What instrument approaches can X-Plane practise?
X-Plane can simulate the principal instrument approach types, but the usable procedures and guidance depend on the selected aircraft, its avionics modelling and the installed navigation database.

The avionics matter more than the label on the aircraft-selection screen. A procedure may appear in an FMS database even when that FMS does not reproduce every real-world function, annunciation or equipment approval associated with it.
Which chart or map should I use?
Use the actual instrument approach chart for the procedure; X-Plane's local or moving map is useful for orientation and debriefing, but it is not a substitute for an approach plate.
The chart supplies information a basic map cannot: applicable minima, final approach course, altitude restrictions, missed-approach instructions, notes and equipment requirements. Select the correct minima line for the simulated equipment. LNAV, LNAV/VNAV and LPV are not interchangeable, while decision altitude and minimum descent altitude call for different handling.
Compare the plate with the procedure loaded in X-Plane. Check the airport and runway, fix names, radio frequencies, final course, altitude constraints and missed-approach route. Runway renumbering or navigation data from a different cycle can create a convincing but incorrect route.
For a simulator-only exercise, the chart and navigation database must describe the same version of the procedure. For real-world preparation, use authorised, current charts and aircraft data; never carry an obsolete simulator chart or X-Plane map into an actual flight.
How should I set up X-Plane instrument approach practice?
Build each session around one measurable skill, then use a repeatable aircraft state, starting point and weather profile.
- Choose suitable equipment. Confirm that the aircraft has the receiver or FMS required by the approach. Do not select an NDB procedure in an aircraft without an ADF or expect LPV guidance from a navigator that does not model it.
- Set one objective. Practise the instrument scan, raw-data tracking, autopilot modes, configuration management or missed approach separately before combining them.
- Check the chart and database. Resolve any disagreement in fixes, frequencies, runways or altitudes before flying. Do not improvise between two versions of a procedure.
- Start early enough. Use a published transition or position the aircraft far enough before the initial or final approach fix to brief, slow down and become established normally. Starting just outside the final approach fix produces rushed setup and unrealistic intercepts.
- Verify the route after repositioning. Moving the aircraft does not necessarily activate the correct FMS leg or reset the autopilot. Check the active leg, navigation source, selected altitude and flight-mode annunciator.
- Begin with simple weather. Learn the procedure in good visibility and light wind. Add cloud, a lower ceiling, crosswind and turbulence only after the basic sequence is repeatable.
- Brief before the intercept. Confirm frequencies, station identification, final course, altitude restrictions, navigation source, minimums, missed-approach point and the first actions after going around.
- Fly the missed approach. Apply power, control pitch, manage configuration and follow the published route. Check whether the navigator suspends automatic sequencing at the missed-approach point and requires pilot action to continue.
- Measure the result. Review heading, course deviation, altitude, speed, configuration timing and every autopilot mode change. A smooth landing does not rescue an approach flown below a restriction or in the wrong navigation mode.

Should I hand-fly or use the autopilot?
Use both, but treat hand-flying and automation as separate skills with different failure points.
- Hand-fly to develop control and scan. Trim the aircraft, make small corrections and scan attitude, performance and navigation instruments instead of chasing a fully deflected needle.
- Use the autopilot to practise mode awareness. Read the flight-mode annunciator after every selection. An armed mode is waiting for capture; it is not yet controlling the aircraft.
- Combine them deliberately. Use automation during the arrival and disconnect before final on one run. On the next, leave it engaged and concentrate on mode changes, minimums and the go-around.
A mistake we see constantly is following the magenta route on the display without checking what the autopilot is actually doing. The route can be correct while the aircraft remains in heading, altitude hold or another previously selected mode.
Why will the ILS or RNAV approach not capture?
Most X-Plane approach failures come from the wrong navigation source, an inactive procedure leg, unsuitable intercept geometry or disagreement between the chart and navigation database.
Why is there no localiser or glideslope capture?
An ILS usually fails to capture because the receiver is not supplying valid ILS guidance or the aircraft reaches the beam in the wrong mode, position or altitude.
- Check electrical and avionics power, the ILS frequency and the station identifier.

