To find real-world routes for a flight simulator, start with an airline timetable, airport departure board or flight-tracking service, then note the flight number, date, airports and aircraft type. Use current charts or a route-planning tool to rebuild the filed route, and adjust procedures for your simulator’s navdata.

For general flight simulation in Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D or FSX, distinguish between a scheduled flight, its filed IFR route and the track it actually flew. Those are related, but they are rarely identical.

Where can I find real airline routes and flights?

The most useful sources are airline schedules for finding a flight and flight-tracking records for finding what that flight actually did. No single source reliably provides the schedule, operating aircraft, filed route and flown track together.

Search using the flight number, airport pair and a specific date. The date matters because one flight number can operate with different aircraft, schedules or routings, and some numbers cover more than one leg.

What if I want a historical or unusual flight?

For a historical flight, prioritise a period timetable and the correct airline, airports and aircraft over compatibility with modern procedures. If an old airway or fix is absent from your simulator, substitute a valid modern segment rather than creating a waypoint with a guessed position.

Cargo, charter, positioning and government flights may not have a stable public timetable. An airport movement record can confirm that the flight operated, but the complete route may still require a plausible reconstruction.

How do I turn a real flight into a simulator flight plan?

A real flight becomes a usable simulator route only after you separate fixed facts—airports, date, flight number and aircraft—from changeable details such as runway, SID, STAR and ATC shortcuts.

  1. Choose the flight and date. Record the departure and destination, scheduled local time, operating airline and flight number. Watch for overnight services where the arrival falls on the next local date.
  2. Convert the identifiers. Passenger schedules commonly use three-letter IATA airport codes, while flight planners and avionics generally expect four-letter ICAO identifiers. A marketing flight number may also differ from the operating carrier’s callsign.
  3. Confirm the aircraft. Use the actual aircraft for that date when the information is available. Otherwise, match the aircraft family rather than rejecting the flight because the exact sub-variant or registration is missing from your simulator.
  4. Capture the en-route section. If a filed route is available, copy its fixes and airways carefully. Do not enter DCT as a waypoint; it means fly directly to the next named fix.

  6. Select the runway and procedures. Choose the SID, STAR and approach from the expected runway and weather rather than blindly copying another day’s flight. Real airlines can receive a different runway, transition or direct clearance at short notice.

How closely should I copy the real flight?

For most simmers, matching the city pair, airline, flight number, approximate time and aircraft family is authentic enough; the precise airway string is optional.

  • Schedule-authentic: Use the correct service, approximate departure time and aircraft family, then generate a valid route. This is the best default for routine airline flying.
  • Filed-route authentic: Reproduce the route filed on a particular date. Choose this only when you have the route record and sufficiently compatible navigation data.
  • Track recreation: Follow the aircraft’s observed path. This may include radar vectors, holding, weather deviations and direct clearances that should not all be programmed into the FMS.

An exact track is not automatically more realistic. In an offline simulator without the same weather and ATC instructions, a valid filed route with procedures appropriate to your conditions is usually the better recreation.

Why does the real route not work in my simulator?

A copied real-world route usually fails because its navdata cycle, procedure names or runway assumptions do not match the simulator.

  • Waypoint or airway not found: The real route uses newer, renamed or withdrawn navigation data. Rebuild that segment with fixes available in the aircraft’s database.
  • SID or STAR will not connect: The selected procedure transition does not join the first or last en-route fix. Choose the matching transition or insert a valid direct leg.
  • Route discontinuity: Some discontinuities are intentional because ATC would provide vectors. Do not clear every discontinuity until you have checked what should connect on the chart.
  • Planner and aircraft disagree: The simulator planner and add-on avionics may use different databases. Treat the aircraft’s active database as authoritative for what its FMS can accept.
  • Wrong runway or approach: The recorded flight operated under different winds, traffic flow or restrictions. Keep the en-route route, but select procedures suitable for your simulated conditions.
  • Aircraft does not match the timetable: Timetables show planned equipment, not guaranteed equipment. Use the tracked type for the chosen date or a sensible aircraft from the same family.

Older simulators such as FSX are especially likely to reject modern fixes and procedures unless their navigation data has been updated. When exact compatibility is impossible, preserve the real flight’s schedule and broad routing, then use a valid route that the installed avionics can actually fly.
