Which FSX settings reduce jagged edges?

Native resolution and FSX’s built-in Anti-Aliasing option provide the correct starting point for smoothing aircraft, buildings, taxiway lines and the horizon.

  1. Select the native resolution: open FSX’s display customisation screen and choose your monitor’s native pixel dimensions under Full Screen Resolution. In windowed mode, avoid rendering a small window and stretching it across the display.
  2. Enable Anti-Aliasing: tick the Anti-Aliasing checkbox. FSX does not expose detailed sampling levels here; the simulator and graphics driver determine the implementation.
  3. Choose Anisotropic filtering: set Filtering to Anisotropic. This keeps runway markings and terrain textures clearer at shallow viewing angles, but it does not directly smooth an aircraft’s outline.
  4. Apply the settings and compare a fixed view: inspect a wingtip, tail, terminal roof and the horizon from the same camera position. Thin diagonal lines expose aliasing more clearly than broad curved surfaces.
  5. Change one control at a time: do not enable driver overrides, supersampling and post-process AA simultaneously. You will not know which setting fixed the edge or caused the performance loss.

A mistake we see constantly is raising Global Texture Resolution to cure stair-stepped outlines. That setting affects texture detail; it cannot add samples to the edge of a 3D model.

Should anti-aliasing be on or off in FSX?

Anti-aliasing should normally be on in FSX because it removes visible stair-stepping with less image blur than post-process methods such as FXAA or morphological AA.

  • Keep the FSX Anti-Aliasing checkbox on when the simulator is controlling AA.
  • Turn it off temporarily when testing a true driver override, then compare it with application-controlled and enhanced modes.
  • Do not assume every AA control performs the same task. Multisample AA targets polygon edges, while post-process AA analyses the finished image and may soften text.
  • Leave AA off only if it causes a confirmed fault or unacceptable performance that cannot be solved with a less demanding level.

Should I force anti-aliasing through the graphics driver?

A per-application driver profile is useful when FSX’s checkbox makes no visible difference, but application-controlled anti-aliasing should be tested first.

  1. Close FSX: driver-profile changes are easier to evaluate after restarting the simulator.
  2. Select the correct executable: create a profile for the fsx.exe belonging to the installation you actually launch. This matters on systems retaining both boxed FSX and Steam Edition files.
  3. Reset conflicting overrides: begin with application-controlled settings. A global override created for another game can interfere with FSX.
  4. Try enhancement before an aggressive override: if the driver offers an option to enhance the application setting, leave FSX Anti-Aliasing enabled and begin with a moderate multisample level.
  5. Test the same scene: compare the aircraft outline, vegetation, cockpit labels and frame-rate behaviour before raising the sampling level.

Driver terminology and support vary between GPU generations. Old compatibility-bit recipes and profile-tool values may work only with a particular driver and FSX’s DX9 renderer; they are not universal fixes. What does anti-aliasing transparency do?

Transparency anti-aliasing targets alpha-tested details such as trees, fences and some fine aircraft textures rather than ordinary glass windows or the solid edge of a model.

Transparency multisampling is the lower-cost option but may make only a modest difference. Transparency supersampling usually controls crawling vegetation more effectively, at a much higher GPU cost. Start without it, add multisampling if available, and reserve supersampling for systems that retain adequate performance.

Some drivers and rendering paths ignore transparency-AA requests. If changing the setting produces no visible difference in a scene containing trees or fences, restore the default rather than stacking higher levels.

Should AMD morphological anti-aliasing be on or off?

AMD morphological anti-aliasing should normally be off for FSX because it processes the whole completed frame and can blur gauges, cockpit labels, menus and fine scenery detail.

It is a fallback rather than a quality upgrade over working multisample AA. Turn it on only when ordinary anti-aliasing is unavailable or ineffective and you prefer smoother outlines despite the softer image. NVIDIA FXAA has a similar drawback and should usually remain disabled for the same reason.

Is MISM-430 an FSX anti-aliasing setting?

No. MISM-430, also searched as MISM 430, is not an anti-aliasing option exposed by FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, and there is no standard FSX.cfg entry by that name.

