Reduce jagged edges and aliasing in FSX with the right anti-aliasing, resolution, anisotropic filtering and GPU driver settings.
To reduce jagged edges in FSX, run the simulator at your display’s native resolution, enable Anti-Aliasing in Display settings, and select Anisotropic filtering. Start with FSX controlling anti-aliasing; only create a graphics-driver profile for fsx.exe if the built-in option is ineffective. Avoid post-process AA if it blurs cockpit text.
Which FSX settings reduce jagged edges?
Native resolution and FSX’s built-in Anti-Aliasing option are the correct baseline for smoothing aircraft, building and horizon edges.
- Select native resolution: on the Settings screen, choose Customize and open the Graphics options. In full-screen mode, set Full Screen Resolution to your monitor’s native pixel dimensions. In windowed mode, avoid stretching a small FSX window across the display.
- Enable Anti-Aliasing: tick the Anti-Aliasing checkbox. This is the main FSX control for smoothing polygon edges in both the boxed simulator and FSX: Steam Edition.
- Choose Anisotropic filtering: set Filtering to Anisotropic. This sharpens runway markings and ground textures viewed at shallow angles, although it does not directly smooth an aircraft’s outline.
- Check the result outside the cockpit: inspect a wingtip, tail, terminal roof and the horizon. Thin diagonal lines reveal aliasing more clearly than large curved surfaces.
Raising Global Texture Resolution will not remove stair-stepped model edges; it changes texture detail rather than edge sampling.

Should I force anti-aliasing through the graphics driver?
A per-program graphics-driver profile is useful when FSX’s checkbox produces little visible change, but application-controlled anti-aliasing should be tried first.
- Close FSX: create or edit a profile for the
fsx.exebelonging to the installation you actually launch. - Reset conflicting overrides: begin with the driver’s application-controlled setting. Global overrides intended for other games can prevent FSX from applying its own anti-aliasing correctly.
- Enhance rather than stack: if the driver offers “Enhance the application setting”, leave FSX Anti-Aliasing enabled and start with a moderate multisample level such as 4x.
- Treat transparency separately: transparency multisampling or supersampling can calm trees, fences and other alpha-tested textures. Supersampling is much more demanding.
- Avoid blurry post-processing: NVIDIA FXAA and AMD morphological anti-aliasing can soften the whole frame, including small gauge labels and menu text.
Driver control names vary by GPU and software version. Change one option at a time; combining FSX anti-aliasing, forced supersampling, transparency supersampling and post-process AA makes both faults and performance losses difficult to diagnose.
Does DX10 Preview change FSX anti-aliasing?
DX10 Preview can respond differently to driver-forced anti-aliasing, and some methods intended for FSX’s normal DX9 renderer may have no effect.
If aliasing appeared after enabling DX10 Preview, disable it, restart FSX and compare the same aircraft and viewpoint. Do not change renderer solely for smoother edges, especially when using older add-ons that may have texture or display limitations under DX10 Preview.
Why do distant textures still shimmer?
Anti-aliasing smooths geometry edges but cannot fully eliminate flickering from fine textures, repeated patterns or transparent vegetation.

What if FSX anti-aliasing has no effect?
No visible change usually points to a resolution mismatch, a conflicting driver profile, post-processing software or the selected renderer.
- Confirm FSX is rendering at the monitor’s native resolution rather than scaling a lower full-screen resolution.
- Restore the
fsx.exedriver profile to application-controlled defaults, then test FSX’s checkbox again. - Temporarily disable ENB, ReShade or any other post-processing injector while testing.
- Restart FSX after changing DX10 Preview or full-screen display mode.
- As a last resort, back up and rename the active
FSX.cfgso FSX generates a clean one. Reapply your simulator settings afterwards rather than copying old graphics entries straight back.
If only one add-on aircraft or scenery package remains jagged, its model, textures or transparency materials may be the limiting factor. Global anti-aliasing cannot completely repair poorly prepared source assets.
How can I reduce aliasing without losing FPS?
Keep native resolution and anisotropic filtering, then reduce expensive supersampling options before weakening ordinary multisample anti-aliasing.
- Turn off transparency supersampling first.
- Reduce driver-forced AA from an extreme level to a moderate multisample setting.
- Disable GPU downsampling if FSX is rendering above the monitor’s native resolution.
- Retain anisotropic filtering unless testing shows a measurable problem on older hardware.
FSX is often limited by processor workload, so ordinary anti-aliasing may cost fewer frames than expected; supersampling and very high resolutions are more likely to expose a graphics-card limit.
