How do I assign push-to-talk to a yoke or joystick button?

Assign push-to-talk in the voice or online ATC client that handles your radio audio, not only in the flight simulator. Open that application's controls or hotkeys page, select Push to Talk, press the chosen yoke or joystick button, save the profile, then confirm its transmit indicator appears only while the button is held.

For general PC flight simulation, including Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and DCS, first identify which application owns the voice function. A control assigned inside the simulator does not automatically become the push-to-talk input for a separate voice client.

Where do I bind push-to-talk?

The push-to-talk binding belongs in the application that actually transmits your microphone audio. Depending on the voice system, use one of these three methods:

Do not confuse PTT with opening the ATC window, swapping COM frequencies or selecting the next radio. Those commands may change what you see or which radio is active, but they do not necessarily key your microphone.

Console installations are more restricted. Only controls exposed by the simulator, supported add-on or console voice system can be mapped; PC controller-mapping utilities cannot provide a console PTT binding.

How do I assign the yoke or joystick button?

The reliable method is to verify the hardware button first, then capture it in the transmitting application's active control profile.

  1. Connect the controller before launching the software. Some voice clients scan for yokes, joysticks and throttles only when they start.
  2. Confirm that the button works. On Windows, open joy.cpl, select the relevant device and watch its test display while pressing the button. If no indicator changes, solve the hardware, USB or driver problem first.
  3. Open the voice controls. Look under controls, hotkeys, input or audio for a command named Push to Talk, PTT, Transmit or Radio Transmit.
  4. Capture the physical input. Select the command and press the yoke or joystick button. Check that the application records both the correct device and button, not merely a generic button number.
  5. Apply the active profile. Save or apply the change if the application offers that option. Profiles may be specific to a controller, aircraft or voice configuration.
  6. Test press and release. Use the application's microphone test or transmit indicator. It should activate immediately when pressed and stop immediately when released.

Microsoft Flight Simulator controller presets and external voice-client profiles remain separate. If the button also needs an in-simulator command, follow our instructions for selecting the correct MSFS controller and removing duplicate assignments. In MSFS 2020, using separate joystick profiles for different aircraft can stop the microphone button inheriting an unwanted cockpit command.

Which button should I use for push-to-talk?

Choose a momentary button you can hold without changing your grip or disturbing a flight control. A yoke thumb button or an easy-to-reach joystick thumb or little-finger button usually works better than a hat switch.

  • Avoid buttons already assigned to trim, brakes, weapons, view movement or autopilot disconnect.
  • Do not use a maintained toggle switch unless the voice software explicitly supports toggle-to-talk. PTT is normally a hold-to-transmit command.
  • Avoid any button you press accidentally while rotating the yoke or applying full control deflection.
  • If the client provides separate transmit commands for COM1 and COM2, two distinct buttons can be useful. If it transmits through whichever radio is selected, one PTT button is enough.

The simulator may permit the same physical button to remain assigned to another command, but that is rarely desirable. Every radio call could otherwise operate a cockpit control at the same time.

Why is my push-to-talk button not detected?

A missing or unreliable PTT input usually comes from the wrong USB device, an unsupported binding type, a duplicate assignment or a background-focus problem.

  • The button is absent from the voice client: verify it in joy.cpl, connect the controller before starting the client and restart the client after reconnecting USB hardware.
  • The wrong device is selected: a yoke, throttle quadrant and rudder pedals can appear as separate USB human-interface devices. Select the device on which the button physically resides.
  • The client accepts keyboard input only: use the controller manufacturer's profiling software or a controller mapper to emit an otherwise unused key. Bind both the press and release correctly, without repeating or macro behaviour.
  • PTT works on the desktop but not in the simulator: keep the simulator, mapper and voice client at the same Windows privilege level. If keyboard emulation is used, enable background hotkeys where the client provides that option.
  • The aircraft reacts during every transmission: remove the duplicate simulator assignment from the active controller and aircraft profile.
  • The transmitter remains keyed: change a toggle binding to hold-to-talk, disable key repeat and confirm that voice activation is not also enabled.
  • The indicator appears but nobody hears you: check the selected microphone, mute state, input level, client connection, tuned frequency and active transmit radio. PTT gates the microphone; it does not automatically tune or select the correct radio.

Finish by holding the button for several seconds, speaking into the microphone and releasing it while watching the transmit indicator. A correct setup shows audio input only during the press and returns immediately to receive mode on release.
