The Airbus A380 normally cruises at Mach 0.85, about 488 knots (903 km/h or 561 mph) true airspeed at altitude. Its operational limits are Mach 0.89 and 340 knots indicated airspeed; whichever applies must be observed, so neither limit is a normal target speed.

The take-off and approach ranges are illustrations, not fixed A380 speeds. Aircraft weight, runway length, pressure altitude, temperature, wind, flap configuration and runway condition all affect the calculated value.
What is the Airbus A380's maximum speed?
The A380-800's maximum operating limits are VMO 340 KIAS and MMO Mach 0.89.
VMO is the indicated-airspeed limit used where dynamic pressure is the controlling factor. MMO becomes the relevant limit at high altitude, where compressibility and Mach effects matter. The aircraft must remain below whichever limit is reached first; pilots do not combine the two figures or cruise at the limit.

Why does the A380's cockpit show less than 488 knots?
The cockpit can show a much lower indicated speed because 488 knots is an approximate true airspeed, not the indicated airspeed shown on the primary flight display.
- Indicated airspeed (KIAS) reflects the aerodynamic pressure sensed by the aircraft and is used for most low-altitude limitations and handling references.
- True airspeed (KTAS) is the aircraft's actual speed through the surrounding air. At cruise altitude it is much higher than indicated airspeed.
- Mach number compares true airspeed with the local speed of sound. The conversion from Mach 0.85 to mph or km/h changes slightly with atmospheric temperature.
- Groundspeed is speed over the Earth's surface. A tailwind can push it above 488 knots, while a headwind can reduce it, without changing the aircraft's Mach number.

How fast does an A380 take off and land?
An A380 commonly rotates at roughly 145–165 KIAS and approaches at roughly 130–150 KIAS, but the crew must use the speeds calculated for that particular flight.
Take-off calculations produce V1, VR and V2 rather than one universal “take-off speed”. For landing, the flight management system derives a reference speed and the crew applies the required approach correction. A lightly loaded aircraft on a calm day will not use the same figures as a heavy aircraft facing gusts or a contaminated runway.

Using A380 speeds in a flight simulator
At cruise, command approximately Mach 0.85 or use a correctly configured managed-speed mode; never enter 488 while the autopilot is expecting KIAS.
- Do not chase groundspeed. Wind can change it substantially while the aircraft remains at the correct Mach number.
- Do not use Mach 0.89 as cruise speed. It is an operating limit, not a normal performance target.
- Check the selected unit. Confusing KIAS, KTAS and Mach is the most common cause of apparent overspeed.
- Allow for add-on fidelity. A simplified A380 flight model may not reproduce the real crossover between indicated-airspeed and Mach limitations accurately.
