What speed do commercial airliners cruise at?

In real-world commercial aviation, most jet airliners cruise at Mach 0.78–0.85, roughly 450–500 knots true airspeed (830–930 km/h or 520–580 mph) at normal cruising altitude. Narrow-body jets commonly sit near Mach 0.78–0.80; long-haul wide-bodies are often around Mach 0.84–0.85, depending on model and operating conditions.

Why is airliner cruise speed stated as Mach?

High-altitude jets use Mach because compressibility and aerodynamic limits depend on speed relative to the local speed of sound.

  • Mach number is the aircraft’s speed divided by the local speed of sound. Mach 0.80 means 80% of that local speed.
  • Indicated airspeed is the speed shown by the airspeed indicator and reflects aerodynamic pressure.
  • True airspeed is the aircraft’s actual speed through the surrounding air mass.
  • Groundspeed is speed over the ground after wind is included.

At around 35,000 feet, Mach 0.80 is commonly about 460 knots true airspeed, while the indicated airspeed may be only 250–280 knots. Does wind change an airliner’s cruise speed?

Wind changes groundspeed, but it does not directly change the aircraft’s Mach number or true airspeed through the air.

An airliner cruising at 470 knots true airspeed with an 80-knot tailwind has a groundspeed of roughly 550 knots. With an 80-knot headwind, that falls to about 390 knots. This is why flight-tracking displays may show apparently slow or exceptionally fast airliners even though both are flying the same cruise Mach.

Why do airlines not cruise at maximum speed?

Airliners normally cruise below their maximum operating Mach because the last few knots cost disproportionate amounts of fuel and reduce the margin to aerodynamic limits.

The flight-management system usually calculates an economy speed from the airline’s cost index, aircraft weight, altitude and forecast winds. A low cost index favours fuel saving; a higher value gives more weight to journey time. Air traffic control, turbulence and schedule recovery can also change the selected Mach number.

Maximum operating Mach, usually marked as MMO, is a limit rather than a normal target. Flying close to it leaves less margin for turbulence, temperature changes and acceleration during a descent. What cruise speed should I use in a flight simulator?

Use the aircraft’s published normal or economy cruise Mach, not its maximum speed and not a target groundspeed.

  1. Check the aircraft type. A modern narrow-body will often use about Mach 0.78–0.80, while many long-haul jets cruise near Mach 0.84–0.85.
  2. Follow the IAS-to-Mach schedule. During the climb, jets normally hold an indicated airspeed before changing to Mach control near the crossover altitude.
  3. Use the managed or economy target when available. A detailed flight-management system should calculate an appropriate cruise Mach from the route and cost index.
  4. Compare the correct value. Monitor Mach or true airspeed when checking cruise performance. Do not chase groundspeed, because it rises and falls with the wind.

Common cruise-speed mistakes

  • Entering a true-airspeed figure such as 470 knots as though it were indicated airspeed.
  • Flying at MMO because an aircraft specification describes it as the maximum speed.
  • Trying to maintain the same groundspeed into both headwinds and tailwinds.
  • Expecting one Mach number to produce an identical true airspeed at every altitude and temperature.

If the simulated aircraft accelerates towards its overspeed warning, reduce the selected Mach or return to the flight-management system’s economy speed. Also check that the aircraft is not descending while still holding its cruise thrust or Mach target, a common cause of unexpected acceleration.
