What is the difference between autopilot and flight director?

In aviation and flight simulation, a flight director calculates and displays pitch and roll guidance for the pilot to follow, but does not move the controls. An autopilot uses servos to move the flight controls automatically. Both usually share selected modes, so the director shows what the autopilot is commanding.

The flight director normally receives targets from selected heading, altitude, vertical-speed, navigation or approach modes. It turns those targets into pitch and bank commands shown on the primary flight display or attitude indicator. The autopilot takes the next step. Once engaged, it drives the appropriate controls to follow those commands. Depending on the aircraft, it may control pitch and roll only, or work with additional systems such as a yaw damper, autothrottle or autothrust. How do the autopilot and flight director work together?

In an integrated flight-guidance system, the autopilot and flight director normally use the same active lateral and vertical modes.

  1. Select the target: Set the required heading, altitude, speed, course or flight-management guidance.
  2. Choose the modes: Select options such as heading, navigation, altitude hold, vertical speed or approach mode.
  3. Verify the annunciations: Check the flight-mode annunciator to see which modes are active and which are merely armed.
  4. Fly manually or engage the autopilot: With the autopilot off, move the controls to satisfy the director cues. With it engaged, monitor the aircraft as the autopilot follows them.

The flight-mode annunciator is the authoritative source. A lit button or selected value does not necessarily mean that a mode has captured. For example, an approach mode may be armed while the aircraft continues in heading and altitude hold until it intercepts the localiser and glideslope.

Can you use the flight director without autopilot?

Yes. Pilots routinely use the flight director while hand-flying departures, approaches and other procedures.

The pilot adjusts pitch and bank to centre or satisfy the command bars, depending on the display design. This provides accurate guidance without surrendering control to the autopilot. If the cues are unwanted, based on the wrong mode or distracting during visual flight, the correct response is to select the intended mode or switch the flight director off rather than blindly chase the bars.

Why does the flight director stay on after autopilot disconnect?

The flight director often remains visible because disconnecting the autopilot stops automatic control but does not necessarily cancel the selected guidance modes.

This is normal on many aircraft. The pilot can immediately continue flying the same commanded path by hand. To remove the cues, use the aircraft's flight-director control or cancel the applicable guidance mode; the exact behaviour varies by avionics design.

The reverse also varies. Many integrated systems automatically display flight-director guidance when the autopilot is engaged, while some older general-aviation autopilots can hold a heading or altitude without a conventional flight-director display. There is no universal rule that the visible flight director must be switched on before every autopilot can engage.

Common autopilot and flight-director mistakes

  • Confusing selected with active: Always read the flight-mode annunciator after pressing a mode button and again at capture.
  • Expecting the director to fly: Command bars are instructions, not control inputs. If the autopilot is disengaged, the aircraft will not follow them by itself.
  • Fighting an engaged autopilot: Do not hold opposing control pressure while troubleshooting. Disconnect it, stabilise the aircraft and then determine which mode or target was wrong.
  • Following incorrect guidance: A correctly functioning director can still command the wrong path if the pilot selected the wrong altitude, course, navigation source or mode.
  • Ignoring mode changes: Navigation capture, altitude capture and approach capture can change the aircraft's behaviour. Monitor every transition rather than watching only the command bars.

Neither system replaces mode awareness. The autopilot controls the aircraft, the flight director tells the pilot or autopilot how to control it, and the pilot remains responsible for selecting and verifying the intended path.
