What qualifications are needed for ATC in India?

To become a civil air traffic controller in India, applicants normally enter through Airports Authority of India recruitment for Junior Executive (Air Traffic Control). They need an eligible science or engineering bachelor’s degree, Physics and Mathematics in the prescribed curriculum, English proficiency, the notice’s age and nationality requirements, plus medical, voice, psychological and security clearance.

What academic qualifications does AAI require?

The standard Airports Authority of India qualification for Junior Executive (Air Traffic Control), commonly shortened to JE (ATC), is one of these two degree routes:

• Science route: a full-time, regular three-year bachelor’s degree in science with Physics and Mathematics.
• Engineering route: a full-time, regular bachelor’s degree in engineering in any discipline, with Physics and Mathematics included in the semester curriculum as required by the recruitment notice.

The degree must come from a recognised institution accepted under the advertisement. Applicants must also have the specified proficiency in spoken and written English at 10+2 level; AAI notices normally require English to have been passed as a subject in Class 10 or Class 12.

A diploma, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering qualification or pilot licence does not replace the required bachelor’s degree. Nor should an applicant assume that a postgraduate qualification repairs an ineligible bachelor’s degree: document verification is based on the precise educational wording in the recruitment notice.

If the marksheets use titles such as Engineering Physics or Mathematics-I, obtain a complete transcript or formal clarification from the university. A recurring problem we see is candidates relying on the degree title while their documents do not clearly prove the required subjects.

Age, nationality and application cut-off

AAI civil ATC recruitment is normally open to Indian nationals. For JE (ATC), the maximum age has commonly been 27 years for an unreserved applicant on the advertisement’s specified cut-off date.

Recruitment notices generally provide age relaxation for eligible categories, commonly three years for OBC non-creamy-layer candidates and five years for SC/ST candidates, with other relaxations applied where advertised. The exact notice controls: age is calculated on its named date, not the examination date or expected joining date.

Final-year students should not assume they qualify. Their result and degree evidence must be available by the stage or cut-off stated in the active advertisement.

Is a pilot licence or ATC experience required?

No pilot licence, flying experience or previous controlling experience is normally required for direct JE (ATC) recruitment. AAI selects graduates and provides specialist training after recruitment.

Flight simulation and online controlling can improve phraseology, scanning and traffic awareness, but they carry no civil licensing credit. Simulator-network ATC training and ratings are recreational qualifications, not substitutes for AAI selection, approved training or a DGCA licence.

What tests follow the eligibility check?

Meeting the degree and age conditions only makes a candidate eligible to enter the selection process. The precise order can change between advertisements, but AAI recruitment commonly includes:

1. Computer-based examination: the advertised syllabus generally combines English, reasoning, aptitude and general awareness with Physics and Mathematics at the stated level.
2. Application verification and voice test: officials check the original eligibility documents and assess whether spoken communication is sufficiently clear for operational use.
3. Psychological assessment: this examines suitability for safety-critical work involving concentration, prioritisation and decision-making.
4. Medical and substance screening: candidates must satisfy AAI’s medical requirements and any prescribed psychoactive-substances testing.
5. Background verification: identity, antecedent and security checks must be completed successfully.
6. Initial ATC training: selected recruits must pass theoretical and practical training and meet the applicable DGCA licensing, rating and unit-endorsement requirements before controlling traffic independently.

Medical standards and eyesight

Wearing spectacles does not automatically disqualify an ATC applicant. The decisive issue is whether the candidate meets the recruitment medical requirements and the applicable Class 3 ATCO medical standard, including standards for vision, colour perception, hearing, speech and general fitness.

Colour-vision deficiency can be particularly significant because controllers must interpret colour-coded operational information and light signals. Only the authorised medical process can determine fitness; an ordinary employment medical or a candidate’s own assessment is not a substitute.

Common reasons eligible-looking applications fail

• The bachelor’s degree does not contain both Physics and Mathematics in the form required by the notice.
• A diploma or postgraduate degree is submitted as a substitute for the specified bachelor’s qualification.
• The applicant cannot document English as a Class 10 or Class 12 subject.
• The degree result was issued after the relevant eligibility cut-off.
• Age was calculated against the examination date rather than the notice’s cut-off date.
• The category or age-relaxation certificate is missing, expired or in an unacceptable format.
• The candidate passes the written examination but fails document, voice, psychological, medical or background checks. Examination marks do not override basic ineligibility.

Before applying, we recommend matching every line of the active AAI advertisement against the degree certificate, all semester marksheets, English evidence, date of birth and category documents. Recruitment wording can change, so an older advertisement is useful preparation but not proof of eligibility for a later intake.

Do the same qualifications apply to military ATC?

No. The Indian Armed Forces recruit and train controllers through their own service-entry routes, with separate educational, age, medical and service requirements. Qualifying for AAI JE (ATC) does not automatically qualify someone for military ATC, and military training does not automatically grant a civil ATCO licence or AAI appointment.
