Can I use AutoOrtho with X-Plane 11?

Ian Stephens
In short

Yes—AutoOrtho can work with X-Plane 11. Find the compatible release, correct scenery order, mount steps and fixes for missing streamed terrain.

Yes. AutoOrtho can be used with X-Plane 11, provided you install a release that explicitly supports XP11, point it at the correct X-Plane folder and start its virtual scenery mount before launching the simulator. Keep airports and overlays above its base-mesh entry in scenery_packs.ini.

Which AutoOrtho version works with X-Plane 11?

AutoOrtho support for X-Plane 11 depends on the AutoOrtho release and its matching scenery format. Do not assume that a package labelled only for X-Plane 12 will work simply because you change the simulator path.

The programme build, region data and operating-system filesystem component must be compatible with one another. Our comparison of AutoOrtho compatibility and alternatives explains the release-specific distinction between X-Plane 11 and 12.

Operating-system support is a separate check. AutoOrtho relies on a virtual filesystem component, such as WinFsp on Windows or FUSE on Linux, but the exact requirement varies by build. Install only the component specified for the XP11-compatible release you are using.

How do I set up AutoOrtho in X-Plane 11?

Set up AutoOrtho as a mounted base-mesh scenery package, not as a conventional folder containing every finished image tile. The core ideas behind mounting and caching are covered in our AutoOrtho mounting and cache guide, although XP12-specific package choices should not be copied into an XP11 installation.

  1. Choose an XP11-compatible release. Confirm that both the AutoOrtho programme and its region packages support X-Plane 11.
  2. Set the simulator path. Where the application asks for the X-Plane path, select the root folder containing the X-Plane executable. Select Custom Scenery only when there is a separate scenery-path field.
  3. Install a region. Let its initial download and preparation finish, and ensure that the cache and temporary locations have enough free space.
  4. Start the virtual mount. Wait until AutoOrtho reports that the scenery is mounted, then leave the application running. Mounted scenery folders can appear unusually small because much of their content is supplied virtually.
  5. Launch X-Plane 11. Allow it to detect the new packages. If it creates or rewrites scenery_packs.ini, close the simulator before correcting the order.
  6. Test inside the installed region. Start at an airport well within its coverage rather than near a regional boundary.

Correct scenery order

AutoOrtho’s base mesh must sit below airports and overlay scenery in scenery_packs.ini. A practical top-to-bottom order is:

  • Custom airports and landmark packages
  • Airport, road, building and object overlays, including any overlay supplied with the AutoOrtho region
  • The AutoOrtho base-mesh package, often identified by a name containing autoortho
  • Alternative base meshes that should act only as a lower-priority fallback

X-Plane does not blend two full base meshes covering the same tile. If another mesh package is listed above AutoOrtho, that package can take priority and hide the streamed terrain.

Internet and cache requirements

AutoOrtho normally needs an internet connection whenever the flight reaches tiles that are not already cached. Previously used imagery may load from the cache, but the cache should not be treated as a guaranteed complete offline region.

Keep the cache on a writable local drive with adequate free space. First visits to an area can take longer because imagery must be fetched and processed before X-Plane can display it.

Why is AutoOrtho not showing in X-Plane 11?

X-Plane 11 usually shows default terrain when the virtual mount is missing, the scenery entry is disabled or another base mesh has higher priority.

  • Default ground textures: confirm that AutoOrtho was mounted before X-Plane started, the correct region is installed and its entry is not marked SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED.
  • Missing roads or buildings: check that the relevant overlay package is installed and listed above the AutoOrtho mesh.
  • Blank or incomplete imagery: verify the network connection, cache permissions and free disk space. Do not stop AutoOrtho while X-Plane is using the mounted scenery.
  • Persistent loading delays: allow the first tile download to finish and check whether security software is repeatedly scanning or blocking the trusted filesystem component.
  • No regions listed: this usually points to a path, mount or region-data problem; follow our checks for an empty AutoOrtho scenery list.

Can AutoOrtho and Ortho4XP coexist?

Yes, AutoOrtho and Ortho4XP can coexist in one X-Plane 11 installation, but only one full base mesh wins for any individual scenery tile.

ConsiderationAutoOrthoOrtho4XP
Imagery storageStreams uncached imagery and retains a cacheBuilds complete local tiles in advance
Connection during flightNeeded for uncached areasNot needed after the tile is built

Best choiceBroad coverage without prebuilding every tilePredictable offline use and direct control over each tile

Choose the active mesh per area by ordering its package above the competing mesh. If you already build local tiles, our explanation of where Ortho4XP files belong in X-Plane 11 helps prevent duplicate or conflicting scenery entries.
