Should I use auto-rudder in FSX, and how do I enable it?

Use auto-rudder in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition if you fly with a keyboard, a basic yoke, or any controller without a practical rudder axis. It couples rudder to aileron input to simplify coordinated turns. Enable it under Settings > Realism by ticking Auto-rudder; leave it off when using properly configured rudder pedals.

How do I enable auto-rudder in FSX?

Auto-rudder is enabled through the simulator’s Realism settings and can be changed before or during a flight.

  1. Open Realism settings. From the opening screen, select Settings and then Realism. During a flight, press Alt if the menu bar is hidden, then open Options > Settings > Realism.
  2. Tick Auto-rudder. This is a separate checkbox rather than one of the flight-model realism sliders.
  3. Select OK. The change takes effect without restarting FSX or reloading the aircraft.
  4. Test the control. Apply left and right aileron while watching the rudder in an external view. The rudder should move with the roll input.

This is a simulator-wide setting, although an add-on aircraft with custom flight-control logic may respond differently from the default aircraft.

Should auto-rudder be on or off?

Turn auto-rudder on when you lack an independent, comfortable way to control yaw; turn it off when you have a working rudder axis.

What does FSX auto-rudder actually do?

FSX auto-rudder adds rudder as you apply aileron, helping keep normal turns reasonably coordinated. It is an accessibility aid, not a full simulation of the pilot’s footwork.

It does not properly handle every situation requiring independent yaw control, including:

  • Crosswind take-offs, approaches and de-crabbing before touchdown
  • Intentional slips and cross-controlled manoeuvres
  • Engine-out flight in a multi-engine aircraft
  • Strong propeller effects during take-off and climb
  • Precise aerobatics or helicopter pedal control

For those situations, use a twist axis, pedals or dedicated keyboard inputs. Auto-rudder also does not fly the turn for you; you must still command the bank and control pitch.

Does auto-rudder help with taxiing and take-off?

Auto-rudder can make basic ground steering easier in aircraft whose nosewheel or tailwheel steering follows rudder input, but it will not automatically hold the runway centreline. Steering behaviour also varies between aircraft.

Crosswind, torque and asymmetric thrust can still pull the aircraft off course. If you need deliberate left, right and centre inputs, refer to the default FSX rudder keyboard commands rather than relying entirely on aileron-linked steering.

Why is auto-rudder not working or causing unwanted yaw?

Unexpected auto-rudder behaviour usually comes from another rudder assignment, a noisy controller axis or an aircraft that uses custom control logic.

  • Check for duplicate assignments. Open Options > Settings > Controls > Control Axes and inspect every connected controller. Clear unwanted assignments to the Rudder Axis.
  • Calibrate centred axes. A twist grip or pedal axis that does not return cleanly to centre can command yaw even while auto-rudder is active. Recalibrate it and add a small null zone if necessary.
  • Confirm the checkbox was retained. Reopen Realism settings after selecting OK and verify that Auto-rudder remains ticked.
  • Test a default aircraft. If auto-rudder works there but not in a particular add-on, that aircraft may override or limit FSX’s standard assistance.
  • Allow for limited authority. Auto-rudder is designed mainly to coordinate ordinary turns. Weak runway correction or poor crosswind control does not necessarily mean it is broken.

What should I do after adding rudder pedals?

Disable auto-rudder once the pedals have a correctly calibrated Rudder Axis. Assign and test the toe-brake axes separately; our FSX pedal and toe-brake setup instructions cover the necessary assignments and common reversed-axis problem.

After calibration, test the pedals on the ground and check the slip-skid indicator in flight. Manual rudder should then provide cleaner taxiing, crosswind correction and coordinated turns than auto-rudder can supply.
