Which train simulator games support Mac and Linux?
Native options exist for both operating systems, although the best choice depends on whether you want cab driving, route building or transport management.

“Supported” means that the developer or project provides a build for that operating system. It does not guarantee that an old release will work on every later macOS version or Linux distribution.
Transport Fever 2, OpenTTD and Simutrans include railways but are management games rather than substitutes for a cab simulator. Our recommended Mac train simulators explain that distinction and cover more macOS choices.
A mistake we see constantly is treating “PC” as meaning Windows, Mac and Linux. Check the platform symbols and requirements for the exact simulator edition, not merely the desktop launcher carrying it.
Which option is best for driving a train?
openBVE is the clearest native cross-platform choice for cab controls, working signals, timetables and route-specific procedures on either Mac or Linux.
Its community-made content varies in quality and installation method. Some older trains use Windows-specific plug-ins, while mismatched capitalisation in folder names or file references can stop an add-on loading on a case-sensitive Linux filesystem.
Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022 is the stronger Mac option for route building, rolling-stock collections and less rigid railway operations. Trainz editions differ, however, so confirm macOS and processor support for the specific release before buying add-ons. There is no official Linux edition.
If manual driving is not essential, choose Transport Fever 2 for a modern 3D network or OpenTTD and Simutrans for lighter, logistics-focused play.
Can Train Sim World run on Linux through Proton?
Train Sim World can sometimes run on Linux through Proton, but it remains a Windows game with no native Linux release or guaranteed compatibility.
The base simulator may launch while video playback, graphics performance, controller detection or downloadable content fails. A game, graphics-driver or compatibility-layer update can also disrupt a setup that previously worked.
Start with an unmodified installation and test driving, sound, video and controls before adding a large DLC collection. Install content in small batches. Third-party installers are a particular problem because they may not locate the simulator inside its Proton prefix.

Can Windows-only train simulators run on a Mac?
Train Sim World and Train Simulator Classic may run through Windows or remote streaming, but there is no universal Mac compatibility setting for either simulator.
Intel Macs
An Intel Mac that supports Boot Camp can boot into a full Windows installation. This generally provides better graphics and peripheral compatibility than a virtual machine, but it needs a Windows licence, a sizeable disk partition and hardware that meets the simulator’s Windows requirements.
Apple Silicon Macs
Apple Silicon Macs cannot use Boot Camp. Virtual machines may run Windows on Arm, but x86 translation, DirectX support, launchers and DLC create additional failure points. Performance-heavy train simulators are poor candidates unless the virtualisation software supports their required graphics features.
Streaming from a separate Windows gaming PC is often more dependable because the host runs the simulator. Specialist cab controls may need to remain attached to that host. We cover the available Mac workarounds for Train Sim World separately.
What should you check before installing?
Check the exact edition, operating-system requirements and add-ons separately before downloading a train simulator.
- Confirm native support. Do not assume that a Windows game supports Mac or Linux because its launcher does.
- Check the macOS version. Older 32-bit Mac software will not launch on macOS releases that accept only 64-bit applications.
- Verify processor compatibility. Establish whether a Mac build supports Apple Silicon directly or through Rosetta 2. Linux users should check distribution, graphics-driver and graphics-API requirements.
- Inspect add-ons separately. A working base simulator may still have Windows-only route installers, plug-ins or asset managers.
- Check controller drivers. Keyboards and standard gamepads are simpler than dedicated throttles or cab controllers with Windows-only software.
- Allow for storage growth. Route-based simulators can become far larger once scenery, rolling stock and DLC are installed.
For native cab driving on Linux, openBVE is the straightforward choice. Mac users can choose openBVE or a compatible Trainz edition. Use Proton, virtualisation and remote streaming only when you accept the extra troubleshooting and the lack of official platform support.