- Use a sensible intercept angle and capture the localiser before expecting the glideslope.
- Approach the glideslope from below. Arriving above it is one of the most common reasons the descent mode remains armed without capturing.
- Arm the aircraft's approach mode and verify the annunciation. Pressing a button is not evidence that the requested mode became active.
Why does RNAV show a route but not follow it?
RNAV guidance usually fails when GPS or FMS is not the active source, the wrong leg is active, a route discontinuity remains or lateral navigation has not engaged.
Inspect the active leg rather than only the magenta line. Confirm that the approach has been loaded or activated as appropriate, the aircraft is within sensible interception geometry and the flight-mode annunciator shows the intended lateral mode. Garmin-equipped users can review the X-Plane 12 G1000 setup and approach controls before troubleshooting the autopilot.
If there is no RNAV vertical guidance, read the chart's minima line and the navigator's annunciation. Some procedures provide lateral guidance only, and an advisory descent path is not the same as an approved glideslope or glidepath.
Why do the fixes or runway names differ?
Different fixes, courses or runway numbers normally indicate a mismatch between the chart, X-Plane's navigation data and the airport scenery.
Check all three rather than editing the flight plan until it looks plausible. A renamed fix, revised procedure or renumbered runway can leave the avionics and visible scenery describing different airport states. Third-party aircraft may also use custom navigation or autopilot code, so their documented behaviour can differ from X-Plane's standard systems.
What about replays in X-Plane 12?
X-Plane 12 replay is valuable for reviewing flight path, attitude, configuration and intercept geometry, but it is not a guaranteed recording of every custom avionics or plugin state.
- Enter Replay Mode. Open it from X-Plane's Flight menu after completing the approach.
- Return to the intercept. Use the replay timeline and speed controls to inspect localiser or final-course capture, descent initiation, configuration and the missed approach.
- Change viewpoints carefully. Cockpit view helps with attitude and control movement; an external view makes unstable pitch changes, drift and poor intercept geometry easier to see.
- Save the replay when needed. Saved replay files use the
.repformat and are normally stored underOutput/replaysin the X-Plane installation.
Some third-party aircraft use custom displays, flight controls or systems that do not rewind faithfully. Needles may jump, screens may reset and switches may disagree with the recorded aircraft path. When that happens, use replay to assess the trajectory and handling, not as proof of the exact cockpit state.
Saved replays are also dependent on the simulator, aircraft and supporting content that created them. Treat them as debriefing files rather than portable video, especially after changing X-Plane versions or updating an add-on aircraft.
Does this work in X-Plane 11 as well as X-Plane 12?
Yes. X-Plane 11 and X-Plane 12 can both support useful IFR approach practice, and the same chart checking, avionics setup, interception and missed-approach principles apply.
The practical differences come from the chosen aircraft, avionics implementation, navigation data, weather setup and installed add-ons. Menus, assignments and individual systems may differ, while saved situations and replays should not be assumed to transfer cleanly between versions. For procedure training, a well-understood X-Plane 11 aircraft is more useful than an unfamiliar X-Plane 12 aircraft with more complex systems.
Can X-Plane instrument practice count as flight training?
A normal home X-Plane installation provides valuable procedural practice, but it does not automatically qualify as loggable instrument training.
X-Plane software can be part of an approved training device, yet approval applies to the complete hardware, software configuration and operating conditions—not simply to owning the simulator. Logging credit depends on the relevant aviation authority, device approval and any instructor or operator requirements.
Use home X-Plane IFR sessions to rehearse scans, navigation, avionics flows, briefings and decisions. Control forces, motion cues, radio workload, equipment faults and weather sensations can differ substantially from an aircraft, so simulator proficiency must not be treated as a replacement for authorised instruction or real-world operating data.
