To fix missing Citation Mustang gauges in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, reinstall the aircraft’s gauge files into the folder expected by its panel.cfg, preserve any CAB archives, and allow trusted gauge modules. If the screens are present but black, check battery, avionics and add-on dependencies before replacing files.
Are the Mustang gauges missing or simply black?
A physically absent instrument and an installed display with a black screen have different causes.

Where should Citation Mustang gauge files go?
Citation Mustang gauges normally belong either in FSX’s global Gauges folder or inside the aircraft’s active panel folder.
{FSX root}\Gauges\holds gauges shared between aircraft.{FSX root}\SimObjects\Airplanes\{Mustang aircraft}\panel\holds panel-local gauges.- A panel variant may use a folder such as
panel.glassinstead ofpanel.
The Steam Edition root is inside the selected Steam library, while boxed FSX normally uses its Microsoft Flight Simulator X installation folder. Do not assume an installer has found the right copy when boxed FSX and Steam Edition have both existed on the computer.
Check the relevant [fltsim.x] entry in aircraft.cfg. An empty panel= value selects the normal panel folder; panel=glass, for example, selects panel.glass.
Back up the active panel.cfg, then inspect its gauge00=, gauge01= and similar lines. In a reference such as gauge00=ContainerName!GaugeName,..., the name before the exclamation mark identifies the required gauge container. Confirm that its CAB, DLL, GAU file or XML gauge folder exists where the package expects it.
Keep CAB gauge archives intact unless the add-on’s instructions explicitly say to extract them. The mistake we see most often is an extra folder level created during extraction, leaving the real CAB or DLL one directory below the location FSX searches. How do I restore the Citation Mustang gauges safely?
- Close FSX and make backups. Copy the complete Mustang aircraft folder, its active
panel.cfgand any gauge files you intend to replace. - Test the electrical state. Start a fresh flight, switch on the battery, generators and avionics, and wait for any simulated avionics boot sequence. A saved cold-and-dark flight can make a correct installation appear broken.
- Confirm that the package is for FSX. Use the FSX build of the aircraft rather than a gauge set compiled only for another simulator. FSX and FSX: Steam Edition use 32-bit gauge modules, even on 64-bit Windows.
- Reinstall from the original complete package. Point the installer at the active FSX root. For a manual package, preserve every supplied subfolder; our explanation of aircraft package structure and installation folders covers the common nesting errors.
- Check the files against panel.cfg. Do not rename CAB or DLL files and do not replace
panel.cfgwith one from a different Mustang release. Gauge names and panel definitions must belong to the same package version. - Allow trusted modules. When FSX asks whether to run software from the add-on, approve it only when it came from the original trusted package. Declining that prompt can leave every instrument supplied by the module blank.
- Test without DX10 Preview. Disable the FSX setting labelled
Preview DirectX 10, restart the simulator and reload the aircraft. Older gauges can be present and powered yet fail to render under the preview renderer.
Gauge DLLs that still refuse to load
A DLL or GAU module can be present in the correct folder but fail because one of its own components is unavailable.
- Install the prerequisites supplied with the aircraft, including the correct x86 runtime when specified. Do not download individual system DLLs or place them manually in Windows system folders.
- Check whether Windows security or antivirus software quarantined the module. Restore it only after confirming that it came from the original trusted package.
- If a trust prompt was previously rejected, back up the active FSX configuration file and remove only the matching entry from its
[Trusted]section. FSX should ask about that module again at the next launch. - Repair SimConnect only when the aircraft documentation or an error message identifies it as a dependency. XML gauges and ordinary CAB archives do not all require a separate SimConnect repair.
When should I repair the default FSX gauges?
Repair the default gauge set only when stock instruments are also missing or the Mustang’s panel references a known default FSX gauge that no longer exists.
Back up the Gauges folder first. Steam’s file-verification function can restore stock files, while boxed FSX can use its original repair process; either method may overwrite modified default files. A utility for recovering missing or overwritten FSX gauges is another targeted option.
Default-gauge repair will not restore proprietary Citation Mustang modules. If every stock aircraft works and only the Mustang is affected, return to the aircraft’s original installer, active panel folder and required dependencies rather than replacing the whole FSX gauge library.
