Set up a joystick in Microsoft FS2004: calibrate it, assign axes and buttons, tune null zones, and fix detection, drift or reversed controls.
To set up a joystick in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS2004/FS9), connect and calibrate it in Windows first, then enable the joystick in FS2004, assign the aileron, elevator, throttle and rudder axes, and tune sensitivity and null zones. Remove duplicate assignments before testing the controls in a parked aircraft.

FS2004 joystick setup step by step
- Connect the joystick before launching FS2004. For the initial setup, plug it directly into the PC rather than an unpowered USB hub. Windows must recognise the controller before FS2004 can use it.
- Test and calibrate it in Windows. Press Windows key and R, enter
joy.cpl, select the controller and open its properties. Test every axis and button, then use the calibration option if one is available. Move each axis through its full travel and allow spring-loaded controls to return to centre. - Open the FS2004 assignments screen. From the opening screen, enter Settings and choose the controls options. During a flight, use Options > Controls > Assignments. Make sure joystick input is enabled;
Ctrl+Ktoggles it and is sometimes pressed accidentally. - Select the correct device. Open the Joystick Axes section and choose the controller from the Joystick type list. With a separate stick, throttle and pedals, configure each device in turn.
- Assign the primary axes. Select an aircraft control, choose the change-assignment command and move only the intended physical axis. Confirm that FS2004 detected the correct axis, especially on throttles with several rotary controls.
- Remove duplicate axis assignments. Aileron, elevator, rudder and throttle should normally each be controlled by one physical axis. Clear unwanted defaults from other connected devices; duplicated throttle or rudder assignments are a common cause of jumping and resistance.
- Assign useful buttons. In the Buttons/Keys section, add brakes, pitch trim, flaps, landing gear and views as needed. A POV hat is best used for looking around. Avoid putting flight controls on both an analogue axis and increase/decrease buttons.
- Adjust sensitivity and null zones. Open Options > Controls > Sensitivities. Start with high sensitivity and a small null zone, then increase the null zone only enough to stop unwanted movement around the centre.
- Test before take-off. Load a familiar default aircraft, switch the autopilot off and centre the trim. Watch the cockpit controls or external control surfaces while moving each axis, then perform a slow taxi test.
Which joystick axes should I assign in FS2004?
The four essential assignments are aileron, elevator, throttle and rudder. Use axis assignments rather than button commands so FS2004 receives the full range of movement.

If an axis moves in the wrong direction, use the reverse option for that assignment. Toe-brake and throttle axes often need this; do not reverse an axis merely to compensate for an incorrect physical calibration.
Two-position hardware switches can become out of step with FS2004 when assigned to toggle commands such as landing gear. Momentary joystick buttons are more reliable for those commands unless the hardware produces separate on and off inputs.
What sensitivity and null-zone settings work best?
A good starting point is high sensitivity with the lowest null zone that keeps a centred joystick steady. FS2004 does not provide the detailed response-curve editor found in newer simulators, so large reductions in sensitivity can make the aircraft feel sluggish or limit useful control response.
- Aileron and elevator: use high sensitivity and a small null zone. Add more null zone only if the centred stick produces movement.
- Twist rudder: a slightly larger null zone may help because twist mechanisms often develop centre noise.
- Separate rudder pedals: keep the null zone low unless Windows shows jitter around the centre.
- Throttle: use high sensitivity and little or no null zone so the full lever travel remains available.
If the virtual control does not reach full travel, recalibrate the device and raise sensitivity. If it reaches full travel but feels too abrupt, reduce sensitivity gradually rather than masking the problem with a large null zone.
Why does FS2004 not detect my joystick?
If the controller does not appear in joy.cpl, the fault is outside FS2004 and must be fixed in Windows first. Check the USB connection, required device driver and any hardware mode switch before changing simulator settings.
- Close FS2004 completely. The simulator reads connected controllers during startup, so attaching one while it is running may not update the device list correctly.
- Confirm Windows input. In
joy.cpl, verify that axes and buttons respond without freezing or jumping. - Restart FS2004 and enable joystick input. Check the Controls menu and press
Ctrl+Konce if the joystick has been disabled. - Check the selected Joystick type. FS2004 may be displaying assignments for another controller, particularly when a gamepad, throttle or virtual device is also present.
- Try the device's legacy-compatible mode. If the manufacturer provides a choice of controller modes, FS2004 generally needs the mode exposed to Windows as a conventional joystick or DirectInput-compatible device.

Why are the controls reversed, drifting or fighting each other?
Reversed movement usually needs the axis reverse option, while drifting or fighting controls point to calibration, centre noise, trim or duplicate assignments.
- Constant drift in Windows and FS2004: recalibrate the controller. If the centre still jitters, increase that axis's null zone slightly.
- Movement only inside FS2004: inspect every connected device for duplicate assignments, then centre the aircraft trim and switch off the autopilot.
- Throttle jumps between values: clear throttle assignments from unused sliders, gamepads and other controllers.
- Only part of the range works: repeat Windows calibration using the full physical travel, then check FS2004 sensitivity.
- The aircraft yaws during take-off: propeller effects and crosswind can produce genuine yaw. Test the joystick in calm conditions and inspect the rudder position before assuming the axis is faulty.
Why does FS2004 forget my joystick assignments?
Assignments may disappear if Windows presents the hardware as a different controller or FS2004 cannot save its user settings. Keep older controllers connected to the same USB sockets, exit FS2004 normally after making changes and use the same Windows account each time.
If every control change resets after restarting, check that the Windows account can write to FS2004's user configuration location. Reassigning the controls repeatedly will not solve a settings-permission problem.
