Which DLSS preset is best for MSFS 2024?

Ian Stephens
In short

Find the best MSFS 2024 DLSS preset for 1080p, 1440p, 4K and VR, with practical advice on Quality, Balanced, Performance and DLAA.

Use DLSS Quality as the default preset in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Choose DLAA if you already have enough GPU headroom and want the sharpest cockpit text; Balanced for GPU-limited 4K or VR; and Performance only when resolution and frame-rate demands outweigh softness, shimmer and instrument readability.

Which DLSS mode is best at 1080p, 1440p and 4K?

For most desktop displays, start with Quality and move only one step at a time. Output resolution matters more than the RTX model name because each preset reduces the internal resolution from which MSFS reconstructs the final image.

Display or useBest starting pointWhen to change it
1080pDLAAUse Quality if DLAA is too demanding. Avoid Balanced or Performance unless frame rate is otherwise unplayable.
1440pQualityTry DLAA for better cockpit clarity when GPU headroom allows, or Balanced when clearly GPU-limited.
4KQualityBalanced is a sensible performance option. Reserve Performance for demanding aircraft, weather or high-refresh targets.
VRQualityTry Balanced if GPU frame time is too high. Performance is a last resort because displays and distant detail can become soft.

DLAA performs anti-aliasing at native resolution rather than upscaling, so it offers the best image quality in this group but saves little GPU time. Quality is the usual sweet spot. Balanced sacrifices more source detail, while Performance reconstructs 4K from roughly a 1080p image. At 1080p output, even Quality begins from roughly 720p, which explains why small cockpit lettering can suffer.

Ultra Performance is intended for exceptionally high output resolutions and is rarely a good choice for cockpit-focused flying. For the rest of the graphics menu, use our resolution-specific MSFS 2024 graphics baselines rather than lowering every setting together.

Which DLSS preset should I use in VR?

Start with Quality in VR, then test Balanced if the GPU cannot maintain a comfortable frame time. Headset resolution and runtime scaling determine the real workload, so desktop 4K recommendations do not transfer directly to VR.

Avoid reducing both the headset render scale and the DLSS preset at the same time. That compounds the loss of source detail and often makes glass displays, taxiway markings and distant traffic difficult to read. Fix one VR scale, test Quality, and then make one change at a time.

How should I choose a DLSS preset?

The correct preset is the highest-quality mode that maintains your required frame time in a repeatable, demanding flight.

  1. Set the correct output resolution. Use the display's native resolution, or establish a fixed headset render scale before testing DLSS.
  2. Begin with Quality. At 1080p, begin with DLAA if the GPU can handle it. Temporarily disable Frame Generation so you can judge the underlying performance.
  3. Check the bottleneck. Use the simulator's frame-time display to distinguish a GPU limit from a main-thread limit. If it reports the main thread, follow our main-thread troubleshooting steps instead of reducing DLSS quality.
  4. Repeat the same demanding scenario. Test a complex cockpit at a busy airport with representative weather, rather than comparing unrelated flights.
  5. Move one preset at a time. Drop from Quality to Balanced only if GPU frame time needs improvement. Move towards DLAA when performance is already sufficient.
  6. Inspect the cockpit as well as the FPS counter. Check small labels, glass displays, power lines, taxiway markings and moving aircraft for blur, shimmer or ghosting.

Why does a lower DLSS preset sometimes add no FPS?

Lowering DLSS adds little or no performance when Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is limited by the CPU, scenery preparation, traffic or content streaming. DLSS Super Resolution reduces GPU rendering work; it cannot make the simulation thread process avionics, traffic or scenery faster.

A mistake we see constantly is selecting Performance after spotting a low frame rate, without checking the limiting component. If the GPU is not the bottleneck, the result is the same frame rate with softer instruments. Reduce CPU-heavy settings or address the underlying stutter instead.

Why does DLSS make cockpit text blurry?

Cockpit text becomes blurry when the chosen DLSS preset supplies too little source detail for the output resolution. Temporal reconstruction can also leave ghosting on moving digits, windscreens, propellers and rapidly panned cockpit views.

  • Switch from Performance or Balanced to Quality.
  • Try DLAA when GPU headroom permits.
  • Confirm that the display resolution or VR render scale has not also been reduced.
  • Compare TAA if a particular glass cockpit remains difficult to read; some displays respond better to native-resolution temporal anti-aliasing.
  • Do not rely on sharpening to restore detail that was never rendered.

If fine geometry still crawls or flashes, our guide to fixing jagged edges and shimmer in MSFS 2024 compares DLAA, DLSS and TAA for that specific problem.

Does Frame Generation change which DLSS preset to use?

Frame Generation does not determine the best Super Resolution preset. Choose Quality, Balanced or DLAA from base GPU performance and image quality first; Frame Generation can then add displayed frames, but it does not repair blurry source detail or remove main-thread latency.

Judge control response and the ungenerated base frame rate rather than relying only on the higher displayed counter. The labels can become confusing because DLSS covers several separate technologies, so our DLSS 4 compatibility and mode explanation clarifies which features are distinct from the Quality, Balanced and Performance presets.
