When should I begin descent after an ATC clearance?

In real-world aviation, begin descent promptly after acknowledging an ATC descent clearance unless the controller says “when ready”, “at pilot’s discretion”, or specifies a later point or crossing restriction. “Descend to 6,000 feet” authorises descent now; it does not demand a dive, but delaying without advising ATC can interfere with separation.

How soon is “promptly” after a descent clearance?

Promptly means after a correct readback and the necessary cockpit checks, without an unexplained level segment. There is no universal number of seconds: ATC expects a normal descent appropriate to the aircraft, conditions and clearance rather than an abrupt pitch-down.

  1. Confirm the clearance: identify the cleared altitude or flight level, any crossing restriction, the relevant altimeter setting and whether the instruction applies to your callsign.
  2. Read it back: include the cleared level and restrictions. Resolve any incorrect readback or ambiguous wording before leaving your existing altitude.
  3. Set the cleared altitude: do not dial a lower STAR altitude merely because it appears in the flight management system. The selected value must not take the aircraft below its clearance limit.
  4. Command the descent: select or arm the appropriate vertical mode and verify that the aircraft actually starts down. On many autopilot systems, setting a lower altitude alone does not initiate descent.
  5. Monitor compliance: check the descent indication, rate, speed and predicted altitude at any restricted fix. Advise ATC immediately if the aircraft cannot comply.

An instruction to “expedite descent” carries greater urgency and calls for the maximum practical rate within aircraft and operating limits. It never justifies an overspeed, unstable flight path or deviation from a TCAS resolution advisory. When may a pilot delay the descent?

A pilot may delay only when the clearance wording expressly gives timing discretion or requires descent at a later point. The exact phraseology varies between jurisdictions, so query anything that is unclear.

A predicted top of descent is not permission to leave an assigned altitude. Conversely, reaching that calculated point does not allow a pilot to delay an unconditional descent clearance. ATC instructions control; the flight management system supplies planning information.

What if the descent clearance is too early or too late?

An inconvenient clearance should be clarified or renegotiated rather than accepted and then ignored. ATC may be arranging traffic separation that is not apparent from the cockpit.

An early clearance

If an unconditional descent is issued before the planned top of descent, begin descending or request permission to remain higher. Suitable calls include “request descent at pilot’s discretion” or “request to maintain flight level 350 for another ten miles”; ATC may approve or refuse the request.

A late clearance

Start a safe descent, but do not chase the profile with excessive speed or an unreasonable rate. Use drag devices only as permitted by the aircraft procedures and operating limits. If a crossing altitude cannot be met, report “unable” immediately and request an alternative, such as extended track miles, vectors or a revised restriction.

The same principle applies when no crossing fix was stated: if ATC appears to expect a descent performance the aircraft cannot provide, say so. Silence can lead the controller to assume the aircraft will reach the assigned level as planned.

Do STAR altitude restrictions still apply?

A descent clearance does not erase every published restriction in every ATC system. Some phraseology replaces intervening vertical constraints, while a procedure-based clearance such as “descend via” normally requires the applicable constraints to be flown; speed restrictions may also remain in force after a vertical amendment.

Never descend below the ATC clearance limit merely because the STAR or flight management system shows a lower altitude. Applying the rule in flight simulators

Use the same readback, altitude-selection and monitoring discipline in a flight simulator, but recognise that built-in ATC can issue a descent too late or produce an impractical profile. A mistake we see constantly is setting the cleared altitude while leaving VNAV or altitude hold engaged, then assuming the aircraft has started down.

Verify the active vertical mode and watch for a genuine descent indication. If simulated ATC leaves the aircraft too high, request a lower altitude where the software allows it; otherwise choose whether the session is testing ATC compliance or approach management.
