Learn what an ATC expedite climb instruction requires, the correct readback, how to fly it safely, and when to tell the controller “unable”.
An ATC instruction to “expedite climb” means begin climbing without delay and use the best practical rate of climb within the aircraft’s limitations and your operating procedures. Read back the cleared altitude and expedite requirement, comply promptly, and say “unable” immediately if performance, weather or safety prevents compliance.
What does “expedite climb” require?
In Aviation & Real-World Flying, expedite calls for prompt action and the highest sensible climb performance available without an exceptional or unsafe handling change. ATC usually needs the aircraft through an altitude quickly for traffic separation, although the controller may not always state the reason.
The scope depends on the exact wording:
- “Expedite climb to 12,000 feet” means maintain an expedited climb until reaching the cleared altitude.
- “Expedite through 8,000 feet” means expedite until passing 8,000 feet, then continue towards the cleared altitude using a normal climb profile.
- “Climb and maintain 12,000 feet” without the word expedite requires normal, timely compliance rather than maximum practical climb performance.

How should you read back an expedite climb?
Read back both the cleared altitude and the part of the climb that must be expedited, followed by your callsign. Mirroring the controller’s wording reduces the chance of climbing to the wrong level or ending the expedited segment too early.
ATC: N123AB, climb and maintain one two thousand, expedite through eight thousand.
Pilot: Climb and maintain one two thousand, expedite through eight thousand, N123AB.
A bare Roger does not confirm which altitude you understood. If any part of the clearance is unclear, request clarification before acting on an assumption.
How do you fly an expedited climb safely?
The aim is the best rate your aircraft can safely and predictably deliver, not an arbitrary vertical-speed figure.
- Act without unnecessary delay: select the appropriate climb mode or establish the climb manually as soon as the clearance is understood.
- Set approved climb power or thrust: use the aircraft handbook, flight manual or operator procedure. Expedite is not permission to exceed engine temperature, torque, thrust or time limits.
- Fly an appropriate climb speed: in a light piston aircraft, this may be close to the published
VYfor the conditions. In a turbine aircraft, use the approved climb mode and speed schedule rather than inventing a target. Premature retraction can cost more performance than it gains.

A common error is selecting an aggressive vertical speed on the autopilot and then watching the airspeed decay as climb performance falls. Vertical-speed mode commands a rate; it does not guarantee enough energy to sustain that rate. Reduce the selected rate or use the aircraft’s normal climb mode before low-speed protection or a stall warning becomes involved.
Should you slow down to climb faster?
You should slow only when the aircraft’s approved procedure supports it and no active speed instruction prevents it. For a typical propeller aircraft, VY provides the greatest altitude gain per unit of time, while VX is for greatest altitude gain per unit of distance and is not normally the answer to an ATC expedite request.
In an airliner, a slower speed may improve instantaneous climb rate, but changing speed also changes energy management and may conflict with an assigned speed. If ATC has assigned 250 knots and you need a lower speed to expedite, request relief rather than silently disregarding the restriction:
Unable to expedite while maintaining two five zero knots; request two two zero, N123AB.
Does expedite cancel speed or altitude restrictions?
The word expedite by itself cancels no other restriction. Continue to observe active speed assignments, legal speed limits, aircraft limitations, terrain requirements and any procedural constraints that remain applicable.
Rules governing whether a separate climb clearance cancels published SID or STAR altitude restrictions vary by jurisdiction and by the controller’s exact phraseology. If the expedited climb appears to conflict with a restriction, identify the conflict and ask ATC to clarify rather than guessing.
What should you say if you cannot expedite?
Say Unable immediately and, when useful, give a short reason or the climb performance you can provide. ATC cannot see your turbulence level, icing, engine margins, weight or remaining climb capability.

Do not accept the instruction and then continue at a normal rate without explanation. The controller may stop another aircraft’s climb, issue a turn or provide a different altitude once informed.
A collision-avoidance system resolution advisory takes priority over an ATC climb instruction. Follow the advisory and notify ATC as soon as workload permits.
What happens after the expedited altitude?
After passing the stated expedite point, continue towards the cleared altitude using the normal climb profile. Do not level at the intermediate altitude unless ATC explicitly told you to do so.
If the entire climb was expedited, maintain the best practical rate until approaching the assigned level. Start the level-off early enough to avoid an altitude bust; a high vertical speed requires more anticipation. A passing-altitude report is unnecessary unless ATC requests one or local procedure requires it.
How should you handle expedite climb in a flight simulator?
Use the same readback and aircraft-management principles when flying with realistic simulator ATC. Human controllers expect prompt compliance or an honest Unable, while some built-in ATC systems may treat expedite as phraseology without accurately judging the aircraft’s available performance.
If simulator ATC demands an impossible rate, protect the aircraft first. Do not stall, overspeed or exceed engine limits merely to satisfy the software; provide the best safe climb the model can achieve and revise the autopilot mode if airspeed begins to decay.
