Compare AutoOrtho vs X-Plane Map Enhancement for X-Plane 12: image quality, setup, caching, performance and which one to choose.
For most X-Plane 12 users, AutoOrtho is the better first choice because its regional-package workflow is established and predictable. X-Plane Map Enhancement is preferable when its available imagery and application-managed cache suit the area you fly. Neither has universally better visuals; source coverage, resolution, cache state and connection speed decide that.

Both products supply photographic ground textures. They do not turn the imagery itself into airports, roads, buildings or vegetation; those features still come from airport scenery and overlay packages.
Which one should you choose?
Choose AutoOrtho as the default starting point, then consider Map Enhancement if it gives better local imagery or a workflow that fits your system more comfortably.

How can you compare them fairly?
A fair comparison uses the same X-Plane 12 settings, route, overlays and nearest equivalent imagery quality.
- Enable only one streamed base mesh. Leave the same airports and overlay packages active for both tests.
- Test representative terrain. Include a city, coastline and rural or mountainous area near somewhere you regularly fly.
- Make an uncached and cached pass. The first reveals download and processing behaviour; the second shows how smoothly the tool performs once the route is cached.
- Inspect defects, not just sharpness. Look for baked-in clouds, mismatched colours, shoreline alignment, blurry patches, pauses and cache growth.
Do not declare a winner from screenshots produced with different source imagery or resolution settings. A sharper image source can also consume more bandwidth, cache space and graphics memory.
Which has better X-Plane 12 performance?
Neither tool is inherently faster on every PC because cold-cache performance is governed mainly by the imagery source, network, storage and selected texture quality.
- Regular pauses in new areas usually indicate downloads or texture processing. Put the cache on fast local storage, retain adequate free space and reduce the streaming quality if the application provides that control.
- Default or patchwork terrain usually means the streaming process or mount was not ready, or another base mesh has higher priority.
- Missing buildings and roads point to an absent, disabled or incorrectly ordered overlay package rather than bad orthophoto imagery.
- Black, repeated or low-resolution tiles can follow a failed download, provider throttling or an incomplete cache entry. Check the tool's status and X-Plane's

A mistake we see constantly is judging frame rate while one tool is fetching a new area and the other is reading a warm cache. That measures two different workloads.
Can AutoOrtho and Map Enhancement be installed together?
They can remain installed, but they should not both provide the same X-Plane 12 base-mesh tile during a comparison or normal flight.
X-Plane does not blend overlapping base meshes. The higher-priority entry in Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini wins for a given DSF tile, which can produce confusing changes at tile boundaries. Disable the unused package with SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED, keep airports and overlays above the selected ortho mesh, and place that base mesh below them.
Running both background applications also wastes memory, network capacity and cache writes without improving the displayed scenery.
Will streamed scenery work offline?
Previously cached imagery may work offline, but neither tool should be trusted for a completely uncached route without an internet connection.
