Is there a cockpit switch to turn off the overspeed warning?

No standard Boeing cockpit control is intended to suppress an active VMO/MMO warning. On a Boeing 737 simulation, pressing Master Caution does not cancel the overspeed clacker, and any warning-test switch is for testing the system rather than muting it.

Realistic add-ons generally reproduce this behaviour. Simpler aircraft may use the simulator's generic overspeed sound system, while complex add-ons often generate the warning through their own avionics code. That difference determines whether a simulator audio setting can affect it.

How do you stop the Boeing overspeed clacker?

The correct way to stop the clacker is to bring the aircraft below the displayed maximum speed. Reduce thrust, stop any accelerating descent and use speedbrake only within the aircraft's limitations; avoid extending flaps or landing gear above their permitted speeds.

If the autopilot or autothrottle is driving the acceleration, correct the selected speed or vertical mode rather than fighting the automation. Disconnect the relevant system if necessary and fly the aeroplane smoothly. Why does the warning keep sounding below the speed limit?

  1. Read indicated airspeed and Mach. Groundspeed and the autopilot's selected-speed window do not determine a VMO/MMO warning.
  2. Check the moving limit marker. At higher altitude, the Mach limit can become restrictive even when the indicated airspeed looks reasonable. Compare the aircraft with the speed tape's maximum-speed cue rather than relying on one memorised figure.
  3. Stabilise clearly below both limits. A brief reduction to the exact boundary may not clear modelled hysteresis or a rapidly fluctuating air-data value.
  4. Check for failures and modified sounds. An unintended air-data failure, panel modification or looping replacement sound can create a false or stuck alert. Test the unmodified aircraft with failures reset before blaming the warning logic.
  5. Reload only after ruling out a real overspeed. If the aircraft is stable below both limits and the sound continues, reload its panel state or restart the flight. This diagnoses a simulator fault; it is not an overspeed-recovery technique.

Disabling crash or aircraft-damage options does not necessarily disable warnings, especially when an add-on models them independently. Boeing limits exist because exceeding VMO or MMO carries genuine structural and handling risks, even if the simulator does not model every consequence.

Can you mute or edit the warning sound?
