McDonnell Douglas MD-80 vs MD-88: what’s the difference?

The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 is a family of rear-engined airliners: the MD-81, MD-82, MD-83, MD-87 and MD-88. The MD-88 is its last full-length variant, distinguished chiefly by a later EFIS-equipped cockpit, updated avionics and a revised cabin. It is not a separate family: every MD-88 is an MD-80.
In Aviation & Real-World Flying, the comparison is often phrased as though these were two competing aircraft types. They are not. When a timetable, photograph or simulator menu calls a plane simply an MD-80, it may be referring to the whole series or to an unidentified subvariant.

What actually changed on the McDonnell Douglas MD-88?
The MD-88 modernised the cockpit, avionics and passenger interior without creating a fundamentally new airframe.
- Flight deck: Electronic flight instrument system displays replaced much of the primary analogue presentation associated with early MD-80s. The exact navigation, flight-management and communications equipment still depended on the operator and later modifications.
- Cabin: McDonnell Douglas introduced updated interior styling, lighting, fittings and overhead-stowage arrangements. Subsequent airline refurbishments make cabin photographs poor evidence of an aircraft’s actual variant.
- Airframe: The MD-88 retained the long MD-80 fuselage, rear-mounted engines, T-tail and conventional control architecture. It was an evolution of the MD-82 and MD-83 rather than a clean-sheet design.
- Tail cone and exterior details: The later low-drag tail-cone shape is often associated with the MD-88, but similar components appeared on other MD-80s or were retrofitted during service. It is a clue, not proof.
The family itself developed from the DC-9, so certification, maintenance and simulator material may use DC-9-derived terminology alongside the familiar MD commercial names.
What is different about the MD-88 cockpit?
The MD-88 cockpit combines EFIS attitude and navigation displays with conventional controls and instruments; it is not a modern, fully screen-based flight deck.
EFIS also does not mean fly-by-wire. The MD-88 retained the MD-80 family’s conventional flight-control design, while the electronic displays changed how flight and navigation information was presented. Airline upgrades can make an older MD-82 or MD-83 cockpit look more like an MD-88, but an avionics retrofit does not change the aircraft’s certified model.
Does the MD-88 perform better than other MD-80 aircraft?
The MD-88 is not inherently the highest-performing MD-80 in every category.
Range, payload and runway performance depend on the certified weight option, fuel capacity, engine installation, temperature and operating assumptions. The MD-83 was developed particularly for longer-range work, while the MD-88’s main sales distinction was its modernised cockpit and cabin. Published figures are misleading unless they compare aircraft at equivalent payloads and conditions.
How can you identify an MD-88 plane?
The dependable way to identify an MD-88 is to confirm its documented model designation, using cockpit and exterior details only as supporting evidence.
- Check the recorded model: Use the operator’s fleet data, technical records or aircraft data plate where available. A registration tied to a reliable fleet record is stronger evidence than a photograph caption.
- Check the fuselage length: A visibly shorter body points to the MD-87. A long body does not separate the MD-88 from the MD-81, MD-82 or MD-83.
- Inspect the flight deck: The factory-style EFIS layout supports an MD-88 identification, but cockpit retrofits mean it is not conclusive by itself.
- Treat the engines and tail cone cautiously: The JT8D-219 and later tail-cone design were not exclusive to the MD-88.
- Ignore livery as proof: Paint schemes, cabin interiors and preserved-aircraft markings can be changed without altering the underlying model.
What should flight-simulation users check?
A flight-simulator add-on labelled MD-88 may be a complete aircraft, a repaint for another MD-80 model or a menu entry with no variant-specific systems.

- Read the dependency information: Determine whether the download includes its own model, panel, sounds and flight dynamics. This FS2004 MD-88 package with an included base aircraft differs from a Delta MD-88 repaint that requires an MD-83 base model.
- Inspect the underlying configuration: In FS2004 and FSX, changing

The failure pattern we see most often is a repaint installed without its required base aircraft. The result may be a missing menu entry, an invisible model or a package that loads with the wrong panel. Compatibility patches are package-specific too: an FSX fix intended for particular MD-81 and MD-88 models should not be applied blindly to every MD-80 installation.
Is “HDD MD-88” another aircraft variant?
An HDD MD-88 is not an official McDonnell Douglas model designation.
Prefixes such as HDD or HD in a download, image or package name normally identify the publisher, uploader or presentation rather than a different aeroplane. Their meaning depends on the package. Check the included base model, cockpit, flight dynamics and dependencies to establish whether it genuinely simulates an MD-88.
When should you say MD-80 or MD-88?
Use MD-80 when discussing the complete family or when the exact subvariant is unknown; use MD-88 only when that specific model has been confirmed.
- MD-80: Correct for the series collectively and for broad discussions of its rear-engined layout, systems or operating history.
- MD-88: Correct for the final family variant with the full-length fuselage, factory-era EFIS cockpit and revised passenger interior.
- Generic simulator or fleet labels: Treat “MD-80” as incomplete identification until the underlying MD-81, MD-82, MD-83, MD-87 or MD-88 model is known.
