Use these FSX cockpit and engine sound settings for a realistic mix, with slider starting points, aircraft-specific tweaks and common audio fixes.
For realistic audio in FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, we recommend starting with Cockpit at 80%, Engines at 40%, Environment at 50–60%, Voice at 65–75% and Music at 0%. Treat these as baselines: each aircraft sound package sets its own internal/external balance, so final adjustment must be made by ear.
Recommended realistic FSX sound settings
This mix is a reliable starting point for default aircraft and many freeware add-ons. FSX may not display numerical percentages, so estimate them from the slider's total travel.

The Cockpit slider is not a cockpit-view master control. It adjusts sounds assigned to that category; engine samples remain governed by the Engines slider even when seated in the virtual cockpit. The aircraft's sound.cfg determines the relative volume and character of its interior and exterior engine samples.
For a ready-made jet example, our cockpit-focused soundset with a matching baseline mix uses roughly 80% Cockpit, 40% Engines and 50–60% Environment as its suggested starting point.
How do I tune FSX audio by ear?
Use a repeatable flight and change one slider at a time; otherwise, it becomes difficult to tell which adjustment improved the mix.
- Open the Sound settings. From the main screen, open Settings and then Sound. During a flight, use the Options menu; press Alt first if the menu bar is hidden.
- Check the audio device. Enable sound and confirm that the Sound and Voice outputs point to the intended speakers or headset.
- Enter the baseline mix. Set Cockpit to about 80%, Engines to 40%, Environment to 50–60%, Voice to 65–75% and Music to zero.
- Use a familiar aircraft. Listen at idle, during take-off and in cruise. A setting judged only at full power will usually make cruise audio too quiet or too loud.
- Compare internal and external views. In a pressurised jet, engines should be restrained from the flight deck but substantially louder outside. Switch clicks, warnings and radio calls must remain intelligible without dominating the mix.
- Adjust in small increments. Move one control by roughly 5–10% of its travel, listen again under the same conditions and stop once important sounds no longer mask each other.
FSX stores these controls globally rather than as separate profiles for every aircraft. If one add-on is mixed unusually loudly, changing the global settings to suit it may spoil every other aircraft.
How should the mix change for jets and piston aircraft?
The correct engine level depends mainly on cockpit insulation and aircraft type.
- Pressurised airliners: Keep Engines around 35–45% and Cockpit around 75–85%. At cruise, airflow, fans, avionics and radio should be clear while engine noise remains present but subdued.
- Light piston aircraft: Raise Engines to roughly 50–65% and use Cockpit around 65–75%. The engine is a continuous and prominent cockpit sound because there is much less insulation.
- Turboprops: Start with Engines near 50–60%. Propeller noise should be obvious without burying warnings and ATC.
- Open-cockpit or lightly insulated aircraft: Engines may need 65–80%, with Environment around 60–75% to retain wind and airframe noise.
These figures cannot repair a poorly mixed sound package. Some add-ons also provide their own cockpit or gauge-volume controls, which should be adjusted before changing the global FSX mix.
Should cockpit and external audio be equally loud?
No. A properly configured aircraft should become markedly louder in an external view, particularly around jet engines, while retaining a filtered and insulated character inside.
The FSX Engines slider changes engine volume in both viewpoints; it cannot independently correct their relationship. If interior and exterior engines are almost equally loud, the likely cause is the aircraft's sound package or its interior/exterior definitions. Why do FSX sounds clip, disappear or ignore the sliders?
Distortion and missing sound are usually caused by the mixer, output configuration or an add-on rather than the chosen percentages alone.
- Every slider is at maximum: Loud categories mask quieter details, and aggressively mastered add-ons may distort. Restore the baseline before judging the soundset.
- The Windows speaker layout is wrong: A 5.1 output configured for stereo headphones can send speech or effects to channels that are not present. Match the Windows layout to the actual equipment.
- Audio enhancements are changing the mix: Disable virtual surround, spatial processing and Loudness Equalization while calibrating FSX. Re-enable them only after confirming that they genuinely help.
- The output device changed after launch: Older applications do not always follow a newly connected USB headset correctly. Select the device before starting FSX, or restart the simulator after changing it.
- An add-on uses custom gauge audio: Some warning, avionics or cabin sounds have separate controls and may not follow the expected FSX category slider.
- Files or aliases are missing: An incomplete
sound.cfg, absent WAV files or a broken sound alias can silence one category completely.
