What is an airport stand, and how is it different from a gate?

In real-world aviation, an airport stand is a designated position on the apron where an aircraft parks for boarding, loading, refuelling or servicing. A gate is the terminal-side passenger facility and boarding point associated with a flight. Some gates lead directly to a contact stand; remote, cargo and maintenance stands may have no terminal gate.
Airport stand vs gate: what is the key difference?
The stand is where the aircraft stops; the gate is where passengers are processed for boarding or arrival. The terms are often used interchangeably in everyday airline language because many terminal gates connect directly to their associated stands.

What types of airport stands are there?
Airport stands are classified mainly by their location and intended use.
- Contact stand: A terminal-adjacent position. It commonly uses a passenger boarding bridge, although some airports board by stairs or a short walk across a controlled area.
- Remote stand: A parking position away from the terminal. Passengers normally travel between the terminal gate and aircraft by bus, then board using stairs.
- Cargo or service stand: A position arranged for freight loading, catering, maintenance or other ground handling rather than passenger boarding.
- General-aviation stand: Parking for business aircraft and light aeroplanes, often without any corresponding terminal gate.
Parking stand, aircraft stand and parking bay are often used for the same physical position. “Ramp” is commonly used for the apron in North American aviation, but it describes the broader operating area rather than one precise parking spot.
Can a stand number differ from the gate number?
Yes, a flight's stand number and passenger gate number can be completely different. Gate assignments manage terminal space, while stand assignments manage physical aircraft parking.
At a simple contact gate, Gate 12 may connect to Stand 12. Elsewhere, passengers might report to Gate B6 and then be taken by bus to Stand 214. Airports may also have overlapping stand layouts that accommodate either one large aircraft or multiple smaller aircraft, producing stand suffixes or alternative identifiers.
This is why crews should not infer the parking position from a boarding pass or terminal display. A gate change does not always mean that the aircraft has moved, particularly when remote boarding is involved.
Which location should a pilot taxi to?
A pilot should taxi to the assigned stand, using the aerodrome chart, painted stand identifier and final guidance from a marshaller or visual docking system. At some airports, apron control or a ground handler manages the final movement rather than the controller who issued the taxi route.
A common mistake is to follow a matching terminal gate number without confirming the stand. If the chart, radio instruction, stand marking or docking guidance appears to conflict, stop clear of the position and request clarification. Aircraft size restrictions, adjacent equipment and overlapping stand centre lines make guessing unsafe.
How do gates and stands work in flight simulators?
Flight simulators often use “gate”, “stand”, “parking” and “ramp” as scenery parking categories rather than strict real-world definitions. A position labelled as a gate will usually be near a terminal, but that does not guarantee a working jet bridge, suitable aircraft clearance or complete ground services.
