The Airbus A380-800 is 72.72 metres long, has a 79.75-metre wingspan and stands 24.09 metres high. Airbus quotes 545 passengers in a typical four-class cabin, against a certified maximum of 853. Its defining features are two full-length passenger decks, four engines, fly-by-wire controls and a 22-wheel undercarriage.

The 79.75-metre wingspan places the aircraft in ICAO aerodrome code letter F, whose span band stops at 80 metres. For context, our comparison with other large Airbus aircraft shows how much bigger the A380 is than the company’s twin-engine wide-bodies.

How many passengers can an Airbus A380 carry?

Airbus quotes 545 passengers for a representative four-class layout and 853 passengers as the certified maximum.

The 853 figure is an evacuation and exit-limit figure for an exceptionally dense cabin, not the number carried by a normal scheduled A380. Operational layouts are usually far below it and can range from the low 400s to more than 600 seats.

  • High-premium configuration: more suites, business seats, lounges, larger galleys and additional lavatories reduce capacity.
  • Typical mixed-class configuration: Airbus uses 545 seats as its four-class reference figure.
  • High-density configuration: more economy seating can push capacity above 600, but still below the certified limit.

A mistake we see constantly is treating 853 as the standard capacity. For a particular flight, the airline’s seat map is authoritative because suites, bars, crew-rest areas and galley positions can remove substantial numbers of seats. That capacity-versus-demand problem also forms part of the operational explanation for why A380 production ended.

How are the Airbus A380’s decks arranged?

The A380 has two passenger decks connected by internal staircases, with baggage and freight holds beneath the main deck.

The upper deck extends for essentially the full usable cabin length, unlike the Boeing 747’s shorter upper deck. Forward and rear staircases connect it to the main deck. At equipped gates, passengers can board both levels directly through two or three passenger boarding bridges.

Does the A380 have three decks?

The A380 has two passenger decks, not three. The lower baggage and cargo hold is sometimes informally counted as another level, but it has no normal passenger cabin or seating.

Features such as showers, private suites, bars and lounges are airline-selected interiors rather than standard fixtures in every A380. They should not be used to identify the basic deck arrangement.

What are the A380’s key design features?

The A380 combines four engines, an exceptionally large wing, 22 wheels, weight-saving materials and Airbus digital flight-control technology.

  • Four turbofan engines: operators received aircraft powered by either Rolls-Royce Trent 900 or Engine Alliance GP7200-family engines. The fitted engine family is tied to the aircraft subvariant.
  • Large swept wing: its 845 m² wing uses extensive high-lift devices and vertical wingtip fences. The fences should not be confused with the taller blended winglets fitted to some smaller airliners.
  • Five landing-gear assemblies: one nose unit, two wing gears and two body gears provide 22 wheels in total, spreading the aircraft’s weight across the pavement.
  • Advanced structures: carbon-fibre composites and GLARE, a glass-fibre and aluminium laminate, help control structural weight in the fuselage and wing.
  • Airbus cockpit architecture: the two-pilot flight deck uses side-sticks, digital fly-by-wire controls, large displays and centralised systems monitoring.
  • Full-length double-deck fuselage: the broad main deck and narrower upper deck create far more usable cabin floor area than a conventional single-deck wide-body.

Why does airport compatibility matter?

The A380 normally needs Code F taxiway clearances, a suitable stand, adequate pavement strength and airport handling equipment sized for the aircraft.

A runway being long enough does not automatically make an airport A380-compatible. Flight planners must also consider taxiway width and separation, wingtip clearance, pavement classification, stand geometry, rescue provision and passenger-bridge access. Temperature, elevation, wind and take-off weight still determine the runway distance required for an individual departure.

In a flight simulator, older airport scenery may lack correctly spaced Code F stands or upper-deck boarding bridges. Wingtip clipping and a missing third bridge can therefore be scenery limitations rather than faults with the aircraft model.

Are all Airbus A380 versions the same size?

Every completed production aircraft belongs to the A380-800 family and shares the same principal external dimensions.

Designations such as A380-841, A380-842 and A380-861 identify certified subvariants, chiefly associated with engine installations and weight approvals; they are not shorter or stretched cabins. The proposed A380F freighter and stretched A380-900 did not enter airline service, so specifications attributed to them should not be mixed with those of the operational A380-800.
