Before downloading, check that your computer meets the hardware, storage and graphics requirements for FlightGear. Graphics support matters particularly: a PC can meet the basic processor and memory requirements yet still fail at launch because of an unsuitable GPU or outdated driver.
How do I install FlightGear step by step?
- Finish the download: wait until the browser reports that the file is complete. A partial installer may open and then fail with a corrupt-package or extraction error.
- Check the package type: if the download is an executable installer, open it directly. If it is a compressed archive, use Windows’ Extract All command first and keep every extracted file together; do not run the program from inside the archive.
- Approve the Windows prompt: allow the trusted installer to make changes when User Account Control asks. If Windows security produces a warning, confirm that the file came from the download page above. Do not disable antivirus protection to force an unidentified copy to run.

What should I configure on the first launch?
For the first run, leave most rendering and simulation options at their defaults and test a simple daytime flight. This establishes that the base installation works before demanding graphics settings, custom aircraft or third-party scenery complicate fault-finding.
The base package may provide only limited local scenery. Why won't FlightGear install or start?

Can I install a new FlightGear release over an old one?
A separate installation is safer than overwriting an older FlightGear folder containing modified files. Back up custom aircraft, scenery and configuration data, then let the new installer use its suggested destination or another clean folder.
Reinstalling the program does not necessarily remove per-user preferences, which is why an old configuration can survive and reproduce the same launch problem. Rename settings instead of deleting them outright; that makes the change reversible and protects any files you later discover you still need.
