How do I add AI traffic to Microsoft FS2004?

What is the easiest way to add AI traffic?

The simplest method is a complete installer-based package containing aircraft, liveries and schedules. A livery or AI aircraft model on its own will not create traffic; FS2004 also needs a compiled traffic file telling that aircraft where and when to fly.

How do I install a World of AI package in FS2004?

  1. Find the correct FS2004 folder. It is the directory containing fs9.exe. The location varies with the edition, Windows version and choices made during installation.
  2. Download the installer and an airline package. The collection of compatible airline traffic packages supplies the aircraft, liveries and schedules. Keep the package archive intact if the installer expects to read it directly.
  3. Close FS2004 and run the installer. Select Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 as the target. If automatic detection fails, browse to the folder containing fs9.exe. An installation under Program Files may require the utility to be run with administrator permission.
  4. Check where the files went. AI aircraft folders belong directly under Aircraft, while compiled traffic files commonly go in Scenery\World\scenery. Do not place FS2004 aircraft in SimObjects\Airplanes; that is an FSX-style location.
  5. Enable traffic in FS2004. Open the Traffic tab in the simulator's display settings and raise both airline and general-aviation density while testing. Restart the simulator after installing or changing traffic BGL files.
  6. Test at an appropriate airport and time. Use a hub served by the installed airline, set density to 100 per cent temporarily, and try more than one day or time. A successfully installed schedule does not guarantee that a flight is active at every moment.

Before allowing an installer to overwrite anything, copy any same-named aircraft folder or traffic BGL you want to preserve. This is especially useful when replacing an older package for the same airline.

How do I install AI traffic manually?

Manual installation requires three working parts: an FS2004-compatible aircraft, a flight plan referencing that aircraft, and a compiled traffic BGL in an active scenery folder.

  1. Install the AI aircraft. Place its complete folder under Aircraft. The folder should contain aircraft.cfg plus the required model, panel, sound and texture folders supplied with the package.
  2. Check the aircraft title. Each aircraft variation has a title= value inside a [fltsim.x] section. The corresponding entry in the traffic source files must reproduce that title exactly, including punctuation and spaces.
  3. Compile source flight plans when necessary. Traffic Tools uses aircraft, airport and flight-plan source lists to create a BGL understood by FS2004. If the download already includes a compiled traffic BGL, this step is unnecessary; copying the source text files into a scenery folder will not make them run.
  4. Install the resulting BGL. Scenery\World\scenery is the conventional location. Another scenery folder can work if it is active in FS2004's Scenery Library and contains a proper scenery subfolder.
  5. Restart and test. Begin with maximum traffic density, confirm that flights appear, and then reduce the sliders to a practical level.

Why does my FS2004 AI traffic not appear?

Missing AI traffic is usually caused by a disabled density setting, installation into the wrong FS2004 folder, a missing traffic BGL or an aircraft-title mismatch.

Does add-on AI traffic replace the default traffic?

Most AI packages add to FS2004's stock traffic rather than replacing it. This can produce duplicate airlines, excessive gate occupancy and unrealistic combinations of historical and newer liveries.

To disable a specific schedule safely, close FS2004 and rename its identified file from .bgl to .off. Keep the stock traffic file unless you deliberately want a complete replacement, and never remove an AI aircraft folder while active BGLs still reference it.

What AI traffic density should I use in FS2004?

Start around 30–50 per cent and increase the setting only if performance remains acceptable at large hubs. AI aircraft consume processor time on the ground and in flight, so a setting that works at a regional airport may cause stuttering at a major international hub.

The density value is a flight-plan filter, not a promise that an airport will be that percentage full. Individual plans carry activation thresholds, and flights still depend on their scheduled airport, day and time. Adjust airline and general-aviation traffic separately once the installation has been verified.
