Check the validity and schedule first
The broad start and end dates do not always mean that the condition applies continuously. A notice may add a schedule such as DLY followed by particular UTC hours, so test both the date range and the daily active period against the flight time.
PERM describes a permanent change awaiting incorporation into published information. When EST follows an end time, it means the end time is estimated; it does not mean Eastern Standard Time. Also watch for EXC, because the words following it define who or what is exempt.
Common contractions include CLSD for closed, U/S for unserviceable, WIP for work in progress, BTN for between and DLY for daily. Read the full sentence before acting: a taxiway segment closed between two intersections is different from the entire taxiway being closed.
Apply each notice to the chart and operation
A chart provides the published baseline, while a NOTAM provides a temporary or newly permanent exception. Use the effective KLAX airport diagram and procedure charts rather than trying to interpret identifiers from memory.
- Runways and taxiways: Mark closed sections, displaced thresholds, unavailable intersections and lighting failures on the airport diagram. Work out the resulting taxi route and runway-crossing points before movement.
- Approach equipment: Identify exactly what is unavailable—such as the localiser, glideslope, DME or approach lights. A component outage does not automatically cancel every use of an approach, but it can change eligibility or minima; read the affected approach chart and its equipment notes.

The FAA Chart Supplement’s baseline airport details and remarks are useful for context, but they do not replace NOTAMs. If the published chart and an active NOTAM conflict, apply the valid NOTAM and clarify any ambiguous wording through Flight Service or ATC.
Why do two KLAX NOTAM lists disagree?
Two lists usually disagree because they use different time windows, category filters, retrieval times or data refresh intervals.
- One search may show notices issued now, while another shows only those active at the selected flight time.
- An airport-only result can omit FDC, airspace, route or navigation-aid notices delivered in a full briefing.
- A translated display may group or shorten text that remains separate in the raw FAA record.
- One list may retain a notice that has been cancelled or replaced because its cached data has not refreshed.
- UTC conversion errors can move an overnight closure onto a different local calendar day.
Resolve the difference by repeating the official query with identical UTC times and filters, checking each notice’s validity and confirming that cancellations have been applied. Do not infer that an ATC clearance or dispatch from simulator ATC cancels a real NOTAM restriction.
What changes when using KLAX NOTAMs in a flight simulator?
Real KLAX NOTAMs can add useful operational realism, but the simulator’s scenery, AI traffic and ATC may not reproduce the reported condition.
Set the simulated date and UTC time within the NOTAM’s active period, then manually avoid closed runways or taxiways if the simulator has not blocked them. Live weather alone does not prove that live NOTAM closures have been applied.
Procedure names and taxiway layouts may also differ when scenery or navigation data is from another publication cycle. Use charts matching the intended simulation period, recognise database mismatches, and treat simulator information as recreational rather than as an operational briefing for a real flight.
