibility after a DCS update.
For multiplayer, the mission must provide Hercules client slots, and pilots generally need the same mod release. The server's integrity policy can still reject custom files or omit unsupported aircraft.
If the aircraft flies but cargo, paratroop or airdrop functions do not work, treat those as release-specific mission features. Use the documentation and sample missions bundled with that exact version; mixing cargo scripts from an older build is a common cause of partial failures.
