Fix FSX cockpit pop-up panels that are missing, off-screen or blank. Check shortcuts, monitor positions, panel.cfg entries and gauge files.
Cockpit pop-up panels in FSX are usually hidden off-screen, omitted from the aircraft’s panel.cfg, or opening with missing gauges. Use Views > Instrument Panel instead of relying on a shortcut. If the panel is listed, recover its position; if it is absent, repair the aircraft’s panel configuration.
FSX and FSX: Steam Edition use the same basic panel system, although their installation folders differ. The fastest fix depends on whether FSX lists the missing panel at all.
How can I tell why an FSX pop-up panel is missing?
The panel’s behaviour in the Instrument Panel menu identifies the likely cause.

How do I bring an invisible pop-up panel back?
- Open it from the menu. Press Alt if the FSX menu bar is hidden, then choose Views > Instrument Panel and select the panel by name. The familiar Shift+1 through Shift+9 shortcuts can be reassigned, intercepted or mapped to a different numbered window, so the menu is the better diagnostic.
- Check both cockpit views. Switch between the virtual cockpit and 2D cockpit, especially when an add-on expects a panel clickspot in one particular view. Our explanation of FSX cockpit views and their keyboard controls covers the relevant view changes.
- Switch temporarily to windowed mode. Use Alt+Enter, reopen the panel and look behind or beside the main FSX window. An undocked panel behaves as a separate window and may be hidden behind the simulator in full-screen mode.
- Restore the previous monitor layout. If a second monitor was removed or rearranged, reconnect it temporarily, open the panel, move it onto the main display and dock it again. The same recovery process is covered in our dual-monitor FSX setup guidance.
- Test a fresh flight. Create a new Free Flight with a default aircraft instead of loading an old saved flight. Saved flights can retain panel visibility and window positions; if a new flight works, reposition the panels and save the flight again.
What if the panel is missing from the Instrument Panel menu?
A panel that is absent from the menu is either not supplied by that aircraft or not being read from panel.cfg. You cannot open a radio stack, GPS or overhead window that the aircraft developer never defined.
For an add-on that should include the panel, close FSX and make a backup of the aircraft’s panel configuration. It is normally found under SimObjects\Airplanes\<aircraft>\panel\panel.cfg in the active FSX installation.
Check these entries without changing unrelated values:
- The
[Window Titles]section should contain the panel name, such asWindow01=Radio Stack. - A matching section, such as
[Window01], must exist later in the file. - Window numbers and section names must match exactly and must not be duplicated.
- An
alias=entry must point to an aircraft and panel folder that actually exist. - Damaged
window_posorwindow_sizeentries should be restored from the original add-on files rather than replaced with guessed values.
The setting visible=0 is normally not an error: it means the panel starts closed, not that it can never be opened. After editing the file, reload the aircraft or restart FSX. If both boxed FSX and Steam Edition are installed, confirm that you changed the copy belonging to the installation you launched.
Why does the pop-up window open without instruments?
An empty, black or transparent pop-up means the window is loading but its gauges are not. This is a different fault from an off-screen panel.
Missing gauge files, incorrect gauge00= references, blocked add-on modules and older gauges that fail under DX10 Preview are common causes. Follow our checks for blank or invisible FSX instruments before altering the window position.
If files were installed manually, compare every gauge reference with the supplied package and verify that the required files are in the aircraft’s panel folder or the FSX Gauges folder. Why does the problem affect only one aircraft?
If default-aircraft pop-ups work, FSX’s panel controls are functioning and the affected add-on needs repair. Restore its original panel files or reinstall that aircraft rather than reinstalling the entire simulator.
If every aircraft is affected, test the menu rather than shortcuts, start a fresh flight and reset the display arrangement first. Only investigate gauge compatibility when a panel window actually appears but its instruments do not.
