Beginners should start with short-haul routes in a general-purpose flight simulator. Flights of 20–60 minutes give more frequent practice at departure, navigation, approach and landing, while keeping mistakes cheap to repeat. Long-haul flying makes sense later, once aircraft setup, autopilot use, fuel planning and arrivals feel routine.

Why are short-haul routes better for beginners?

Short-haul routes teach faster because they bring the demanding phases of flight closer together. A beginner can complete several take-offs, approaches and landings in the time a long-haul flight provides only one of each.

Short does not automatically mean easy. A 20-minute jet sector between major airports can be harder than a 45-minute visual flight because there is barely time to finish the climb before preparing for descent. We recommend judging a route by workload, not distance alone.

How long should a beginner flight be?

For a first point-to-point simulator flight, aim for roughly 20–45 minutes in a light piston aircraft or 45–90 minutes in an airliner. Use estimated flying time rather than mileage, since the same distance is a short hop in a jet but a substantial trip in a trainer.

Choose a route with:

  • daylight and fair weather;
  • two airports with comfortable runway length and uncomplicated terrain;
  • a direct course or only a few waypoints;
  • enough cruise time to check position and prepare the arrival;
  • no requirement to learn a new aircraft, difficult weather and complex procedures simultaneously.

If maintaining altitude, airspeed and heading still takes all your attention, return to basic handling and circuit practice before adding point-to-point navigation.

Which aircraft and route should I choose?

Choose a familiar, forgiving aircraft and a route that lets you see mistakes developing. A sensible progression is:

  1. Fly circuits until take-off, speed control and landing no longer require constant pausing.
  2. Make a local trip using obvious roads, coastlines or towns, then return to the departure airport.
  3. Fly a short point-to-point route between two straightforward airports in good weather.

Common mistakes that make short routes harder

  • Choosing an extremely short jet sector: the descent may begin almost as soon as the aircraft reaches cruise altitude. Add distance or use a slower aircraft.
  • Starting with every realism option enabled: cold-and-dark procedures, live weather and a complex arrival can overwhelm the lesson. Add them separately.
  • Changing routes and aircraft every flight: repeating the same sector makes improvements in speed control, descent timing and landing accuracy much easier to recognise.
  • Preparing the arrival too late: review the runway, approach and target altitudes before beginning descent, not after the aircraft is already high and fast.

When should I try a long-haul flight?

Move to long haul when you can complete shorter sectors reliably and still have spare attention for systems monitoring and planning. You should be able to configure the aircraft, follow the route, use the autopilot, calculate or verify fuel, prepare the descent and recover when automation behaves unexpectedly.

Long-haul cruise is often less demanding moment to moment, but it is unforgiving of poor preparation. A route, fuel or arrival error discovered after several hours wastes far more time than the same mistake on a short sector. If you intend to save and resume, test that function first because some complex aircraft do not restore every switch, computer entry or automation mode correctly.

Beginners interested mainly in airline systems can try long haul earlier, but a moderate 60–90-minute sector remains the better first exercise.
