Connect the Xbox controller before launching Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, open Options > Controls Options, select the controller, and start with its Default profile. Configure the Xbox controller step by step
- Connect the controller: On PC, use USB or pair it wirelessly before starting MSFS 2020. On Xbox, sign in with the controller you intend to use.
- Open Controls Options: From the main menu, open Options > Controls Options and select the Xbox controller from the devices shown across the top.
- Load the Default profile: The supplied profile is the safest starting point because it already pairs the two triggers for rudder control and assigns the main flight, camera and menu functions.
- Create a custom profile before editing: Use Preset Manager to duplicate the default preset, or let the simulator create a custom preset when prompted. This preserves a clean profile to fall back on.
- Show every command: Set the filter to All when looking for an unassigned control. Use Assigned to audit existing bindings, or Search by Input to discover what a button or stick already controls.
- Bind analogue controls as axes: The left stick should use Ailerons Axis for roll and Elevator Axis for pitch. Do not bind the same stick to both an axis and separate left/right or up/down commands.
- Check each assignment: Select the command, scan or choose the input, move or press the intended control, and validate it. Remove any unwanted conflict rather than accepting every duplicate warning.
- Save and test: Select Apply & Save, load a simple trainer in calm weather, and check full left/right roll, pitch direction, rudder, throttle, brakes and camera movement before attempting a normal flight.

Which Xbox controller bindings matter most?
Pitch, roll, yaw, throttle and brakes must be easy to reach without moving your hands away from the sticks.

Retain useful default shortcuts for landing gear, flaps, cockpit interaction and changing views. A mistake we see constantly is clearing the entire profile to change one button, then discovering that camera, menu and cursor controls have disappeared as well.
What Xbox controller sensitivity settings work best?
The best starting point is the Default sensitivity curve with only enough dead zone to stop unwanted movement.
- Dead zone: Increase it gradually if the aircraft rolls, pitches or changes camera view while the stick is untouched. Use the smallest value that removes the drift.
- Sensitivity: Soften the response around the centre if small stick movements produce abrupt attitude changes. Extreme curves make the aircraft feel unresponsive near the centre and overly sharp near full travel.
- Extremity and neutral settings: Leave these near their defaults unless the controller cannot reach full input or does not centre correctly.
- Reactivity: Change it only after the basic curve and dead zone are correct; it affects how quickly the simulated control follows your input.

Why is the Xbox controller not working properly?
Most Xbox controller problems in MSFS 2020 come from device detection, the wrong active profile, duplicate inputs or unsaved assignments.
- The controller is missing: Reconnect it before starting the simulator and confirm that the operating system detects it. Avoid connecting the same controller through USB and wireless at once. Follow our device-detection and controller troubleshooting checks if it still does not appear.
- The aircraft ignores the stick: Confirm that the Xbox controller and intended preset are selected. Set the filter to All and check for Ailerons Axis and Elevator Axis rather than digital directional commands.
- The aircraft drifts or twitches: Add a small dead zone, then check every other connected device for a second pitch, roll, yaw or throttle assignment. Input-remapping software can also expose a physical controller and a virtual copy at the same time.
- One input performs two actions: Use Search by Input, press the affected control, and remove the unwanted assignment. Not every conflict is harmful, but two flight commands on one stick or trigger usually are.
- Changes disappear: Make sure you edited a custom preset and selected Apply & Save before leaving Controls Options.
- The profile is beyond repair: Restore the Default preset or use our instructions for resetting damaged or duplicated MSFS bindings.
Can you fly MSFS 2020 using only an Xbox controller?
Yes. An Xbox controller is sufficient for basic aircraft, external views and normal take-offs and landings, but it has too few inputs for every cockpit command.
On PC, a keyboard and mouse make radio entry, cockpit switches and complex aircraft much easier to manage. The controller remains effective for the primary flight controls; use cockpit interaction or another input device for functions that do not need instant access.
