What are the best flight simulators for MacBook Pro?

Ian Stephens
In short

Compare the best flight simulators for MacBook Pro, including X-Plane, Aerofly and FlightGear, plus Apple silicon and performance advice.

For general flight simulation on a MacBook Pro, X-Plane 12 is the best all-round choice: it runs on macOS, has convincing flight modelling and supports a deep add-on library. Aerofly FS 4 favours smooth, quick flying, while FlightGear is the strongest free and open-source alternative.

Which MacBook Pro flight simulator should you choose?

The right simulator depends on whether you value aircraft systems, performance, cost or combat flying most.

SimulatorBest forMacBook Pro strengthsMain drawback
X-Plane 12Realistic general aviation, IFR and airliner flyingApple silicon support, detailed flight model and extensive add-onsDemanding scenery, weather and complex aircraft can reduce performance
Aerofly FS 4Smooth performance and straightforward flyingQuick loading and generally good frame rates on modern MacsSmaller add-on ecosystem and less emphasis on deep airline operations
FlightGearFree and open-source simulationNo purchase required, broad aircraft selection and macOS supportAircraft quality and setup consistency vary considerably
War ThunderOnline military aviationRuns on macOS and includes a simulation-oriented battle modeMore combat game than procedural or study-level flight simulator

Why is X-Plane 12 the best overall choice?

X-Plane 12 offers the strongest combination of native Mac support, credible aircraft behaviour and long-term expandability. It suits circuits in a Cessna, instrument practice and detailed airliner operations without requiring Windows.

The simulator itself supports Apple silicon, but older third-party plug-ins may contain Intel-only code. Those plug-ins need an updated universal or Apple silicon build, or an Intel-compatible run under Rosetta. This distinction catches out many users who assume that macOS compatibility automatically means native Apple silicon compatibility.

Add-ons are a major advantage. Our X-Plane aircraft, scenery and utility library shows the range available, although each download should still be checked for simulator-version and macOS compatibility.

Which MacBook Pro specification is suitable?

An Apple silicon MacBook Pro with at least 16 GB of unified memory is the practical baseline we recommend for X-Plane 12, while additional memory gives complex aircraft, detailed airports and background applications more room.

  • Processor and graphics: The exact chip and GPU configuration matter more than the MacBook Pro name. Pro and Max-class chips generally provide more headroom for clouds, shadows and high object density.
  • Memory: Unified memory cannot be upgraded later. An 8 GB model can run lighter simulators, but memory pressure becomes a common limitation once detailed scenery and aircraft are added.
  • Storage: Simulator scenery can consume hundreds of gigabytes. A fast external SSD is suitable for extra scenery; a slow flash drive is not.
  • Display resolution: A Retina display has a high native pixel count. Running the simulator one or two resolution steps below native often produces a larger improvement than indiscriminately lowering every graphics option.

Can an Intel MacBook Pro run these simulators?

An Intel MacBook Pro can run Mac-compatible simulators, but performance depends heavily on whether it has dedicated graphics. Models relying only on integrated graphics are poorly suited to demanding X-Plane 12 scenery and weather.

A late Intel model with dedicated AMD graphics may still be usable at restrained settings. Expect more fan noise, heat and lower sustained performance than on a suitably configured Apple silicon model. X-Plane 11 can remain sensible on older hardware if it is already owned and supported by the required add-ons.

What is the best free flight simulator for MacBook Pro?

FlightGear is the best fully free MacBook Pro flight simulator because it is open source, actively developed and not restricted to a short demo.

Its aircraft range is broad, but individual models differ in cockpit depth and finish. Installation and controller setup can also require more attention than X-Plane or Aerofly. We provide a Mac-compatible FlightGear download and installation details for users who want to try it without buying a commercial simulator.

Does Microsoft Flight Simulator run on a MacBook Pro?

Microsoft Flight Simulator has no native macOS version. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 remains limited to Windows PC and Xbox, while Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is available on Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5 but not macOS.

Some Intel MacBook Pro models can install Windows through Boot Camp, provided their hardware meets the simulator's requirements. Apple silicon Macs do not support Boot Camp, and virtualising Windows is not a dependable substitute for the graphics compatibility these simulators require. Cloud streaming may work, but it is not a native installation and restricts add-ons, peripherals and offline use.

How do you improve flight simulator performance on a MacBook Pro?

The most effective fix is to reduce rendering resolution before cutting aircraft detail or accepting severe stutter.

  1. Establish a clean baseline. Test the simulator with a default aircraft, default airport and no third-party plug-ins. This separates hardware limits from add-on faults.
  2. Lower the rendering resolution. Retina-native resolution is expensive. Drop it one step, retest, then lower it again only if needed.
  3. Adjust the correct settings. Reduce anti-aliasing, shadows and cloud quality when the GPU is limiting performance. Reduce world detail, traffic and object density when the processor is the bottleneck.
  4. Watch memory pressure. If macOS begins swapping heavily, lower texture quality, close memory-hungry applications and remove scenery or plug-ins that remain loaded unnecessarily.
  5. Use mains power and clear ventilation. Battery-saving modes can restrict performance, while blocked vents reduce sustained clock speeds during longer flights.
  6. Restore add-ons individually. Add aircraft, scenery and plug-ins one at a time. A mistake we see constantly is reinstalling an entire add-on collection before identifying which component caused the slowdown or crash.

What Mac-specific problems should you expect?

Most Mac flight-simulator failures come from security controls, incompatible plug-ins or USB hardware rather than the simulator itself.

  • Blocked application or plug-in: Approve a trusted download through macOS Privacy & Security controls. Do not disable system security globally to force an unknown file to run.
  • Plug-in absent on Apple silicon: Check whether it contains an Apple silicon or universal binary. An Intel-only X-Plane plug-in cannot load while the simulator is running purely in native Apple silicon mode.
  • Joystick disconnects: Test it directly rather than through an unpowered USB-C hub. Older controllers that require abandoned driver software may not work on newer macOS releases.
  • Scenery does not appear: Confirm that the files are in the simulator's actual scenery directory, that macOS has granted storage access and, for X-Plane, that scenery order is correct.
  • Poor external-monitor performance: A larger display may drive far more pixels than the built-in panel. Test at a lower rendering resolution before reducing every other setting.

Is a MacBook Pro better than a MacBook Air for flight simulation?

A MacBook Pro is usually better for sustained simulation because active cooling and higher-end chip options help preserve performance during long flights. It is not automatically faster than every Air, however; chip generation, GPU configuration and memory still decide the result.

For lighter simulators and occasional flying, an Air may be sufficient. Our MacBook Air flight-simulator guidance explains the performance and thermal compromises in more detail.
