The Boeing KC-46A Pegasus is a US Air Force multi-role tanker used primarily to refuel military aircraft in flight. Based on Boeing’s 767 airframe, it can also transport palletised cargo, passengers and aeromedical patients, while receiving fuel itself to extend the range and endurance of deployed forces.

How does the KC-46A refuel other aircraft?

The KC-46A supports both standard fixed-wing refuelling methods, subject to its fitted equipment and the receiver’s operational clearance.

  • Flying boom: A rigid, steerable boom connects to a receptacle on aircraft such as many US Air Force fighters, bombers and transports.
  • Probe and drogue: A hose ending in a basket accepts the receiver aircraft’s probe. The Pegasus can use centreline drogue equipment and, when fitted and approved, wing-mounted refuelling pods.
  • Air-refuellable tanker: A receptacle on the KC-46A allows another boom-equipped tanker to refuel it in flight.

Air-refuelling operators control the boom through the Remote Vision System, using cameras and displays rather than a direct rear-facing window. Readers unfamiliar with the basic sequence can see how flying-boom tanker operations transfer fuel; the KC-46A’s operator interface is substantially different.

Matching hardware does not automatically make a receiver eligible. Aircraft type, configuration, national approval, test status and operating procedures all determine whether a particular pairing is cleared.

Can the KC-46A carry cargo, passengers and patients?

Yes, but the aircraft must be configured and loaded around the requirements of the specific mission. Its main deck can accept standard military pallets, passenger seating and aeromedical equipment in approved layouts.

A mistake we see constantly is treating maximum passenger capacity, maximum cargo payload and maximum fuel offload as values available simultaneously. They are linked: extra payload affects range, runway performance and the fuel available to receivers, while the tanker must retain reserves for holding, diversion and landing.

The Pegasus complements rather than replaces a heavy airlifter. Vehicles or outsized loads beyond its cargo-envelope limits belong on an aircraft designed around the C-17’s strategic-airlift mission.

Is the KC-46A replacing the KC-135?

The KC-46A is replacing part of the ageing KC-135 fleet, but it is not an immediate or complete one-for-one substitute. KC-135 aircraft remain relevant because fleet transition, basing, receiver clearances, crew conversion and maintenance capacity take time.

The KC-46 programme has also had documented deficiencies involving the Remote Vision System and the boom’s axial load with some lighter receiver aircraft. Remedies and clearances can change, so real missions follow the applicable flight manuals and receiver-certification data; flight-simulator models may simplify or omit these restrictions.

Operationally, the Pegasus extends combat radius, keeps patrol aircraft on station and allows forces to deploy without as many intermediate fuel stops. For a credible simulated mission, plan the receiver and refuelling method first, then calculate the required offload, tanker reserve, holding allowance and diversion fuel rather than treating every kilogram aboard as transferable.
