To create an external wing camera view in a flight simulator, select an aircraft-attached or free external camera, position it beside the fuselage until the wing fills the frame, set the zoom and viewing angle, then save it to a custom-camera slot. Choose an attached camera if the viewpoint must remain fixed to the aircraft.
The exact controls differ between Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, FSX and Prepar3D, but the underlying method is the same. The key is choosing a camera mode that renders the external aircraft and, when required, follows its movement.
Which camera mode should I use for a wing view?
Use an aircraft-attached camera for normal flying and a free or drone camera for temporary screenshots and video composition.

A mistake we see constantly is rotating an orbit camera and expecting that angle to remain fixed beside the wing. Orbit controls turn around the aircraft; translation controls move the camera laterally, vertically and longitudinally to the required position.
How do I create the external wing view?
The dependable method is to place an attached external camera near the wing, frame the view with movement and rotation controls, and test it before saving.
- Select an external attached camera. Start from an outside, ride-along or aircraft camera rather than a tower, fly-by or world-fixed view.
- Move beside the fuselage. Use camera translation controls to move aft, forward, sideways and vertically. Do not rely on zoom to change the camera's physical position.
- Aim along the wing. Rotate the camera until the wing root, engine or wingtip occupies the required part of the frame. Keep the horizon reasonably level unless you specifically want a dramatic angle.
- Adjust zoom or field of view. A moderate field of view produces a natural-looking wing. Excessively wide settings stretch the wingtip and make the fuselage appear unnaturally curved.
- Leave clearance around the model. Keep the camera slightly away from the aircraft skin so the near-clipping plane does not cut through the fuselage. Allow room for wing flex, deployed flaps, spoilers and thrust reversers.
- Test the view in flight. Bank, extend the landing gear and change the flap setting. Confirm that the camera remains attached and that moving aircraft parts do not pass through it.
- Save and reload it. Assign the angle to a custom-view or quick-look slot, reload the aircraft, and verify that the simulator restores the same position.
How does the method differ between simulators?
Each simulator uses different camera names and storage systems, so use the method intended for your platform rather than copying camera co-ordinates from another one.

How do I save a wing camera permanently?
Use the simulator's built-in custom-view or quick-look system whenever it can store an aircraft-relative external position.
Camera slots are often aircraft-specific in practice, even when the assigned keys are global. Different variants can use another model origin, wingspan or cockpit reference point, causing a copied view to appear inside the fuselage or several metres away.
FSX, Prepar3D and some add-on aircraft may require configuration-file editing for a new camera definition. Back up the original file first. Aircraft updates, reinstalls and add-on installers can overwrite edited camera entries, so retain a separate copy of any working definition.
Why does the wing or aircraft disappear?
The wing usually disappears because the selected camera mode does not render the user's aircraft, or because the viewpoint is inside the model's clipping boundary.
- Only the scenery is visible: switch from a world, tower or detached camera to an external aircraft camera.
- Parts of the fuselage vanish: move the camera farther from the aircraft and reduce extreme zoom settings.
- The inside of the model looks transparent: the external model may use one-sided surfaces that were never intended to be viewed from inside. Place the camera outside the skin or use a modelled cabin view.
- The view drifts behind the aircraft: enable the camera's follow or tracking option, or change to an attached mode.
- The view resets after loading: confirm that the preset was saved rather than merely positioned, and check for conflicting camera bindings.
Can one wing camera work with every aircraft?
No. Wing position, model origin, camera limits and clipping behaviour differ between aircraft, so each type normally needs its own saved angle.
Create separate presets for markedly different variants as well. A view made for a short-fuselage airliner may sit inside the cabin on a stretched model, while high-wing aircraft need a different height and viewing direction from low-wing types.
