How do I fix the V key not working in FSX?

In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, V is the default Capture Screenshot key. If it seems dead, its assignment was usually removed or replaced, FSX lacks keyboard focus, or the screenshot saved silently. Reassign V under Controls > Buttons/Keys, then check your Flight Simulator X Files picture folder.

How do I restore V as the FSX screenshot shortcut?

When the V key is not working in FSX, restore only the Capture Screenshot assignment first; this preserves your other customised controls.

1. Open Controls. From the main screen, select Settings and then Controls. During a flight, use Options > Settings > Controls; press Alt first if the menu bar is hidden.
2. Open Buttons/Keys. Select the keyboard if your version displays a controller selector.
3. Find Capture Screenshot. Locate that exact event in the command list and check its assigned key.
4. Assign V. Highlight the event, choose Change Assignment, press the bare V key without Ctrl or Shift, and confirm it.
5. Remove any conflict. If FSX reports that V belongs to another command, delete that competing assignment unless you deliberately need it. Leaving both commands on V can produce inconsistent results.
6. Save and test. Select Apply or OK, return to the main flight view, click inside the FSX window and press V once.

Where does FSX save screenshots taken with V?

FSX normally saves V-key captures as BMP images in %USERPROFILE%\Pictures\Flight Simulator X Files, without displaying a prominent confirmation message.

Older Windows installations may label Pictures as My Pictures. If Windows or OneDrive redirects your Pictures folder, look in the redirected location instead and sort the files by modification time. A common mistake is assuming V failed because no notification appeared, even though the image was written successfully.

Is V the same as F12 in FSX: Steam Edition?

No. V invokes FSX's native screenshot command, while F12 normally belongs to the Steam overlay and works only when that overlay and its shortcut are enabled.

Reassigning F12 therefore does not restore V, and disabling the Steam overlay should not prevent FSX's native V command from working.

Why does V still do nothing after reassignment?

If Capture Screenshot is correctly assigned, check window focus, the physical key and software conflicts before resetting any FSX files.

• FSX lacks focus: Close open dialogues, click the main aircraft view and press V again. A text field, add-on window or another application may be receiving the keystroke.
• The wrong combination is being pressed: Use V by itself. Ctrl+V is a separate shortcut, and Shift+V can be treated as a different assignment.
• The key is faulty: Type V in a text editor. If it does not appear reliably there, the problem is the keyboard rather than FSX.
• Another utility intercepts V: Temporarily close keyboard macro, overlay or controller-profile software that uses V globally, then test FSX again.
• The image cannot be written: Check whether the Pictures folder was redirected and whether your Windows account can create files there.

What if FSX forgets the V assignment after restarting?

An assignment that vanishes after every restart usually means FSX cannot save its controls profile or that the profile is damaged.

First try Reset Defaults in the controls window only if you are prepared to rebuild your customised assignments. If that reset does not persist, close FSX and inspect %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX\Controls. Steam Edition may instead use %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX-SE\Controls, particularly when it coexists with another FSX installation; the active folder is normally the one with the recently modified Standard.xml.

1. Back up Standard.xml. Copy it somewhere safe while FSX is closed.
2. Rename the original file. Use a name such as Standard.xml.bak rather than deleting it.
3. Launch FSX again. The simulator should create a fresh default controls profile containing the V screenshot assignment.
4. Rebuild custom controls carefully. Restoring the old file also restores the fault, so reassign only the commands you need.

If a new file is not created, check whether the Controls folder or existing file is read-only or blocked from being changed. Rebuilding FSX.cfg is not the right first repair for this problem because keyboard mappings are stored in the controls profile.