Do not add it to the configuration file. If the label came from a monitor, driver database or third-party preset, identify its source before changing anything; the label alone does not correspond to a recognised FSX AA mode.

Why are cockpit controls or textures blurry after enabling anti-aliasing?

Anti-aliasing usually makes cockpit controls blurry when FXAA, morphological AA or another post-process filter is softening the entire image rather than sampling only model edges.

Disable those methods first while retaining FSX’s Anti-Aliasing checkbox. If the whole simulator still looks soft, confirm that it is rendering at native resolution and is not being enlarged by the monitor, Windows or a capture utility.

Blurry ground textures are a different problem. Use Anisotropic filtering for surfaces viewed at an angle, while remembering that distant mipmaps are intentionally less detailed to prevent flicker. Does ENB anti-aliasing help FSX?

ENB anti-aliasing may smooth the final image, but it can also make FSX gauges, menus and texture detail visibly softer.

ENB builds and presets do not all expose the same controls, so there is no universal ENB setting we can safely prescribe. Disable ENB or its anti-aliasing component while establishing the native-resolution and FSX-AA baseline. Re-enable it afterwards only if it adds a clear benefit without blurring cockpit text.

Do not stack ENB anti-aliasing, driver FXAA or morphological AA and forced multisampling during diagnosis. If an ENB preset provides only colour, contrast or bloom processing and no AA control, it cannot replace FSX’s geometry anti-aliasing.

Why do distant textures still shimmer?

Distant textures still shimmer because geometry anti-aliasing cannot fully control fine texture patterns, poor mipmaps or transparent vegetation.

Anisotropic filtering improves runway and terrain clarity but can expose detail that then flickers in motion. Does DX10 Preview change FSX anti-aliasing?

DX10 Preview changes the rendering path, so driver-forced methods intended for FSX’s normal DX9 renderer may stop working or behave differently.

If jagged edges appeared after enabling DX10 Preview, disable it, restart FSX and compare the same aircraft and viewpoint. Do not change rendering paths solely to obtain smoother edges. Older aircraft and scenery can also have material or texture limitations under DX10 Preview that anti-aliasing cannot repair.

What if FSX anti-aliasing has no effect?

No visible change usually indicates a resolution mismatch, conflicting driver profile, post-processing injector or incompatible rendering path.

  1. Verify the rendered resolution: use the monitor’s native dimensions and remove any scaling or downsampling while testing.
  2. Reset the driver profile: return fsx.exe to application-controlled defaults, then enable FSX Anti-Aliasing again.
  3. Disable injectors: temporarily remove ENB, ReShade or other post-processing from the test.
  4. Compare rendering paths: if DX10 Preview is active, test the default renderer after a full simulator restart.
  5. Try default content: compare a default aircraft and airport. A fault confined to one add-on is probably in its model, textures or transparency materials.
  6. Regenerate the configuration only as a last resort: back up and rename the active FSX.cfg, then let FSX create a clean file. Boxed FSX and Steam Edition may use different roaming AppData folders, especially on a side-by-side installation, so confirm which file is active before changing it.

Reapply settings manually after generating a clean configuration. Copying old graphics entries straight back can restore the conflict you were trying to remove.

How do I reduce aliasing without losing FPS?

Keep native resolution and anisotropic filtering, then reduce transparency supersampling, downsampling and extreme driver overrides before weakening ordinary multisample anti-aliasing.

  • Disable transparency supersampling first.
  • Reduce an extreme forced-AA level to a moderate multisample setting.
  • Turn off GPU downsampling or virtual super resolution if FSX is rendering above the display’s native resolution.
  • Keep Anisotropic filtering unless testing on older hardware shows a genuine performance problem.
  • Reduce scenery, shadows or traffic only after confirming that the graphics card, rather than FSX’s processor workload, is the limiting factor.

FSX is often processor-limited, so moderate multisample AA may cost fewer frames than expected. Very high resolutions and supersampling are much more likely to create a graphics-card bottleneck, especially around dense airports or in heavy weather.
