How do I enable random aircraft failures in FSX?

FSX does not have one switch that randomly picks any aircraft fault. Start a flight, open Aircraft > Failures, select the systems or components you want, and give each one an earliest and latest failure time. FSX then chooses a time within that window; an add-on is needed to randomise the failure type itself.

Set up a random timed failure in FSX

The procedure is the same in boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition. If the menu bar is hidden in full-screen mode, press Alt to reveal it.

  1. Load a flight. Choose the aircraft and conditions you want to use for the exercise.
  2. Open the Failures dialog. Select Aircraft > Failures from the menu bar.
  3. Choose a failure category. Select the relevant engine, instrument, radio, control or aircraft system from the available entries.
  4. Select the component. Make sure you choose the correct engine number or system, especially in a multi-engine aircraft.
  5. Set a time range. Activate the timed-failure option and enter the earliest and latest failure times. Do not mark the component as already failed unless you want the fault to begin immediately.
  6. Repeat if required. Configure any other components, then accept the dialog and continue the flight.

A narrow interval makes the exercise predictable; a wider interval preserves the surprise. If you give both fields the same value, the failure effectively becomes scheduled rather than randomly timed.

Does FSX randomly choose which system fails?

FSX randomises the time, not the type, of each failure you configure. If you schedule five components, FSX does not pick one of them—it schedules all five to fail within their respective windows.

Why is the scheduled failure not happening?

The usual cause is an aircraft that does not respond to FSX's standard failure variables. Complex add-on aircraft often run custom engines, electrical systems and gauges, so their own failure manager may override or ignore the built-in dialog.

  • Test with a default aircraft. Set the chosen component to fail immediately. If that works, the original add-on is probably handling the system itself.
  • Check the selected engine or component. Failing engine two while watching engine one can make the test appear unsuccessful.
  • Allow the interval to expire. A paused flight will not progress through a timed exercise normally.
  • Look for the correct symptom. A vacuum fault may show itself through unreliable gyro instruments rather than a warning message, while some failures produce no dramatic visual effect.
  • Check the aircraft's own menus. A sophisticated add-on may require failures to be enabled through its panel, configuration utility or electronic flight bag.

How do I cancel or reset an FSX failure?

Return to Aircraft > Failures, clear the configured failures or use the dialog's reset command. Repairing the underlying fault does not always restore the aircraft's previous state: an engine may still need restarting, and electrical sources, fuel valves or controls may need to be reconfigured.

Do FSX realism settings create random failures?

No. Realism options can make poor handling, excessive stress or collisions damage the aircraft, but they do not randomly select a system and schedule it to fail.
