Fix the V key not working in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition. Restore Capture Screenshot, find BMP files, and repair focus or Standard.xml faults.
In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, V is the default Capture Screenshot key. If V is not working, first click the main flight window, restore its assignment under Controls > Buttons/Keys, and then check the Flight Simulator X Files folder: FSX can save BMP images without an obvious confirmation, so the key may already work.
V not working in FSX (“V não dá”): how do I restore the shortcut?
Restore the single Capture Screenshot mapping before resetting all your controls.
- Open the Controls window. From the main screen, select Settings and then Controls. During a flight, use Options > Settings > Controls; press Alt first if the menu bar is hidden.
- Select Buttons/Keys. Choose the keyboard if your installation displays a controller selector.
- Find Capture Screenshot. Locate that event in the command list and inspect its assignment.
- Assign the bare V key. Select Change Assignment, press V without Ctrl, Shift or Alt, and confirm the change.
- Resolve any conflict. If FSX reports that V is assigned elsewhere, replace that mapping or give Capture Screenshot a different unused key for testing.
- Apply and test. Return to the main aircraft view, click inside the FSX window and press V once.

Where does FSX save screenshots taken with V?
FSX normally writes V-key screenshots as BMP files in the Flight Simulator X Files folder inside your Windows Pictures folder. On an unredirected profile, the usual path is %USERPROFILE%\Pictures\Flight Simulator X Files.
Older Windows versions may display Pictures as My Pictures. If OneDrive or an administrator has redirected the Pictures folder, open Pictures through File Explorer rather than relying on the default path, then sort the files by modification time. Did FSX capture the image without showing a message?
The quickest check is to press V once, open Flight Simulator X Files and look for a newly modified BMP image. If a new file appears, the shortcut is working even if FSX gave no obvious on-screen confirmation.
If the folder contains old captures but no new one, check that your Windows account can create files there. Windows security protection or folder redirection can block an older application from writing to Pictures; review any Windows notification rather than disabling protection outright.
Does V work in FSX: Steam Edition?
Yes. FSX: Steam Edition retains the native V screenshot command, while F12 normally belongs to the separate Steam overlay screenshot system.

If F12 works but V does not, repair the FSX assignment. If V works but F12 is not working in Steam Edition, check the overlay settings instead. Disabling the Steam overlay should not disable FSX's native V command.
Why does V still do nothing after reassignment?
If Capture Screenshot is assigned correctly, the remaining causes are usually window focus, a physical or intercepted keypress, an add-on panel, or a blocked save location.
- FSX does not have keyboard focus: Close open dialogues, click the main aircraft view and try again. A text box, undocked panel or another application can receive the keystroke instead.
- The wrong key combination is being used: Press V by itself. Ctrl+V, Shift+V and Alt+V are separate inputs.
- The V key is faulty: Type V repeatedly in a text editor. If characters are missed there as well, test another keyboard.
- Another program intercepts V: Temporarily close keyboard-macro, overlay and controller-profile software that assigns V as a global shortcut.
- The screenshot command works on another key: Temporarily assign Capture Screenshot to an unused key. If that key works, the screenshot command and save folder are sound; the fault is specific to V or software intercepting it.
- Only one add-on aircraft is affected: Load a default FSX aircraft and test V from the same view. If it works there, avoid rebuilding the entire controls profile and follow our checks for add-on panels and systems that capture keyboard shortcuts.
What if FSX forgets the V assignment after restarting?
An assignment that disappears after every restart usually means FSX cannot update its controls profile or the profile is damaged.
The relevant file is normally Standard.xml under %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX\Controls. FSX: Steam Edition can instead use %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX-SE\Controls, depending on the installation history. The active file is generally the one whose modification time changes when you save a control assignment and exit FSX normally.
- Close FSX completely. Do not modify the controls file while the simulator is running because it may overwrite your changes when it exits.
- Back up the active Standard.xml. Copy it somewhere outside the Controls folder.
- Rename the original. Use a reversible name such as
Standard.xml.bakrather than deleting it. - Launch FSX and test V. The simulator should generate a fresh default controls profile containing the Capture Screenshot assignment.
- Rebuild custom mappings carefully. Copying the damaged file back will also restore the fault, so reassign only the controls you need.
If no new Standard.xml appears, check whether the Controls folder or existing files are read-only and confirm that your Windows account can write there. Rebuilding FSX.cfg is not the correct first repair because keyboard assignments are stored in the controls profile.
