McDonnell Douglas MD-80 vs MD-88: what's different?

The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 is a family of twin-engined jet airliners comprising the MD-81, MD-82, MD-83, MD-87 and MD-88. The MD-88 is the final, full-length member of that family, distinguished mainly by its later flight deck and revised cabin rather than by a fundamentally different airframe.

In Aviation & Real-World Flying, the comparison is often phrased as though these were two competing aircraft types. They are not: every MD-88 is an MD-80, but most MD-80s are not MD-88s.

What actually changed on the MD-88?

The MD-88's principal improvements were in its cockpit, systems and passenger interior rather than its basic fuselage design.

  • Flight deck: The factory MD-88 configuration used electronic flight instrument system displays and updated avionics in place of the more analogue presentation associated with early MD-80s. EFIS does not mean fly-by-wire; the aircraft retained conventional flight controls.
  • Cabin: McDonnell Douglas introduced updated interior trim, fittings and stowage arrangements. Airline refurbishments later blurred this distinction, so cabin photographs are not reliable identification evidence.
  • Airframe: The MD-88 remained closely related to the full-length MD-82 and MD-83. Its rear-mounted engines, T-tail and rear airstair were family features, not unique MD-88 equipment.
  • Tail cone: The flatter, drag-reducing tail-cone style is commonly associated with the MD-88, but similar parts appeared on other variants and could be retrofitted. It is a clue, not proof.

The MD-80 line itself developed from the DC-9, which is why certification or maintenance records can contain DC-9-derived terminology alongside the better-known MD commercial names.

Does the MD-88 perform better than other MD-80s?

No single performance ranking works across the family. Range, payload and take-off performance depend on the exact engine installation, fuel capacity, weight option and airline configuration; the higher number in MD-88 does not automatically mean greater range or power.

The MD-83, for example, was developed with longer-range operation in mind, while the MD-88's sales distinction centred more heavily on flight-deck and cabin modernisation. Comparing published figures without matching payload and operating assumptions is a common source of misleading claims.

How can you identify an MD-88?

The reliable way to identify an MD-88 is through its documented model designation, supported by cockpit details rather than exterior appearance alone.

  1. Check the official model: Use the aircraft data plate, operator fleet record or technical documentation. An avionics upgrade does not legally turn an MD-82 or MD-83 into an MD-88.
  2. Check the fuselage length: A short fuselage identifies the MD-87, but the long body cannot by itself separate an MD-88 from the MD-81, MD-82 or MD-83.
  3. Inspect the flight deck: The later electronic-display layout supports an MD-88 identification. Retrofits mean it should still be checked against the aircraft's records.
  4. Treat exterior details cautiously: Tail cones, aerials, engine nacelles and cabin fittings changed during service. A rear airstair or flat tail cone alone is not conclusive.

What should flight-simulation users check?

A livery labelled MD-88 may still be using an MD-82 visual model, cockpit and flight dynamics. That can be acceptable for a lightweight repaint, but it is not a systems-accurate MD-88 conversion.

In FS2004 and FSX, changing only the title and texture entries in aircraft.cfg changes the selectable aircraft and paint scheme. The selected model=, panel= and sim= entries, together with the underlying aircraft data, determine what is actually being flown.

  • MD-80: Correct for discussing the series collectively, including its common rear-engined layout and operating history.
  • MD-88: Correct for the final full-length variant with its factory-era EFIS cockpit and revised interior.
  • Generic fleet labels: An airline, timetable or simulator menu may say MD-80 without identifying whether the aircraft is an MD-82, MD-83 or MD-88. Check the underlying model before drawing technical conclusions.
