The best choice depends on whether you want to drive a train or manage an entire transport network.

Here, “supported” means that the project or publisher provides a build for that operating system. It does not guarantee that an old release will run on every newer macOS or Linux distribution.

Which option is best for driving a train?
openBVE is the clearest cross-platform choice when you want cab controls, working signals, timetables and route-specific operating procedures on either Mac or Linux.
Its weakness is consistency: routes and trains are created by different authors, so visual quality, installation methods and control systems vary. Some older content relies on Windows-specific plug-ins, while incorrect capitalisation in an add-on’s folders or file references can cause failures on a case-sensitive Linux filesystem.

If driving is not essential, Transport Fever 2 offers a modern 3D transport network, while OpenTTD and Simutrans are lighter, free options with a greater emphasis on logistics and system design.
Can Train Simulator Classic or Train Sim World run on Mac or Linux?
Neither Train Simulator Classic nor Train Sim World has a native macOS or Linux edition.

A mistake we see constantly is treating “PC” as meaning Windows, Mac and Linux. On a game’s product page, check for an explicit macOS or Linux build rather than assuming any desktop computer is supported.
Is Proton or Wine a practical alternative?
Proton and Wine can run some Windows train simulators on Linux or macOS, but that is compatibility rather than official platform support.
On Linux, the base game may work while a launcher, video component, DLC installer or third-party utility fails. Updates can also change a previously working setup. Test the unmodified simulator before buying a large DLC collection or installing community content.
Mac compatibility layers and virtual machines face the same problems, with extra complications around graphics translation and USB controller software. Intel Macs can install Windows through Boot Camp; Apple Silicon Macs cannot use Boot Camp and must rely on virtualisation or translation instead.
What should you check before installing?
Check the requirements for the exact edition and release, not just the game series name.
- Operating-system version: older 32-bit Mac games do not launch on macOS versions that require 64-bit applications.
- Processor architecture: confirm whether the Mac build supports Apple Silicon directly or through Apple’s translation layer.
- Add-on compatibility: a cross-platform simulator can still have Windows-only routes, plug-ins or installers.
- Graphics support: make sure the required graphics API and GPU features are available on the machine.
- Controls: verify that any throttle, controller or specialist cab hardware has drivers for the operating system.
