Approach types available for practice

X-Plane supports the main instrument approach types, but what you can fly depends on the selected aircraft's equipment, system modelling and installed navigation data.

How should I set up instrument approach practice?

Build each X-Plane session around one specific skill and use a repeatable starting point, aircraft configuration and weather profile.

  1. Choose one objective. Decide whether you are practising the instrument scan, hand-flown tracking, autopilot mode management, approach configuration or the missed approach. Trying to assess all of them at once makes errors harder to diagnose.
  2. Check the chart against X-Plane. Compare the runway, initial and final approach fixes, frequencies, final approach course and missed-approach instructions with the procedure loaded in the aircraft. A chart and navigation database from different cycles may contain renamed fixes, changed altitudes or a renumbered runway.
  3. Select a useful starting position. Fly the full arrival when practising workload and preparation. For repeated intercepts, place the aircraft far enough before an initial approach fix to configure, brief and become established normally. Starting just outside the final approach fix encourages rushed setup.
  4. Begin in simple weather. Learn the procedure in good visibility and light wind, then add cloud, crosswind, turbulence and lower ceilings. This separates a procedure error from a basic aircraft-control problem.
  5. Brief the approach. Confirm the navigation source, frequencies, final course, altitude restrictions, minimums, missed-approach point and first missed-approach actions. For an ILS, identify the station and verify that the displayed identifier is the one expected.
  6. Fly through the missed approach. Do not end every run at minimums. Apply power, establish the required climb, manage configuration, follow the published track and handle GPS sequencing or suspension as the avionics require.
  7. Review measurable errors. Check course deviation, altitude control, airspeed, configuration timing and flight-mode annunciations. X-Plane's replay is useful for flight path and attitude, although some third-party aircraft do not restore every custom display or system state perfectly during replay.

Should I hand-fly or use the autopilot?

Use both, but treat them as different exercises: hand-flying develops the scan and control technique, while autopilot practice develops mode awareness and workload management.

  • When hand-flying: hide unnecessary map aids, trim carefully and monitor small heading and power changes rather than chasing the needles.
  • When using automation: read the flight-mode annunciator after every selection. An armed mode is waiting to capture; it is not yet controlling the aircraft.
  • For mixed practice: use the autopilot during the arrival, disconnect before the final approach fix and continue manually. On another run, keep it engaged and practise monitoring, minimums and go-around mode changes.

A mistake we see constantly is watching the magenta line while ignoring the active autopilot mode. X-Plane may display the intended route even though the autopilot is holding heading, altitude or another previously selected mode.

Why won't the ILS or RNAV approach capture?

Most capture failures come from the wrong navigation source, incorrect procedure sequencing, unsuitable interception geometry or a mismatch between the chart and navigation data.

  • No ILS indications: check electrical power, receiver selection, frequency, station identifier, aircraft position and whether the CDI is using VLOC rather than GPS.
  • Localiser captured but no glideslope: confirm that the procedure is a full ILS, arm the appropriate approach mode and intercept the glideslope from below. Arriving high is one of the most common reasons an autopilot will not capture the descent.
  • GPS route displayed but not followed: verify that GPS is the active CDI source, the expected leg is active and lateral navigation is armed or engaged. Our G1000 flight-plan and guidance troubleshooting covers incorrect active legs, GPS/VLOC selection and approach sequencing.
  • No RNAV vertical guidance: the selected minima may provide lateral guidance only, or the simulated aircraft may not support the required SBAS or VNAV function. Do not assume that every magenta approach path includes an approved descent path.
  • Fixes or runway names differ: compare the chart cycle, installed navigation database and airport scenery. Runway renumbering and updated procedure design can make an otherwise correct setup appear broken.
  • Missed approach will not sequence: some Garmin-style units suspend automatic sequencing at the missed-approach point. Begin the missed approach, then release suspension when the unit and procedure require it.

Third-party aircraft may use custom navigation and autopilot code rather than X-Plane's standard logic. In that case, follow the aircraft documentation and do not assume that controls behave exactly like those in a default aircraft. Avoid time acceleration during interception and final approach, as it can destabilise control and undermine the exercise.

Can X-Plane instrument practice count as flight training?

A normal home X-Plane installation is useful procedural practice, but it does not automatically qualify as loggable instrument training.

X-Plane software can form part of an approved training device, yet approval applies to the complete hardware, software configuration and operating conditions—not simply to the simulator program. Logging credit depends on the aviation authority, device approval and any instructor or operator requirements.

Use home practice to rehearse flows, scans, navigation and decision-making. Control loading, motion cues, radio workload, weather effects and individual add-on systems may differ from the real aircraft, so use authorised charts and aircraft documentation for real-world flying rather than relying on the simulator alone.
