What should I check before downloading FlightGear for Windows?
Confirm that the package supports your Windows edition and processor architecture, and leave room for both the simulator and its expanding scenery cache. Scenery can eventually consume much more storage than the initial installation, so the drive with the most free space is often the better place for that cache.
Graphics compatibility deserves particular attention. FlightGear relies on OpenGL and needs a working hardware graphics driver; a PC showing Microsoft Basic Display Adapter may have adequate hardware but the wrong driver installed. Processor speed and memory alone do not establish that FlightGear will render correctly.
How do I install FlightGear step by step?
A clean installation using the suggested components is the least troublesome way to install FlightGear on PC.
- Let the download finish: wait until the browser reports that the file is complete. A partial installer may still appear in the Downloads folder but fail with an extraction, archive or corrupt-package error.
- Check the file type: open an installer package directly. If you deliberately downloaded a compressed package, use Windows' extraction command first and keep the full extracted directory structure intact.
- Verify any security warning: make sure the package came from the download page above and that its details match what you intended to download. A Windows warning is a reason to verify the file, not a reason to disable antivirus protection.
- Close an older FlightGear copy: exit the simulator and launcher before installing. Back up custom aircraft, scenery and configuration files if you are replacing or upgrading an existing installation.
- Run the installer: allow setup to request permission through User Account Control when required, then review and accept the software licence.
- Choose the installation folder: keep the suggested local folder for a first installation. Do not install into an old modified FlightGear data directory, a temporary download folder or a scenery cache.
- Keep the default components: the normal component selection is suitable for a first flight. Optional developer files or unfamiliar extras are not needed merely to run the simulator.

What should I configure when FlightGear starts for the first time?
Start with an included aircraft, an airport covered by available scenery and conservative graphics settings. A simple daytime flight confirms that the base installation works before custom aircraft, complex weather or high rendering settings make fault-finding harder.

Will FlightGear download scenery automatically?
FlightGear can run without internet access where the necessary aircraft and scenery are already stored locally, but automatic scenery retrieval needs a connection. TerraSync downloads terrain for the area being flown and retains it in a cache for later use.
Place that cache in a writable folder with ample free space, not inside a protected program directory. Missing terrain usually means that scenery is unavailable, still downloading or being written to the wrong location; reinstalling FlightGear rarely fixes it.
Do I need Steam to download FlightGear?
No. The standalone FlightGear Windows download runs independently and does not need Steam or a store account.
If you already use a Steam-managed copy, let the Steam client install, update and remove that copy. Do not overwrite its program or data directories with files from a standalone installation. The two distribution methods can package versions differently, and mixing them makes failed updates and missing-data errors more likely.
Why won't FlightGear install or start on Windows?
Most FlightGear installation failures come from an incomplete download, a mismatched package, separated data files, stale user settings or an unsuitable graphics driver.

Can I install a new FlightGear release over an old one?
Yes, but installing a new release into a clean folder is safer than overwriting an old directory containing modified files. Back up custom add-ons, record any external scenery paths and let the new installer use its suggested destination.
Program files and personal settings are separate. Reinstalling or upgrading FlightGear may leave the settings under %APPDATA%\flightgear.org untouched, allowing an old configuration problem to reappear in the new installation. Rename the settings folder rather than deleting it so that the change remains reversible.
Separate FlightGear releases may coexist, but their shortcuts should be clearly identified and they should not share modified program-data folders. Test the new version in its default state before reconnecting custom aircraft or add-ons, since files built for an older release are not guaranteed to remain compatible.
