Which Trainz edition should Mac users buy?
Trainz Plus Standard is our default recommendation for a new Mac installation because it receives the subscription branch’s newer tools and engine changes. Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022 remains the better fit if avoiding a recurring payment matters more than receiving those additions.

The listed minimum for the Trainz Plus Mac branch is macOS 11 with Metal-capable graphics. Its desktop Mac application uses Intel code on Apple-silicon Macs and therefore requires Rosetta 2. It is an official macOS release, but “native Mac” should not be confused with a native Apple ARM executable.
TRS22’s Mac requirements reach back to macOS 10.14, subject to the exact package and storefront listing. It also relies on Rosetta 2 when installed on Apple silicon. Always treat the product page for the edition being purchased as authoritative, because similarly named standard, Platinum and subscription packages are not interchangeable.
Will TRS22 routes and DLC work in Trainz Plus?
Many TRS22 assets work in Trainz Plus, but compatibility is not automatic. A route can depend on hundreds of separate scenery, track, signalling and rolling-stock assets; missing or payware dependencies may leave it incomplete even when the route itself installs.
Do not assume that a TRS22-era route, DLC entitlement or standalone installer includes a compatible Mac package. Storefront ownership, account entitlements, asset build versions and required dependencies can all differ. Older Mac installers may also be 32-bit, which macOS Catalina and later cannot open.

Is there a free train simulator for Mac?
OpenTTD is the best genuinely free train game for Mac, but it is a transport-management simulator rather than a locomotive-driving simulator. It lets you design rail networks, signals, stations, junctions and timetables without a subscription or time-limited trial.
Simutrans is another free management option. For free cab driving, openBVE is the main alternative to investigate, although its macOS build, runtime and individual route packages require more compatibility checking than an officially packaged commercial Mac game.
A demo, free trial or introductory subscription period is not freeware. Trainz Plus is a paid subscription, while TRS22 and the other full driving simulators are paid products even if a particular storefront occasionally offers a trial.
Can I run Train Simulator 2017 on Mac?
No. Train Simulator 2017 is a legacy Windows-only release from the series now called Train Simulator Classic. It never had a native macOS edition, so a Train Simulator 2017 product key or Windows download does not provide a Mac application.
Old search results sometimes point to separate products that were labelled for Mac, including legacy Trainz releases. They are not Mac editions of Train Simulator 2017. Any such title built as a 32-bit application will not launch on macOS Catalina or later, and Rosetta 2 cannot translate 32-bit Mac software.
On an Intel Mac, installing Windows through Boot Camp may run the Windows game, subject to suitable graphics hardware and storage. Boot Camp is not available on Apple-silicon MacBooks, where virtualisation or a compatibility layer must translate the Windows and DirectX components.
Can Train Simulator Classic or Train Sim World run on Mac?
Neither Train Simulator Classic nor Train Sim World has a native macOS release. Train Simulator Classic is a Windows PC game; Train Sim World supports Windows and selected consoles rather than Mac.
A virtual machine or compatibility layer may start some releases, but this is not equivalent to official Mac support. DirectX translation, launchers, updates, DLC authentication, anti-cheat components and specialised controllers can fail independently. A mistake we see repeatedly is buying a large DLC collection before proving that the base Windows simulator works on the Mac. Test a demanding route, audio, saving, controller input and the content manager first. A menu that launches successfully does not prove that a full driving session will be reliable.
What should I check before buying a Mac train simulator?
Check the exact edition rather than relying on the game’s name or an old search result.
- Inspect the storefront platform badge: Confirm that the exact base game shows macOS support. A Windows-only package, key or DLC listing does not gain Mac support because another edition has a similar name.
- Match the minimum macOS version: Trainz Plus and TRS22 have different listed requirements. Legacy 32-bit Mac applications cannot run on macOS Catalina or later.
- Identify Intel or Apple-silicon support: Trainz’s desktop Mac editions use Rosetta 2 on Apple silicon. Do not assume that every official Mac game contains native ARM code.
- Allow storage for dependencies: Trainz routes can pull in substantial collections of scenery, track, rolling stock and textures. Keep free space beyond the base installation figure, especially on a MacBook with a smaller internal SSD.
- Check subscription and DLC entitlements: Trainz Plus Gold content is tied to the subscription, while TRS22 packages contain different permanent bundles. Content bought through one package or storefront may not transfer automatically.
- Confirm controller support: A gamepad, throttle or RailDriver recognised by macOS is not necessarily supported by the Mac build of the simulator. Keyboard and mouse are the safest baseline.
