Learn how to zoom the cockpit view in MSFS, X-Plane, FSX, Prepar3D and FlightGear, and fix mouse-wheel or key bindings that do nothing.
In most flight simulators, including Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, FSX, Prepar3D and FlightGear, point at the cockpit and turn the mouse wheel to zoom. If that fails, bind the camera’s Zoom In and Zoom Out commands. Zoom changes field of view; eyepoint controls move the pilot’s seat instead.
Which controls zoom the cockpit camera?
The usual cockpit zoom control is the mouse wheel, but default keyboard commands differ between simulators and may be replaced by a custom control profile.

Controller layouts vary more than keyboard defaults. On a console or PC gamepad, open the active controller profile and search for zoom; do not assume that a command assigned to the keyboard is also mapped to the controller.
How do I assign cockpit zoom controls?
Bind zoom from the simulator’s camera or view-control category while the intended keyboard, mouse, joystick or controller profile is selected.
- Enter the normal cockpit view. Leave any drone, showcase, external or instrument close-up camera before testing.
- Open the controls menu. Select the device you intend to use, then search for
zoom. - Assign both directions. Map Zoom In and Zoom Out to separate buttons, a mouse wheel or an analogue zoom axis where the simulator provides one.
- Check for duplicate inputs. Remove another camera, throttle or cockpit-interaction command from the same buttons if it activates at the same time.
- Test inside the cockpit. Confirm that the field of view changes without the pilot position moving forwards or backwards.
Buttons are best for occasional framing changes. A spare rotary control or slider is better when you need smooth zoom, but check its direction, sensitivity and dead zone before flying.
Why does the mouse wheel not zoom the cockpit?
A mouse wheel usually stops zooming because the pointer, camera mode or active control profile is capturing the input elsewhere.
- The pointer is over a cockpit knob. Move it onto an empty section of panel or windscreen so scrolling does not change a radio, lighting or autopilot control.
- The wrong camera is active. Cockpit, external and free-camera modes may have separate zoom assignments.
- The binding is missing from this profile. Simulators often maintain separate presets for each mouse, controller or aircraft profile.
- An add-on or camera utility is consuming the input. Disable its camera handling temporarily and test the simulator’s default camera.
- Head tracking keeps restoring the view. Pause the tracker while testing. Ordinary monitor zoom and head-position movement are separate controls.
- You are flying in VR. Normal 2-D zoom may not apply because headset field of view is fixed. Use the simulator’s dedicated VR zoom or focus command if one is available.
If the cause remains unclear, use the camera-reset command and test with a default control preset. Restore only the camera bindings rather than erasing every aircraft and controller assignment.
Should I zoom or move the cockpit seat?
Use zoom to change field of view and eyepoint controls to change where the virtual pilot sits.
- Move the eyepoint when the glareshield is too high, the yoke blocks the primary instruments, or your viewpoint is too far forwards or backwards.
- Zoom out when you need more peripheral cockpit visibility, accepting that instruments and the runway will appear smaller.
- Zoom in when reading a panel or judging a distant visual reference, but avoid leaving a narrow view set for taxiing or landing.
There is no universal realistic zoom value because monitor size, viewing distance and the simulator’s field-of-view calculation differ. Excessive zoom-out creates a distorted wide-angle view and makes the runway appear farther away; excessive zoom-in removes peripheral cues needed for attitude and flare judgement.
Can I save my preferred cockpit zoom?
Most modern simulators can retain a preferred framing through a custom cockpit view, saved camera or aircraft-specific view profile.
Set the eyepoint first, adjust the zoom second, then save the custom view. If it later opens at the wrong magnification, check whether that simulator saves field of view as well as camera position; some view systems store only the eyepoint, while an aircraft or camera add-on may reset zoom when the cockpit loads.
