What aircraft is Air Force One? Learn why the VC-25A Boeing 747 is used, who flies it and how each presidential mission operates.
Air Force One is not a specific aeroplane; it is the radio call sign used by any US Air Force aircraft while the President of the United States is aboard. In normal presidential service, the familiar aircraft are two Boeing 747-200B-derived VC-25As, operated by dedicated US Air Force crews.
Is Air Force One always a Boeing 747?
No. In Aviation & Real-World Flying terms, the key distinction is between an aircraft type and an operational call sign. The President could board another US Air Force aircraft, and that aircraft would use the call sign Air Force One for the presidential flight.

The two VC-25As carry the tail numbers 28000 and 29000. A flyable FS2004 representation of the VC-25A shows the familiar 747-200 profile, but the real aircraft contains extensive military, communications and presidential-support modifications.

How is Air Force One operated?
Air Force One is flown and maintained by the Presidential Airlift Group, part of the US Air Force’s 89th Airlift Wing at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. Each trip is a coordinated military and security operation rather than an ordinary executive flight.
- The mission is planned. The White House Military Office, Presidential Airlift Group, US Secret Service, air traffic authorities and organisations at the destination coordinate the schedule, airports and support requirements. Complete routing and security details are not normally made public.
- The aircraft and crew are prepared. Specially selected military pilots, aircrew and maintainers inspect and configure the VC-25A. Fuel, catering, communications equipment, baggage and mission-specific supplies must be loaded without disrupting security controls.
- The airport is secured. Access to the aircraft and its operating area is tightly controlled. Temporary flight restrictions or other airspace measures may be imposed, while ground movements are coordinated with airport and security personnel.
- The flight operates under air traffic control. Air Force One receives carefully coordinated handling and high operational priority, but it still works with controllers and follows applicable military and civil aviation procedures.
- Support assets move separately. Cargo aircraft may carry vehicles, helicopters, communications equipment and advance teams before the President arrives. The exact package changes with the destination and mission.
How is the VC-25A different from a normal Boeing 747?
The VC-25A uses the 747-200B as its foundation, but it is configured as an airborne presidential workplace and military command platform rather than an airliner.
- Secure communications: the President and staff can communicate with government and military organisations from the air.
- Working accommodation: the cabin includes offices, meeting areas and separate spaces for senior staff, security personnel, guests and the travelling press.
- Medical capability: dedicated facilities and trained personnel allow medical problems to be handled during a mission.
- Extended endurance: the VC-25A can be refuelled in flight, although crew, maintenance and human requirements still impose practical limits.
- Protective systems: the aircraft has specialised defensive and communications equipment, but many technical details remain classified.
Claims about escape pods, presidential parachutes and similar film-style equipment are not supported by credible public information. The real protection comes from planning, controlled access, defensive systems, redundancy and the wider security operation.
Does Air Force One fly with fighters and a backup aircraft?
Not as a fixed formation on every trip. Air Force One is one part of a larger operation, but support aircraft usually travel according to their own schedules and may arrive well before the presidential aircraft.
Fighter escorts can be assigned when threat conditions or a particular mission require them, but they are not a routine visible feature of every domestic or overseas flight. A backup transport may also be positioned for contingency purposes; the notion that the second VC-25A always follows directly behind is misleading.
What if the President flies on another military aircraft?
The call sign changes with the operating service. A US Marine Corps helicopter carrying the President becomes Marine One, while a Navy aircraft would use Navy One. A civilian aircraft carrying the President can use Executive One.
The same rule explains why an empty VC-25A is not Air Force One. The President’s presence activates the call sign; the paint scheme, tail number and aircraft assignment do not.
What aircraft will replace the VC-25A?
The planned replacement is the VC-25B, based on the larger Boeing 747-8 airframe. Two aircraft are being converted for the presidential mission with new communications, electrical, cabin and defensive systems.
Testing, military modification and acceptance determine when the VC-25B enters operational service, and programme dates can move.
