Assign push-to-talk (PTT) in the application that actually sends your microphone audio—usually an online ATC client, voice-chat application or in-simulator radio add-on. What does PTT mean in aviation?

PTT means push-to-talk: hold the button to transmit over the selected radio and release it to listen. In a real aircraft the switch is commonly placed on the yoke, control stick or microphone; in general flight simulation, the same function can be assigned to a controller button or keyboard key.

PTT does not tune a frequency, select COM1 or COM2, open an ATC window or choose a menu response. It only keys the voice system that owns the microphone. A mistake we see constantly is assigning a simulator radio command while the actual audio is being handled by a separate online ATC client.

Where should I bind the push-to-talk key?

The PTT binding belongs in the software that transmits your voice, not automatically in the simulator’s controller settings.

Use a direct controller binding when the voice application supports it. Direct input normally continues to work while the simulator has focus and avoids problems caused by keyboard emulation.

If the application accepts only a PTT key, configure the controller button to emit an otherwise unused keyboard key or combination. The mapping must send key-down when pressed and key-up when released; toggle, repeat and macro behaviour can leave the transmitter stuck open.

How do I assign the yoke or joystick button?

The reliable procedure is to identify the physical button first, bind it in the transmitting application and then remove any conflicting simulator assignment.

  1. Connect every controller before opening the software. Some applications enumerate yokes, joysticks and throttle quadrants only when they start.
  2. Identify the PTT owner. Decide whether voice is handled by an online ATC client, an add-on, the simulator itself or a general chat application.
  3. Test the physical button in Windows. Press Windows+R, enter joy.cpl, select the correct controller and open its test page. The corresponding button indicator should illuminate when pressed and clear immediately on release.   4. Open the voice application’s bindings. Look for Push to Talk, PTT, Transmit, Radio Transmit or a COM-specific transmit command.
  5. Capture the input. Select the command and press the chosen yoke or joystick button once. Confirm that the correct device and button number appear.
  6. Save the active profile. Check that you edited the profile actually used with the connected controller, aircraft or radio configuration.

  8. Test with the simulator focused. Hold PTT, speak, watch the transmit and microphone-level indicators, then release it. The indicator must return to receive mode immediately.

A trigger or rotary control may be reported as an axis rather than a button. Many voice clients accept only digital buttons, so choose a true push button instead of trying to use an analogue axis threshold.

Which push button on a joystick should I use?

Choose a momentary button that can be held without changing your grip, moving a flight control or looking away from the instruments.

  • A yoke thumb button or an easy-to-reach stick thumb or little-finger button is usually suitable.
  • Avoid trim, brakes, autopilot disconnect, weapon release and view controls.
  • Avoid maintained toggle switches unless the application explicitly offers toggle-to-talk.
  • Hat switches are poor choices because they are often needed for views or trim and may be detected as a point-of-view control rather than a button.
  • If the voice system has separate COM1 and COM2 transmit commands, use two clearly distinguishable buttons. If it transmits through the selected radio, one PTT button is enough.

How do I talk to ATC in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024’s standard ATC interaction is menu-driven; assigning a joystick PTT button does not by itself make the built-in ATC recognise spoken radio calls.

To speak to human online ATC on PC, run the supported network client, select the correct microphone and bind PTT inside that client. Tune the required frequency in the aircraft and confirm which radio is selected for transmission. A speech-based ATC or radio add-on may provide its own PTT command. Bind that command inside the add-on unless its documentation specifically directs you to a simulator control.

Does the PTT key work differently with the Steam version?

No. Launching a simulator through Steam does not change which application owns aviation PTT. Bind online ATC in the online client and an add-on’s speech function in that add-on.

Steam voice chat has its own PTT setting, which controls Steam chat rather than the aircraft radio. Steam Input can be used to make a controller button emit a keyboard key when a voice client lacks direct joystick support, but check for duplicate actions: the simulator may see the physical button while the voice client receives the emulated key.

Can I use an Xbox controller for PTT?

Yes, an Xbox controller connected to a Windows PC can normally be used as a push-to-talk controller if the voice application recognises its buttons or accepts an emulated PTT key.

On an Xbox Series X|S console, only commands exposed by the simulator, supported add-on or console voice system can be assigned. Windows tools such as joy.cpl, desktop controller mappers and PC-only online ATC clients cannot run on the console. Console party chat is separate from the simulated aircraft radio.

The same platform limitation applies to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro: a controller button can operate only a PTT function made available by software supported on that console.

Why is my push-to-talk button not detected?

A missing PTT input usually points to a hardware detection problem, the wrong controller, an unsupported input type or a profile that is not active.

  • While it is held, the transmit indicator appears and the microphone meter responds to speech.
  • After a several-second test transmission, releasing the button returns the client to receive mode without delay.
  • The test still works while the simulator is the active window.
  • The intended COM radio is selected and tuned before an operational radio check.
