Can a yoke and joystick work together in a flight simulator?

Yes. General-purpose PC flight simulators such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and FSX can read a USB yoke and joystick at the same time. Use separate aircraft profiles or assign different functions, because duplicate pitch and roll axes can cause jumping, drifting or competing control inputs.

How do you use a yoke and joystick without conflicts?

The reliable method is to remove overlapping axes before flying. A mistake we see constantly is leaving pitch and roll assigned to the yoke, joystick and sometimes a gamepad as well.

  1. Connect both devices before launching the simulator. Confirm that each appears as a separate controller. If one is missing or behaving erratically, follow our Windows controller detection and input checks before changing simulator settings.
  2. Create or duplicate controller profiles. Use descriptive names such as Yoke - GA and Joystick - Airbus. Where per-aircraft profiles are supported, associate each profile with the appropriate aircraft.
  3. Clear duplicate flight-control axes. Search every connected device for Pitch Axis, Roll Axis, Elevator Axis and Ailerons Axis. Keep these assignments only on the controller intended to fly that aircraft.
  4. Check secondary axes. A joystick throttle slider can conflict with a yoke-mounted throttle quadrant. Rudder, toe brakes, propeller, mixture, spoilers and tiller assignments can be duplicated too.
  5. Test from an external or cockpit view. Move one control at a time and watch the virtual yoke, stick, pedals and throttle. They should remain still when both physical controllers are centred.

What should each controller be assigned?

Assign pitch and roll to only the controller being used for primary flight control, then give the other device non-conflicting jobs.

A joystick twist grip can operate rudder or, where the aircraft and simulator provide one, a separate nosewheel tiller axis. Do not bind twist to rudder if pedals already control that axis unless you deliberately want an alternative profile.

Can both controllers operate pitch and roll?

Both can be assigned to pitch and roll, but this is rarely a stable local setup. Most simulators treat them as two input sources for the same virtual control rather than as independent pilot and co-pilot controls.

Moving either device may move the aircraft, but a small signal from the other can overwrite or compete with that movement. Some simulators warn about duplicate axes; others accept them and expose the problem only when the aircraft starts drifting or the controls snap between positions.

For a handover between two local users, disable one controller's axes or change profiles first. A genuine two-seat arrangement requires simulator-specific shared-cockpit support or purpose-built linked controls; two ordinary USB controllers do not create independent left and right control columns.

Why do the controls move by themselves?

Uncommanded movement usually comes from a duplicate assignment, axis noise or an uncentred controller. Increase the dead zone only after confirming that the correct device is assigned.

  • Control snaps back: another pitch or roll axis is sending a centred value after the active controller moves.
  • Slow drift: an ageing potentiometer or poorly centred axis is producing small inputs. Calibrate the device and apply the smallest useful dead zone.
  • Full deflection: an axis may be reversed, mapped to the wrong command or interpreted as a button rather than an analogue axis.
  • Throttle will not stay set: both the yoke quadrant and joystick slider are assigned to throttle.
  • Problem returns after changing aircraft: the simulator loaded a different controller profile or a global assignment remained active.

Keeping both controllers connected

On PC, both devices can normally remain plugged in permanently. Connect them before starting older simulators or hardware utilities, because some detect controllers only at launch or may change device ordering after hot-plugging.

On Xbox or PlayStation, simultaneous use depends on the simulator and on each peripheral being supported by that console; having a USB connector alone does not guarantee compatibility. On any platform, keep a keyboard, gamepad or unused controller clear of duplicate flight axes unless it is part of the intended profile.
