Best freeware airports for Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Compare the best freeware airports for Microsoft Flight Simulator, including major hubs and GA fields, with MSFS 2024 and installation advice.

The best freeware airport add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator are the community overhauls of Gatwick, Stansted, Inverness and Fort Lauderdale Executive, plus Quixadá and Crateús for regional VFR flying. Gatwick is our strongest big-hub pick; Inverness is the safest choice when you need declared compatibility with both MSFS 2020 and 2024.

We favour scenery that materially improves the default airport: custom terminals, accurate markings, better lighting and recognisable local structures. A large object count alone does not make an airport good; sensible performance, correct parking and conflict-free installation matter just as much.

Which freeware MSFS airport should you choose?

Choose Gatwick or Stansted for airline operations, Inverness for mixed regional flying, Fort Lauderdale Executive for business aviation, and the Brazilian fields for slower VFR exploration.

Do freeware airports work in MSFS 2024?

Inverness is the clear dual-version choice here because it is explicitly presented as supporting both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024. For every other package, follow the compatibility statement and installation notes supplied with that download.

An airport made for MSFS 2020 may load in MSFS 2024, but that does not guarantee correct materials, terraforming, vegetation, parking or lighting. Keep the original archive so you can restore an older release if an update introduces problems.

Downloadable Community-folder scenery is principally a PC option. Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 do not expose a Community folder for manually copied third-party packages; console users need scenery distributed through the simulator’s own content system. PlayStation support applies to MSFS 2024, as MSFS 2020 was never released on PlayStation.

How do you install freeware airport scenery?

  1. Extract the download. Do not place the ZIP or other archive directly in the Community folder.
  2. Find the actual package folder. Its root normally contains files such as manifest.json and layout.json. Extra folder nesting is one of the most common reasons scenery fails to appear.
  3. Copy that folder into the active Community folder. Its location depends on the simulator edition, installation method and any custom Packages path, so use the folder associated with your active installation rather than a path copied blindly from another PC.
  4. Remove older versions and competing scenery. Two packages covering the same ICAO can produce doubled terminals, overlapping markings or conflicting runways.
  5. Restart the simulator and inspect the airport. Check the terminal, runway alignment, parking positions and lighting before adding another package.

Why is my freeware airport missing or broken?

Most missing or malformed airports are caused by incorrect folder nesting, a duplicate package or a version mismatch rather than a faulty simulator installation.

  • The default airport still appears: confirm that the folder containing manifest.json is directly inside the active Community folder.
  • Buildings or markings are doubled: disable every other add-on covering that ICAO, then add packages back individually.
  • Textures appear pink or chequered: re-extract the archive and check whether the included instructions name a required library or dependency.
  • The runway floats or cuts into the ground: suspect incompatible terraforming or another scenery package modifying the same area.
  • The simulator crashes while loading: test the airport by itself in an otherwise empty Community folder. If it still fails, remove it and verify that the package supports your simulator version.

At large hubs, poor frame rate can also come from AI traffic, parked aircraft and airport vehicles rather than the scenery alone. Reduce those settings first; replacing a detailed airport with a generic one should be the last step.
